Starting Out - Derail Valley: Overhauled - Ep 1 

Thank you, thank you, thank you for coming back to this game. It has changed so much. I haven't played it in ages. But am looking forward to having the time to revisit. I am so thankful that a talented presenter can update us all on this game.

If you wanted to have a bit more fun with the game, I suggest looking into mods. Things like "Shunter Fan Cooling Mod" which does as the title says by giving active cooling at the cost of horsepower and fuel efficiency, or "Remote Dispatcher" allows you (or a friend) to use a browser window to remotely view the map, locos, carriages and switches. They can check job numbers and operate switches, even control shunters to prep jobs for you.

Derail Valley is poised to become the best train sim out there in terms of "feel" IMO. Even the old version gives you a sense of weight, inertia and power that I always felt was lacking in the other train sims, and I can't even imagine how good it will become when this new version comes out.

I've noticed that the best way to tell which direction the switcher is going is to look at the metal rectangle position on the pole. If it's on the left side of the pole, it'll turn left. the right side will turn right. That way you don't really have to understand the / and \ symbols because in a panic you can get them mixed up. Also, the switcher setting on the coms radio shows an arrow when you hover over them that tells you which direction the track is going.

This is a top 10 VR game for sure IMO. Loved setting all my notebooks on the dash and listening to a podcast as i coast around doing jobs.

29:19 Using the independent brake while hauling can wreck your wheels pretty quickly and cost a lot to repair. I don't use it at all with more than an empty car or two. The train brake takes longer to release but it's a stronger brake so you don't have to apply much - 3 notches at most unless you're making a mistake and it'll still release quickly

33:55 Note that in the new update, brake heating is implemented. If you now get into the habit of using the independent brake this often, you really have a rough time in the next patch as you loose all your braking power by brake fade

I'm watching this a couple days before a steam sale hoping the game will go on sale then, just to get some last impressions before comitting to it. All I can think of with every little thing that happens is "god this is going to be so cool in VR" so I am thoroughly sold

Thank you for getting back into Derail, you were one of the first I started watching playing it way back when. I was even thinking about telling you about all the new stuff as it came out to try to convince you to get back into it. Love to see a new series of Derail again!

THANK YOU! I haven't played this in years and just kind of kept it at the bottom of my installed list. You explained what you were doing extremely well. Keep it up and I absolutely will continue watching this series.

The last I saw of this was when you played it 4 years ago and it has sat in my wishlist sence then. It's crazy to see how far it has come. I think it would be better in VR due to being able to interact with things without looking at them directly, so I may wait for that.

Looking forward to more of these videos. I like how you walk and talk us through the processes and not just do everything while we watch.

I wish my computer could run this game, it looks like fun. You mentioned tankers making spectacular explosions; there's a RU-vidr called Hyce you may have seen or heard of who likes to make them do that; he calls them "explody bois". I'll be glad to watch you do a full series on this, and I wish you'd do another one on American Truck Simulator now that more states have been added to the game.

One thing I would look into is manual repair. Using the mechanic station is way more cost effective, especially at the later stages, however even at the early stage it can save you a lot in repairs! (Also gives you an idea on where to be more sensitive with the breakdown of what's been repaired and how much.)

I'm just gonna say, an independent brake to stop an actual loaded train will not work. The way to use the train brake is bursts, you quickly pull and release it and it'll apply for only a few seconds as opposed to moving lever to apply and keep it applied.

Awsome, i revisited this one too a month ago, a buddy of mine wanted to see it. Good idea to get your licenses in now, you'll be upleveled by the time that that new update hits.. to enjoy the new fruits of labour in a more relaxed way... Good luck on the new series, i'll be watching! :)

For VR users, it pays to get 'natural locomotion'. It's a tool from steam that you can use to trick your brain into not having an issue with free movement. Basically you swing your arms like you do while walking or running and it interprets that into free movement in a vr program. Works wonderfully.

