Jill, you have come a long way since buying your new land. Per Jess, I started watching you at the old place, and saw that often you would check your garden once a week? I see you growing as a gardener and food producer, congrats! I don't know about the book you are putting out, I think to little too soon, since you have only been actually doing productive gardening for a year? I know you have grown before, but having watched, not sure it's book worthy. Prove me wrong please! I love seeing you grow!

Question: you talked about amending your soil and mentioned the poor soil you have faced on your new farm. The farm formerly belonged to Jess, and she also talks often about the life of soil being the most important thing in order for a farm to be successful. My question is: what did you find was wrong with the soil? I love your high tunnel set up with the misters

So this is my first year gardening in this home. I'm so discouraged. I was on a much smaller piece of land and able to grow a lot. This year I'm on a larger property and I've way underestimated the water needs. So everything was stunted. But I'm in CA and I'm starting more seeds and praying for a large fall crop. It's also the first year I'm gardening in the fall.

What do you cook or make with all of your squash? Growing up, my family was Hungarian and didn’t use squash in anything and I have such trouble using and enjoying squash. I toss zucchini and yellow squash in olive oil, salt, peppers, other seasonings, occasionally and roast in the oven, but that’s about all. How do you use all of your squashes?

In case no one else answers, I personally fill a big bucket about 2/3rd with water, add a glug of bleach, and then put in my rinsed pots and let them soak for a bit. Pull out and allow to dry before using (drying deactivates the bleach). You can do whole sleeves of pots at a time, I just make sure that that the water can get in and between all the pot walls so nothing gets missed 🙂

Also are you starting your seeds in the high tunnel? Will it be too hot?
@Junkinsally
@Junkinsally 2 года назад
She’s starting them in her seed starting tunnel. The sides roll up for ventilation and I believe she has electric venting fans as well. Their “high tunnel” is beside the seed starting tunnel and she will be transplanting a lot of the starts into there when ready.

I'm in Springfield, Missouri so 6b, and I know I have to plant later than you in the spring and before you in the fall, so I am dropping seeds! Oh, and you pronounce kohlrabi correctly. I pronounce it the same, so I thought maybe I should look up the pronunciation, and you're saying it right. 😁

I have had trouble starting seeds inside, for fall. They germinate but get super leggy. I'm in zone 7b and it is still really hot, can I start seeds outside?
@kimogorman5613
@kimogorman5613 2 года назад
I have started my kale inside under grow lights because it is still too hot here and the seedlings will fry outside. Are you able to use grow lights? Grow lights will cut down on the legginess.

@@angelawilliams8401 hi I do understand about cost for fancy grow lights- can't do that either. I started with a single Sunblaster bulb screwed in to a swivel neck lamp in my living room with a few lettuce seeds. The bulb was $11. Don't know if that is an option for you but the Sunblasters are powerful and you can get started with little money.

You can, its just harder to keep the soil moist. You don't need "grow lights" for seed starting though! Regular florescent bulbs work fine. I use $20 florescent-style LED lights from Walmart. You want to hang them on chains and keep them like 2" above your dirt/top leaves. :)

Are the trays in your shop, too, or from Bootstrap? I like the colorful ones, but the deeper black one is cool...does it have holders for the pots?

Walmart in Idaho and Oregon sent all their seeds and most gardening things back somewhere over a month ago. Also Homedepot doesn’t have any seeds or vegetable plants either. I wanted to start some stuff to have a Fall garden. I am devastated that my options have disappeared. 🥺🥺🥺
@kimogorman5613
@kimogorman5613 2 года назад
Charmaine I found that here as well last year even at the garden centres. The seeds are wisked away and in comes Hallowe'en. The box stores don't care about fall gardeners unless you are buying mum plants. There are still online seed companies who ship this time of year and some even have sales if that is an option for you.

Check at your local feed stores.. and even some hardware stores.
@rebeccab1527
@rebeccab1527 2 года назад
Unfortunately true. I usually plan ahead and buy everything in spring, then just store it (somewhere that doesn't get too hot!). You can still order online -- johnnys seed, hoss, territorial, Osborne, and other big companies have most seed year-round.
