Ian, as a small business owner I can relate and empathize. My industry has seen huge changes and competitive pressures over the past few years. It's not a sad fact, nor a happy fact. It's just a fact. And one that will continue. That said, your passion and willingness to invent and re-invent will always serve you well. Truly what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Hang in there.

I found myself in a similar situation. I ran my small business successfully for 17 of the 21 years I had it and tried to do a lot of things to keep afloat but at the end I just couldn't. It's really stressful, really scary and challenging but it's just part of life. I'm 100% confident that new opportunities will show up for someone that's incredibly dedicated, hard working and kind hearted as you. Cheer up Ian! the best may be still to come@@EssentialTennis

I admire your honesty and transparency ❤ I was out of tennis for 20+ years. I started playing again in Feb 2022. Your YT videos, published book, FB groups, RT matches, courses and emails have given me strength and ability to continue--less frustration and blaming; more studying, practice, matches and staying healthy. THANK YOU!

Thank you for all you’ve done and do to grow the game of tennis. I love your book and your courses! I look forward to your next adventure.

Like you I grew up in Wisconsin, but in Madison. I was late to tennis and parents didn’t have the extra money for lessons as a teen. So I mostly figured things out from hitting against a brick wall and watching others in the 80s. Flash forward to today, I’m a very popular full time tennis pro at a top club in Houston the past 4 yrs. Before that I was a tennis pro in NYC. With hundreds of students I have always shared links to your content with great feedback. I have always been proud of your passion and work as a fellow Wisconsinite. Job well done!

Ian, it’s great that you are reinventing yourself. Clearly you are passionate about Tennis. With reinventing yourself, I would highly recommend reading VIC BRADEN’s book Tennis for the Future and the revised Tennis 2000 and every video of Vic on RU-vid, especially the ones about biomechanics. Good luck!

I always tell students that I am referencing someone else’s material and direct them to your RU-vid page. Sometimes I unabashedly watch your videos WITH my students because you present the information so well, I know they are getting good value for their lesson time. Thank you for your passion, your innovation, and your endless hard work. Can’t wait to see what lies ahead for Essential Tennis!

Hi Ian. I found your videos 18 months ago when I picked up tennis again after 15 years away from the game. Your knowledge and method of coaching/explaining have been so helpful for me as I've fallen back in love with the game. I wanted to say thank you for your dedication, hard work, and talent for coaching and providing tennis knowledge through this medium (not an easy feat.) Thank you for sharing the good and the bad here and having this difficult conversation about what you've experienced with this business/channel. I'm looking forward to continuing to support you, the content, and your channel as you start over. Thanks again!

I just watched your video, and I must say how heartfelt and heart wrenching it was. You are one of the good guys, I share your name (Ian and Essential Tennis) often. It's been a rough few years for any business, you are not alone. You have provided so much to the tennis community in honesty and from the front, the reality that we as rec players face. I would like to personally thank you for that. And you are correct, I have several tennis skills subscriptions but yours is the one I always make time to watch. You have a gift in presentation and in making us understand the lesson. It's a new chapter for the business world in general, for online, brick and mortar, with AI taking a front seat (is it real or is it ....). Lots to ponder and wonder. Keep doing what you're doing, find a new way or keep doing the same way but more aggressively or differently. You will figure it out, but in the meantime, I appreciate you immensely and what you bring to the tennis community; you are "The Guy" for the rec tennis community. Believe that. I'm sure everyone else does too. In gratitude, Tracey

I feel for you mate. Different circumstances, but similar outcome. My wife got really sick and then the pandemic, I couldn't focus on my business full-time for around 5 years as I was a full-time care giver, I had to lay off almost everyone in my company, down size, close down locations, within a whisker of going under. But now rebuilding with a skeleton crew and starting again. Slowly, but surely building back up again. I hope it works out for you and James and I'll keep watching the content. Good luck.

Wow, that hits so close to home. My wife was just in the hospital a long time and needed a big surgery. Didn't want to get into that in this video, only bringing it up to let you know that I completely understand what you're going through and it's INCREDIBLY hard. You're a good man for prioritizing her health and her safety. Hopefully she can be well soon and you can turn things around. God bless.

