i have a 22 foot aluminum steel boat with the same engine. right now i need to replace the head gasket. this is one of the best and easiest to maintain boat engines you can find. very economical. as long as the copper ring seal isn't broken, the engine runs, or water gets into the system. I think I'll put the engine back together tomorrow and then we'll see. The good thing is the many different ways to start the engine. Either by hand or by electric startengine and a glow stick or a cigarette is enough to preheat. I will probably do a complete overhaul next year.
The 8hp is slightly harder to start by hand than the 10hp as the 8 hp has a higher compression. Nevertheless both engines are tough, and reliable. The 8hp I had was fitted with the dynastart, that is a combination of starter motor via belt transmission and dynamo to charge the battery all in one unit . The external charging voltage regulator could be temperamental at times. The 10hp I currently own has a Bosch starter motor and a separate alternator ,just as this video shows. With a good battery the starter motor will start the engine without decompressing.
True about the batteries. I need to reassess the setup for the batteries. Currently they’re being charged with just enough to ensure that the bilge pump will work when it rains. I need to increase the charger
I think that this engine is pretty bulletproof... apart from the water problems i continue to have. Check out my video on being towed back to my mooring!😕
All you need is to add six shots of oil from an oil can either into the cup on valve cover, or take off the staring cigarette plug and squirt oil in there. It will start with six revolutions of the handle. Decompression lever must be open and throttle in full. Hope that helps
