6 months ago we moved onto our 6 acres of abandoned land here in Ireland. Starting our off grid homestead has not been easy. Join us as we show you everything we've built so far as we turn this abandoned land into the homestead of our self-sufficiency dreams. And we'll share with you some of the emotional highs and lows of our journey so far.
We still have a TON to do, but through the mistakes, challenges and hardships we're learning and growing as we go.

There was a channel called Mossy Bottom who struggled with the Irish weather, soil and local microclimate. He came up with some ingenious ways of working the land in order to make his small holding function efficiently. You might get some good ideas from his old videos hete on YT. Good luck m'dears. Xx🎉

I dont get one thing, l know you film only a minute part of the work you do but my question is; why is it always your sweet husband doing the heavy work?. I hope it is not the reality....... you both have a beautiful smile and are very watchable, but for the moment it is very patchy, and it is a pity because this is the most interesting part. But l sub the same hoping there will be more than a told story and more action from both of you ❤❤❤

@@raffaellavitiello1762 If this was my hubby and I, he would be doing the heavy lifting, as I have a back injury and could not lift that weight, never mind up that steep hill. Perhaps he doesn't want her to get hurt? She also may be working on her own project that they will talk about in another video. Don't forget, this is just a catch-up video on what they've been up to over several months, there is only so much you can fit in. They also talked about their child needing to be driven to school which didn't seem close. Let's say it's an hour round trip. That's 2 hours just driving. Then while you're there, might as well buy groceries and do laundry, run errands etc. This encapsulated video of several months show a fraction of their lives...Hope that helps💕💕

We have some and use it in the chicken coop to control mites. It is such a wet climate here in IRL, it generally doesn't last long enough around the plants to make it worth while, it just gets washed away. When it does remain, it is effective for sure.

Go on RU-vid about your slugs, 2 strips of copper wire not touching around either the inside or out side under a wee wood overhang to prevent water linking the wires, with a 9 volt battery attacked , the battery can be pot in a plastic sandwich container. When the slug crosses the wires…. Zap! I have mine on my allotment raised boxes, lasts all summer. If you have slug eggs in the dirt already an old can filled with beer will attract all the slugs, empty frequency… don’t drink said beer! When your funds can allow it an old Quad bike would be a great help for all the lugging, get some safety pointers from the locals who have them. Lovely spot.

In time, you might want a summer shack (with a wide porch) on the top of Hilary. It would be lovely and make early morning puttering more fun; popping out of bed and wandering the garden barefoot, gazing at your views. (Then your land would be an estate! with a summerish home and a winterish home.) 😊 Maybe leveling the field closer to the house will become more possible in time. Oh, it was the lack of light wasn't it. Maybe over time you can find more shade loving crops and/or light magnifiers.

My advice is to use local knowledge and your nice neighbour to get personal recommendations for your electrician, builder, plumber aso. This country runs on who you know, as much as what you know. I wish you the best of luck, and congrats on getting the grant! From what I've heard many councils will give you a little leaway if you're a few weeks over the 13 month mark they will be ok if you tell them, but check this out anyway. something I learned the hard way since none of the books I read on about keeping chickens . chickens attract predators and rodents like rats arrgh one good hint is get a metal barrel with a lid and make sure you hide the chicken food everynight in that metal barrell ( plastic will not work because rats will eat their way through plastic... also bungee cord that lid securely on some animals can get the lid off if teh lid is not secure. HINt 2 for predators like hawks if you let the chickens free range ( they love to free range I usually only let them free range If I am going to be out and about with them now ) ... alos make some crow decoys to stick in the ground ... you can buy them or make them out of black plastic bags and wire hangers lots of tutorials on youtube or paint some pink flamingos black ( I bought some at the dollars store for a 1.25) you need at least 5 or more and move them around from day to day to make it looks like their is a murder of crows hanging around your property ... hawks hate crows because crow will gang up on one hawk and attack it . Also good ide to invest in a chicken health book

We didn't avail of the vacant/derelict grant as we thought it too bureaucratic and noticed estimates from all trades loading their prices when we mentioned we might be going for it - be careful. One grant that we did get and is available to you also is the drilling of a private well. You get that from your local Council and here in Leitrim they were very helpful. It is definitely worth it. Keep going. Keep smiling. Scream/shout/cry when it all gets too much - tomorrow is another day!!!

Binging the lot tonight and can’t tell you how envious I am of this. So good your daughter settled immediately and found friends (always a worry at that age). The water is such a big thing. I live in a hard water area in UK but when drawing water from our wells in Ireland, it’s like nectar, I immediately feel the benefit in hair, nails and teeth (sounds odd, but it’s true). You’re living my dream, best I can do is to come along for the journey and watch it progress. Good Luck! Erin go Bragh ✊☘️✊

For the folks that say, “you don’t do anything,” Cori, I’m pretty sure that much of what you do doesn’t make it on screen, because perhaps cooking, baking, helping your daughter with homework and getting to school, probably doing laundry, etc., aren’t perceived as video friendly activities like construction, operating a digger, gardening, etc. I guess I’m saying I don’t buy it that Cori doesn’t do anything. I really enjoyed the aesthetic beauty of Cori preparing and baking a beautiful loaf of sourdough. Those kinds of activities are just as valid.

I wish there was an awesome cheap effective pulley system for getting things up and down Hilary. Everybody brainstorm... 🤔 ☺ For lighter loads of vegies, etc., would a zipline down to the house be at all possible one day? You are probably laughing because it is too far but wild and crazy ideas sometimes lead to breakthroughs. Lol. ☺ Your unique land will make your channel and homestead unique. One day this channel will make everything easier!!! 🙂 All the absolute best to you three. 💛

Your positive attitude is such a joy to watch. I'm originally from Wyoming, and drilling wells happens a great deal...with less success than you enjoyed. Wyoming doesn't seem to come with an unlimited water supply. Lol. (Think high plains desert) Anyway, congratulations on a successful well, new chickens, and the beginnings of your garden. Asparagus is a good spring crop. The other veg you mentioned all sounds good for spring. I've never seen a slug in my garden. I don't think Colorado runs to slugs. My current efforts at gardening are dying in the heat. I can protect the plants from too much sun, but the current temps are running about 40°C + and plants are wilting. Actually, they're closer to gasping. Woohoo!!! That grant is a real life saver. I look forward to seeing what happens next. My fingers and toes are crossed for you!

Wow. Huge huge undertaking. Not easy in Ireland. Weather, bureaucracy and (the lack of) ease of getting things done. We undertook a similar situation when I was in my teens back in the 70’s. In rural Co Tyrone . 6 kids total. My poor mother who was from Dublin and emigrated to America 1957. Returns to my dad’s part of Ireland in Tyrone. But it was 5 of the best years of my life. Running wild over the gorgeous Irish countryside getting to know all my cousins. Good luck to you. You are doing a great thing for your daughter.

Hi, and thanks for following along! We couldn't start on the house until we received the Grant approval paperwork. So we were filling in time with fun "side quests". Placed them in the garden to fertilise and till the soil prior to it becoming fully planted. Also helps as the Rooster can crow his heart out without waking us

People did live on your land at one time. What did they grow, raise, adapt, to live there? Maybe a shift in thinking is warranted? So much hard work so far. Maybe adjusting your expectations will reduce that? I mean this in only the most hopeful and positive way. Keep it up!