@@EssentialTennis Thanks Ian. Wives and kids; they love to give us gray hairs, don't they? But there's nothing like the love of a good woman. I'm sure your love and support helped your wife get through those difficult days and sped up her recovery. My wife unfortunately suffered hypoxic brain injury when she had a cardiac arrest. For some time she couldn't walk, talk, feed or dress herself. She improved though, and life has improved for both of us since she relearnt to walk and talk, and do some things for herself again. She will always have the brain injury and struggles with that day to day, but we got some of what we had back, so I'm grateful for that. Actually I started playing tennis again as a way to spend time with my boys and for my own health and mental well being. That's how I came across Essential Tennis. So thanks for your quality content, it has helped me get back into tennis and share it with my boys (especially my eldest who is crazy about tennis). :)

The birth of RealTennis out of the atrophy is an absolutely powerful element that has a lot of legs left. Truely. Amazing and still the best in its genre/market. Hope you refer both channels to each other. Have the brands reconnect. (I loved that time and space in the warehouse. Maybe you can find a great one once more! As part of new directions) It seems you also really love doing that type of presence, and the product of it. In a sense it's like the podcast to your educational content. It's a more personal casual vibe. You pop off the screen, during matches and commentary.( I mean not as much as Scott but heck who does.) I hope RealTennis remains part of your focus on ET. All the best to you.thank you and respect from Europe.

Although this is about tennis, it's not about tennis. It's about business. You're clearly passionate about what you do and it shows. Personally, I moved away from the channel due to one of the players involved (I won't mention any names). I wasn't interested in some of the things he said and the manner of delivery. But I digress. This is a reset. Resets are opportunities and you can take all of your passion and focus it on the reset process by looking at it, not as a setback, but as pure opportunity to recreate something entirely new. I have total confidence you will do that. As I look now, you may have lost people, places, equipment, revenue, etc. but you do still have 300K followers. That's nothing to sneeze at. The people that are still here believe in you and are all excited to see what the nexts version of ET will bring. You're a genuine, sincere and passionate guy. There's a shortage of that these days. You resonate with a lot of people. That's a huge tool and advantage and you'll leverage that just fine. Wishing you much success! Stay well!

Very transparent, honest and from the heart. Got into the channel during the pandemic, mainly for the matches which are entertaining and quality content .... especially the smack talk! It's clear how invested you are in the subject and business and it's clear how challenging the recent phase of the journey has been for you. As we say in the UK, you look knackered. Only advice I would give you is to look after the important stuff - your health, wellbeing and family. After that, nothing else matters. If content doesn't get uploaded the day you want, nobody dies and nothing explodes. Having said that, everything happens for a reason so good luck with the reset and look forward to seeing the next chapter.

Having a small business is a grind man, gotta keep on reinventing yourself in this sphere, especially online. One area that is often overlooked in the online tennis world is there aren't enough breakdown of strategy, shot selection, tactics, technique of PROFESSIONAL matches, and why a player was able to either play so well or what they were doing wrong to lose a match - or where their technique went south on a certain shot. It's always really interesting to hear from the commentators why something went awry or a breakdown of an awesome shot in slow motion (they used to do this a lot more with the likes of Cliff Drysdale breaking down Novak's forehand for example). With someone who has the size of your audience on RU-vid, I bet that a lot of people would tune in, I know I would! These types of videos could separate you from the rest of the online tennis channels IMO.

It's not about you, it's the world that changed. So maybe you'd have to reinvent yourself coming up with something new nobody's offering, you already did it with your "ET"! Go for it buddy!!!

Social media has allowed almost anyone to make a living if they wanted to. But the difficult part has always been longevity. Only the very best have managed to survive the ups and downs of social media, identifying the changes and updating their content model. Whether it's completely changing what content they put out, or simply just how they present it. It's a tough process, but I wish you well. I've not only come to this channel for help with my own game, but also with help on how to coach as I began my own coaching journey last year. Good luck moving forward 👍

