Hi Flower Friends! It's Nicole from Flower Hill Farm- today I am starting my ranunculus. I'm teaming up with two of my local flower farmers who have experience growing these beauties! Tabitha from Houle Flower Farm and Erin from Little Ann's Flowers.
I am giving away a Garden Marker!!! Like and comment on this video! The winner will be announced Wednesday!
The method I am using with the fish tank pump is to simulate leaving the water running on the corms. You can also use an aerator, which is explained by Bare Mountain Farm. They have a great video about why oxygen benefits the corms in the soaking process.

If you live in a colder zone like we do- you could start them anytime over the next six weeks. We are specifically starting them now for a Mother's Day crop. My last frost date is around May 15. Generally, you start them 12 weeks before your last frost if you don't have season extenders like a low tunnel or a hoop house.

love the idea for aeration, you should use a aquarium air pump, airline tubing safety valve with an air stone can put the stone down with the bulbs much better for aeration that hang on filter :)

I bought some ranunculus in fall of 2019, and planted them straight away in my raised garden beds. I was completely unaware that they required any extra prep like soaking, or that they should be planted in the spring. Luckily I'm in zone 8, and they came up without any trouble come spring 2020. I think they bloomed in March. They were absolutely beautiful, and some had a wonderful scent. I never dug up the corms last year, I just left them where they were, and they've been putting out new leaves for at least a month now. I hope they flower this year too!

Good video, nice to see some of your flower friends input too. I started ranunculus in autumn, some are in the hoop house and some outside, here in UK we’ve had frost down to -6c and the ranunculus are looking fabulous. The anemone on the other hand are not so good, they had rotted off and turned to sticky slimy mush in the sprouting process. Not sure what happened there, perhaps over watered? One word of caution to all flower friends out there though, mice love ranunculus corms! They will dig them up and eat the lot, once sprouted they should leave them alone. Last year a mouse had a feast , and ate all the ranunculus out of the ground all they left was the hole the dug over each corm. Lesson learned and I pre sprout the corms in a mouse free zone before planting out. Looking forward to seeing yours bloom,

Growing my first ranunculus this year. I’m in California zone 9b. I soaked but did not aerate my corms. I put most of them straight into containers outside. I already have a lot of green growth so hope I can get blooms before the heat hits. The few corms I planted directly into my garden beds were promptly scarfed up by a nocturnal animal, either rat or skunk maybe. Everything I put in the ground is subject to predation from gophers and their other fiendish accomplices. Thank you for your videos. I learn so much and am so inspired to try new things because of you!

I loved this video bcuz I've never grown ranunculus before (too much shade here at my house) So it was all good info! Now I just need to find out if we can leave them in the ground all year down here in the South... (Cuz THAT would be a bonus!!) I watched this again for 2022. I wanted to do ranunculus last year but wasn't able to obtain corms in time. Glad I watched again before just potting up 60 corms! I knew they liked cooler temps to grow but had not realized the hardiness. The hardiness means that I'll be able to move them out to my greenhouse earlier than I thought so I can have more room in my hobby room for other seeds. Zone 6b, Juneau, Alaska.

Thanks for all your informative videos! It’s my second year as a flower farmer. I did great last year but still have so much to learn! I’m excited to try so many new things this year! You’re making my learning so enjoyable. Thank you. And thank you for not charging an arm and a leg for your teaching.

Thanks, Andrea. I will never consider myself an expert and don't really feel comfortable telling people the RIGHT way to do something. I try and do my best showing people how I do something.....it's not always the best way as I am constantly learning! I do enjoy sharing though and I am glad you think it's helpful!

And your humble to boot! Love it! 💕 I read once that to be an expert you ju at have to know more than someone else. So you are certainly an expert in my opinion. Happy farming!

I'm zone 4A Wisconsin and was so excited when I found your channel! I spent my childhood in Utica and often visited Boonville with grandparents who lived in Remsen. Watching your channel is both nostalgia for my upstate childhood and my gardening now in real time! Would love to hear more about what goes inside your deer fence and what survives outside.

Great video! I grew ranunculus' for the 1st time last year, got them on a mid-summer sale, so they really didn't have enough time to grow and flower. Got a few blooms though. This year I went a little overboard on the number I purchased. Can't wait to get them started! Thanks for the instruction.

Greetings, from New Mexico!!! If you are unable to find the bags to soak the corms in, take a trip to your local hardware store, paint dept. And ask for paint filters there are usually 2 suzez. Put the Corms in the filter, tie off the opening with a rubber band then place in the water to soak. I like the idea of the fish filter to add oxygen to the soaking corms. I have used the filters, inverted, with little hoops inside, and cover small tender plants to protect them from pests. I hate grasshoppers! I've made large covers, Cloches?, out of Tulle, from the craft store. Thankyou for the Corms tutorial, awesome!!!

Oooh, I’ve been thinking about buying one of those Garden Markers. I’ve been using a regular Sharpie, but noticed last summer that it really fades in the sunlight, so I went to Plan B with making markers with my Label Maker, which doesn’t fade, but it can be time consuming to make them. The only thing is, I live in Canada 🇨🇦, so maybe shipping might be an issue if I happen to be the winner? I thought you might like to know that your RU-vid channel is one of my top 3 favourites. (Roots & Refuge is another top 3 fave.) I never miss an episode...or if I do discover a video I haven’t seen yet, I make sure to fix that ASAP.😉😂 P.S. I wanted to grow Ranuncs, but last fall they were all sold out wherever I looked, so I settled for Anemones and some other specialty bulbs/ corms that I wanted to try as well, but I will definitely get some Ranunculus in the future. Must grow these beauties. I had wondered if you could save the corms to use year after year, so thanks for answering that for me! I’ll try that with my Anemones because they are grown in similar ways to Ranuncs and also... I have nothing to lose if it doesn’t work and a whole crop of future flowers to gain if it does work!💐 Thanks for the link on oxygenating the corms while soaking.

Just a comment on dahlias, I watched a video from Coast to Coast Home and Garden and this gal visited Swan Island Dahlias and I was amazed how they berm up the dahlias A LOT, maybe a foot (like how you would do potatoes) and they didn’t have to stake them, it was amazing. In another video from Swan Island they were cutting the dahlias back with some sort of cutter pulled by a tractor just as they were starting to bloom..... they cut the whole plant 🥺, can’t remember how short, which then makes them sturdier/bushier. If you’re planting in rows this might be a good thing to try????

Just found you here, not sure how I got here exactly (rabbit holed from market flower farming search), Love your videos! inspiring. Primarily a succulent farm but also grow lots of Sunflowers, Zinnias, and Cosmos, and Dahlias for my own enjoyment. but I harvest the seed and have several large totes of seed from each year. So I'm thinking I should start selling flowers too. SO I'm venturing into the market flowers! Thank you for all the info! Succulent Adventure Micro Farm Valley Springs Ca. Zone 9b
