Where I go to medical school there's a well known student that's at least in his 70s, you can always find him in the library. He's decided to study medicine after his wife passed away, that's the biggest example that it's never too late.
@nicolasvonderputten9344

@@willhoffert3744 yes in that case you're right, but I study medicine in Uruguay and there are clearly some differences, college education is free to begin with, there isn't a limited amount of spots and you enter directly after high school, so anyone has the chance to begin at least. What makes it competitive is the pace and difficulty. It's a total of 8 years to get your degree. When I began there was a total of almost 2000 students, only 800 pass aprox. to second year because of the filters and exams. The whole first year we only study Celular and Molecular biology, which tends to frighten most of the students, we enter the clinical part in the 4th year and then we begin our rotations. So give the old man some credit! lol I imagine the difficulties in the US and it should change soon in my opinion, with how much doctors are needed, without sacrificing the quality of education of course.

True story. My mother was a RN when I was growing up. She went to Med school when I went to college. I graduated college the same year she graduated Med school. Then I went to Med school in the same city where she did her residency. She did a 4 year residency in ob/gyn. When I was a fourth year Med student, I rotated on her service as she was then a senior/chief resident. I was young and care free! She went to Med school, had her 6th! Child while in Med school, and raised her 5 other kids while going to Med school and doing her residency. I still look back….impressed.

I'm 31 and a med school applicant in Japan. I know things are different between us but I've inspired by this video and all these positive comments. In Japan most people would stop you or discourage you when you tell them you want to be a doctor even from your mid 20's. This is very shame but if you're woman, things can be more hard. But still I want to be a doctor. I want to say 'No one can stop me' all time but sometimes I really need help for encouraging myself. I'm glad I found this video, thank you so much. I'm following my dream too.

I'm from Pakistan and things are truly hard here for woman. I'm 32 and I wasted my twenties because of societal pressure to get marry. I didn't get married in my twenties because I was unsuitable and wasn't as eye pleasing to be a 'perfect' bride. I just wanted my time and now I think it's time I should do something for myself. But my ordeal is harder since I grew up in third world country and wasn't given much opportunities. I'm willing though to study medicine.

I started medical at age 40; I went to a Carribean medical school and failed STEP 1 thrice. After this, the school asked me to start all over again, but now I can't go back to the Caribbean. Besides, their medical education is nowhere near the standards of US medical schools. And since I failed the STEP 1 exam, I can't apply to US medical schools because of my failure, as my chances are very slim. But In my heart, I know my fate is to become a doctor; this is embedded in my soul. So now I'm studying to apply for the physician assistant school. After that, I will apply for medical school again because being a PA will improve my chances of rejoining medical school. So, I am following this path. I am old. I am turning 60 this year, but my age cannot stop me from following my dream.

Some people don't understand that a 40 years old student has already made a carrier in an other field or he/she worked hard for the last ten/twenty years and came to university just to follow his dream! I’m 35 and have been working as a customer care representative for a healthcare company for 4 years. I often talk to people over the phone who are ordering medications at mail order or needing some kind of override or prior approval for medications at retail pharmacies also. These people open up to me about their lives and it really touches my heart and soul. Working in my position has really opened my eyes that people need someone with true empathy and the heart to really be a doctor, that’s my inspiration for considering medical school. I also want to be able to help my family and myself as we are starting to see health conditions spring forth in our own lives. I realize so much now, that if you’re in it solely for the money, you have let down humanity whatever it is you are doing. We’re meant to take care of one another and show God’s love through our service. This is how I want to serve humanity before I expire. God willing.🙏🏽✨❤️

My cousins father was an electrical engineer in Moldova. He only became that because the school was next to his house and his father was an electrician so it was all he knew. But he would read medical encyclopedias day in and day out. He was like an unofficial family doctor. When he moved to the US at 48, he said “I’m in America! I will follow my dreams!”. went on and now 68 and I think it took him like 8 years to get his degree but now he is a very happy family medicine/community clinic doctor and his daughter is finishing med school this year and his son is already a pharmacist:).

Thank you Dr. Webb! I really needed this video. I started college late and decided to major in nursing rather than the traditional bio or chem type of pre-med major in case med school never worked out for me. Nursing gives me the stability I sought from a college education and while I absolutely love it a part of me still nags at me to go to med school. I’ll be in my early to mid thirties by the time I can start applying. I’ve certainly had my doubts about my age but it’s videos like these and inspiring med school journeys such as your own Dr. Webb that motivate me to not give up on my goal.

Treatment is going well and I'm pretty sure I can get my medical back to go back to my airline pilot job but if for some reason I can't the whole process of being treated for cancer has made me super interested in possibly going to med school or becoming a PA. Seriously, thank you for this. I just shadowed a internal medicine PA at the hospital. I met a ton of different doctors. Being a P.A. seems cool, but being a doctor, specifically a gastroenterologist, seems like a dream to me. It’s something that gives me chills when I think about pursuing it and becoming it. I’m 21 now and will probably finish my bachelors within the next 2 years. I had a doc tell me go to the PA route instead because with how long it’d take to me to get accepted to medical school, I wouldn’t start practicing until I’m 35 years old. But this video encourages me to go after that dream and become that doctor. To study my ass off and challenge myself. I wasn’t sure if I missed the point in my life to try to go to medical school, but I think I’m just fine. I’m not going to settle!

I would seriously consider PA or NP at age 40. That is not because they could not go to medical school and be successful. However, the way things are going, NPs and PAs are only increasing in autonomy and scope of practice. The cost of medical school is growing exponentially. I would say the only exception is if you want to be in a surgical specialty. The opportunity cost is just so much greater.
@lydian5762
@lydian5762 4 года назад
Here is the problem with your suggestion, yes NP and PAs responsabilities are growing exponentially but in certain places their salaries are capped. Can you imagine reaching the cap after 5-8 yrs working knowing you're doing more and more but can no longuer have a raise yet work as much as a Dr? I say go for med school if that is what they want and secure that bag while you're at it those student loans will not pay themselves. There is also more respects for Drs than nurses. There is an aweful lot of abuse from all levels in Nursing school it is terrible.