When you linked up the brake line and applied pressure it reminded me of the Gard de Lyon incident from 1988 and then when you went downhill and was worried of going off the rails it then reminded me of the El Cajon Pass incident from 1989.....so I know from that how important it is to have brakes on your train

I just picked this up and am enjoying it. I did my first few jobs before stumbling onto your video but I'm sure this will help. In fact, I was unaware of the shunter radiator being so effective in keeping the temps down; I didn't even consider that. Had a graphical bug where the engine and cars were coupled, but the coupler showed it was uncoupled. Was frustrating to figure out why the cars kept following me until I 'uncoupled' the uncoupled cars, then it successfully uncoupled. :D

This is great for people actually wanting to become a train driver for real, Simulation could be used in stacks of ways to learn, Not just flight simulators can teach you step by step how to control vehicles you thought you never could, I started my simulation journey you could call it, With Sim Racing, Tried Euro Truck and found it to be extremely relaxing, Enjoyable for that relaxing gaming day, But now I want to get a joystick or flight stick and try may hand at flying a plane, lol, And now I want to try the train simulation now, lol, Simulation hobby can become an expensive hobby, But done right though and you can get it done at a cut cost, I am even thinking of getting a used or refurbished flight stick for now, I am not bothered by the fact it have been used, It is only a flight stick, But yeah I will be trying my hand at the MSF as soon as i got the flight stick that is, I seen a video of a dude using the Logitech steering wheel for a flight stick, lol, Myself though I would rather use what is meant to be used, A flight stick, lol.... Great video though showing you the in and outs of setting up your license ect, My dad was a train driver for a long time, He have been really ill, Thought we was loosing him, But thank God and the NHS, My dad is pulling through, Getting better, I prayed for my dad to get better and he have, The NHS are amazing as well, Amen for their care, I am thinking of putting a little small form factor PC together for him, Mom and Dad got small place, But an i5 12th gen with one of the AMD GPU's would be enough, I can do my first POV PC build then as well, Be great for my Dad to come home after month after month of being sick to come home and start driving trains again in his little PC room, Gave me ideas after seeing this vid to be honest, I think my Dad would actually love to walk down work lane on a PC, The dev team who put this together are an amazing team, This attention to detail is almost staggering, My Dad always said it is easy to start a train, Try stopping it on the station for passengers, I am understanding why now, lol, Driving a train sounds like life it's self, lol.... Oh yeah hats off to the detail you put up for your site, Looks like a nice PC set up, Will check out more of your vids later on, I am about to do some Simulation myself, Peace......

For a minute there I thought the update had already been released and I'd missed it.

Just a bit of a tip, you can manually turn the turntable with the handles. It's much easier than being in the little controller hut where you can't really see. Especially for turntables with multiple tracks coming out of it. Also, it's a good idea to memorise the keybinds for the train controls, so you don't have to constantly look down at the levers to operate them.

This would be a good game to create a tablet app so you can use your tablet to see everything while navigating and keep open what you need

I had nearly everything and the co-pay was horrific especially if you derail and blow up an oil train. I just went back to this game and had to start again from scratch .. it didn';t remember my last save.. oh well , still fun.

You can use your mouse wheel to control the controls in your train cab, it is better then puuling with your mouse! Try it out, if you want!

You do have to be careful when jumping off a moving train. Especially if you're playing with a self imposed challenge of never using the personal teleporter.

This game, but the ability to make custom maps and mods for it, would be epic.

Not sure how realistic the game is when it comes to the temperature but theoretically the faster the train goes the lower the temperature should get because of increased air flow. The overheating issue may actually be due to taking it too easy. I'd imagine that fan switch on the dash would be for the engine, no? Try flipping it when the temperature rises, see if it works. Double-heading is an interesting topic for debate as you would initially think that you're doubling your running costs but in reality it was actually quite the opposite. The BR Class 20's were a bit of a disappointment with their lack of power and cab at one end, meaning in reverse they had horrible visibility. They were very nearly retired after just a few years and replaced by more powerful locos until some bright spark had the genius idea of coupling two together and pointing them in opposite directions. Cabs at each end! Having the two together made them more powerful and much more efficient than their proposed replacements as now having twice the power meant each loco would have to work far less than usual. They were even still lighter than more power locos when paired and because they were much shorter Bo-Bo's they could navigate tighter points and curves. Pairing them up turned out to be one of the best decisions BR ever made and they lived very long work lives all over the network working in pairs. They're still around today, some 60-odd years later!

Never played it nor seen a playthrough nor played it, but have seen it in thumbnails on RU-vid. Looks interesting and for now within what is I can imagine is within my workload. but we'll see if I buy to to try for myself after some episodes of the miniseries and the difficulty increases.
