Wow, you Jo and the girls, have come such a long way, since i first found you building a pizza oven. Like many others I am so looking forward to this next stage in your adventure.

I long for the day when I can get another pizza oven build done! It's on the list but quite far down. 😂

Just as a matter of interest roughly how long does it take to demolish a bay and clear the rubble? Cheers regards Jim.

About twice as long as I think it will! 😂 I’ve had a week on it so far and not quite finished yet. Almost.

Another challenge begins! I remain in awe of the number of things you guys have accomplished. Came for the old house, stayed for the camper build and enjoyed every minute. Looking forward to the next chapter. Huge respect 😎👍

The Kerbs you have are standard road Kerbs called , half battered section, and are not reinforced and will crush up nicely. Says a man who spent forty years selling type one, Kerbs, paving and crushed concrete. Good luck Tim,great to see it all starting after all this time.

Yeah they broke up great, thankfully no steel at all so far. Pretty sure ive left some slab chunks too large for the crusher though. I'll see what the guy I'm using says but I believe it's a much bigger machine than the hire type.

Brilliant, Tim. I’ve done a similar job myself a couple of decades ago. I’m sure you’re right about taking it all out and starting afresh, particularly in view of the service trenches you can put in at this stage. BTW I recognise the extreme irritation of blocks falling BEHIND the blade when you’re loading ! Keep it up. I hope you feel the power of everyone’s support.😅 I thought the whiteboard vid was very effective, and a great caveat for anyone taking on a project of this nature. Mine has been a wrestling match with the planning/ environment dept. with a listed building. I can fully empathise with your years of frustration. 18:34

Just realised what’s happening with the audio, your using a directional microphone so each time you point the camera at something you loose all the top end, get a switchable mic that does variable pickup pattens, an omni to pick up all around when your on walk about, then a narrow cardiod when filming looking straight at you, weirdly I think I mentioned this over a year ago..Just trying to help etc etc exciting to see you start the build, been waiting for this, we are now in a position looking for a self build plot of our own…:)

😂😂😂 my immaturity came out when you sped up the hammering of the wall. Sounded like some clapping cheeks 😂
@AaronC684
@AaronC684 7 месяцев назад
Wouldn't it have been easier and quicker to have used a Stihl saw down the brick where the beams and rails are to free them and just pull / push the wall over.
@pronational02
@pronational02 7 месяцев назад
100% pull it all out. In the end it's less planning and easier and better work. The machinery you already have makes it an easer decision I am sure. Congrats on being able to truly break ground.

The kerbs won’t be reinforced they look to be standard precast half-battered kerbs.

I have to agree that breaking out all of the slab is the way to go. Not only for all the reasons you gave but also any supporting walls will have to sit on proper foundations - you would have to break the slab out to put these in anyway as you wouldn't simply be able build off a slab of unknown thickness. Starting from scratch means it's level, damp-proofed etc, etc.
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 7 месяцев назад
Yeah it would have been a right patchwork if we had retained. Nothing will be wasted though so we will make good use of the crushed stuff.

Good to see you are finally making a start.Have you fixed the hand brake on the dumper yet? If not I would strongly suggest you do ASAP as the thought of it rolling away even a little with other people ,especially children, about is just too horrific to contemplate.

Howz yer arms/shoulders? That is brutal. Got to be a better way to knock the walls down. Surely yer pecker (your words not mine) would make an easier option. Anyways nothing for it but to carry on. Best of luck. Thanks for the update. 🤣

Ah they’re hollow blocks so not too bad, probably made it look harder than it was. Most of it was spent sat in the digger so not too tiring! 😂

Why Don't you get a couple of 2 or 3 foot diameter pipes, lay them in your creek crossing and cover them with some of the rubble from your excavation efforts Instant creek dry crossing!

Definitely break out the old concrete slab, it may take a day or two to remove it but you will have loads of crushed concrete fill you can add back in and you will have total access to the ground below for services and so on for the new build! 🙂

Almost gone but more than a day or two! 😂 6-8 inch slab over 500m2 with a mini digger pecker. Won't be short of crushed concrete though. 👍

You got lucky that none of the cavities were poured solid, and that there was no steel in that wall. I remember the garage on the old old house or was that the same one as the one you built the timberframe shed/shop on? anyways, love seeing this new project and can't wait for the finishing on this build.
@protangotec2884
@protangotec2884 7 месяцев назад
Tim, remember you need shear resistance to the barn. I see it in the roof but you are removing the resistance of the internal columns to flexural buckling. Wind can be a big problem exacerbated by large openings.

The Big barn build 👍 Think the slab needs coming up, contaminants plus easier to get service’s drainage ect installed when it’s gone and a uniform base and thickness of new foundations when you pour the new one , is the existing slab reinforced I wonder .. and what are the steel upright foundations like looks like you enjoyed swinging thors hammer today 👊
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 7 месяцев назад
Thankfully no reinforcement so far and nice big footings that impressed the SE so all good, even though its been a fair old job to break it all out.
@joeappleton9213
@joeappleton9213 7 месяцев назад
@@TheRestorationCouple good news on the footings, the SE price you quoted last vid seems a bit on the high side .. detailed drawings about right imo we are still in the considering stage of our build as you know how Many options there are to build with , prob go with insulated steel panels exterior clad to encase the portal frame and stud work inside the depth of steels with rock wool insulation not taking our slab out it’s level and very very reinforced as it was a spud store 75x40 5 bays But converting 2 and the other 3 for another time Farmers prices on out build as you will understand your barn build looks a big un !
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 7 месяцев назад
@@joeappleton9213 yeah similar approach here. SE quote is revised now he’s seen it’s not going to need as much reinforcement and few bits we didn’t need so more in line with same cost as drawings. Still not 100% decided on wall insulation material yet but will be 100mm of something outside of steels before brick. 👍

I always feel quite sad when I knock,down a wall that I know somebody has previously built and stood back, looked at it and said, "job done, that should last for generations to come". I bet you feel a massive sense of achievement now you’re starting 👏. BTW - Tom Lamb’s RU-vid channel has a great video this week on how to mix large amounts of concrete on a farm - it’s approx 15mins and well worth a watch.
@TheRestorationCouple

In the same, especially the old stone and joinery. Saw the Tom Lamb video, interesting idea. I think we might end up just keeping it simple and having a convoy of trucks drop it in. Thankfully access is on our side too. 👍