You are right, There are 100s of tennis training videos out there, but Ian your videos are better that any, it’s because they make sense, they are to the point, and work !!! I am not very coach able person, especially virtually, but your training videos really sit with me and they are the only one I watch. I’m also a small tennis business owner here in Florida, but I’m a racquet stringer with small mobile pro shop, I’m really trying to start RU-vid channel to create content to help other players and your channel and couple others are my inspiration so thank you for that. Hi Ian. As you know, I have been following you for many years. So many wonderful instructions and insightful words. I can not thank you enough, Ian. As I was watching this video, you were getting sadder and sadder as the time goes to the end of the video. I could tell from your eyes. Don't worry much Ian. Everything will work out great in the end. If not, it is not the end. (a quote from a movie). I believe that. As long as you work hard, believe in you and being truthful to yourself, no matter what, at the end, you will come out as a winner. Also, by the way, "Being a winner" is over-rated anyway, ha ha. There is a tennis motto that I always remember : I never lose. Either I win or I learn. Ian, there is no actual a winner or a loser. It is just a part of life that we all go through. As we go through, we become more humble, more experienced, more wise.... in life. I wish you the best, Ian. for you and your wife and two kids. Keep on trying and keep on working. Thanks Always. PS: the mustache & goat-tee gotta go. Without that, you will have so much success, ha ha. Just kidding.

Welcome back legend! Yours were one of the first videos I looked at when I grabbed the racquet for the first time 2-3 years ago, at the ripe age of 34. I'm 37 now and have learned to play with both hands (all but the serve which is still only with the right), and I remember how much information I got from your videos and how I liked your approach to distilling that info. Thanks for that and here's to great new beginnings! 🥂

Ian, I have been following your channel for several years now and more recently became a monthly supporter. We have a similiar passion for tennis and I can apppreciate how hard these past few years have been for you. Keep hanging in there! I also wanted you to know how much I appreciate your "live action" videos and that you recently played my son (Midwest championships against Ohio). As a psychologist, I also appreciate your (and Jame's) commitment to family with your wife's staying at home to raise the kids. GOOD LUCK in the future.

Nobody does it better than Essential Tennis. I didn't play for 15 years between playing on the high school team and a coworker recruiting me to play and helping me rediscover my love of the sport several years ago. Whether it's been watching ET content, reading Ian's book, or enjoying the Real Tennis channel (honestly I find it more entertaining, interesting and learn more from it than pro tennis), I feel like Ian has kind of been with me on the journey. I'm rooting for you and will keep coming back for more!

Dude, keep it going, you are one of the reasons why I simply cannot play enough tennis. I started playing about 3 1/2 years ago and watch all your videos. And my passion for tennis is off the chart. I play/practice about 15 hours/week on the court, and have a tennis centered diet and exercise regiment off the court as well. I only wish I would have had your vision when youtube was in it's early stages. I wish I lived near you, I would totally work for you for free!

Hi Ian. I’ve just retired early and only now found the time to start looking on the internet for ways to improve my game. Even though you are now in this very competitive environment, your material stood out from the crowd as the best instruction, delivered in the most supportive and empathetic way. I’ve had a bit of experience in teaching around tennis (line umpires, actually) and I soon learnt what you know: if students are taught the reason for doing something and shown supportively whether they are really doing it or not, they will develop great techniques and improve. Excited to see where Essential Tennis goes next and best of luck to you 👍🏻🎾

Kind of figured that, but still really sad to hear it. As a teenager I used to turn to your videos for reconsidering what I am doing on the court. You are a pioneer and truely a legend of youtube‘s tennis community. Also you lead the field in quality for a long time. Nowadays there is so much content out there. A lot of them probably inspired by you. But sadly for your business with a lot of competition there usually come others who explain equally as good or even better. I thought your shift to the concept of the Real Tennis channel was glorious. Sadly it apparently isn’t a success, even though it also pioneered the idea of high quality videos of amateur tennis. While I stopped consuming instruction videos I still watch every one of those videos. I hope you find another great idea. I am rooting for you :)

I’ve got a music business and the trends you outlined have been similar. Also, I heard a segment on NPR that was looking at how businesses moved through the Covid years. They said Music and Sports businesses (and a few others) did really well during Covid but post Covid they have suffered a loss of business and have had to “trim down” substantially, and re-invent their business model. So, you’re not alone and it seems there are bigger trends that are affecting small businesses like yours. You’re doing a great job and your passion will continue to move you into the future. Congrats on all of your past success and we’re all looking forward to your future success!!! Great video, AS ALWAYS! 🎾

Dude! Thank you for your video, and your videos. I have always enjoyed them, and your sense of fun and passion and your clarity and ways of explaining things. My heart goes out to you in and around having to let go of your team. Years ago I owned a clinic, and having to focus not only on my core work but also the work of keeping the cash flow going was a lot. Too much, in fact. I, too, eventually stripped down my operation to the point where it was just me, and I couldn't be happier. Good luck in your next steps, and may the creativity flow freely for you and James!
