I took an intro Botany class in 1980 at the University of Montevallo, Alabama. The professor was a very nice gentleman in the classic Southern style. He was known for leading nature walks and butterfly watching outings. Imagine my surprise a few years later when I read "With the Old Breed"

That is awesome beyond words. I’ve heard audio recordings of Eugene Sledge and he is a consummate storyteller. I don’t think Timmy from Jurassic Park really captured his accent correctly. Though to be fair that old timey Gulf Coast accent is pretty difficult to imitate if you’re not from the area

Thank you for keeping the vast majority of Chesty Puller's speech at the beginning of episode one. Chesty is an absolute legend in the Marine Corps and is the most decorated Marine in American history. To say that we Marines look up to him is an understatement, but also that speech really underlines the spirit of the Marine Corps.

Well, many historians say the Pacific Theatre is more brutal than the European Theatre. Aside from the challenges of the ocean, jungles, tropical diseases and climate, most Japanese military leaders disregarded the Geneva Convention, many POW suffered hell and many were brutally executed. It's so brutal that US resorted to 2 atomic bombs just to end the war.
@intrepidapollo

Given that Japan attacked the U.S (Germany actually attacked and sank a U.S ship first, but Roosevelt prevented the public from knowing), and used the plan that an American Admiral devised a decade earlier (an actual simulation using grain flower in sacks as bombs) contributed to this being a very personal war for the Americans. I thought this series is the better of the two - in the fighting aspect. Both series had exceptionally good actors that really took their portrayals seriously. Couple these two series’s with the Ken Burns docu-series “The War”, and you can really be amazed at the capacity of ordinary people becoming something that seems mythic today.

So glad that you are doing this series. The companion piece to 'Band of Brothers.' My Dad (God rest his soul) was a WW II veteran stationed in Europe in 1945. As the war ended there, he would have definitely been redeployed to Japan as part of an invasion force had the War in the Pacific not ended when and the way it did. Dad always told me through the years that he did not think he would have survived had he gone to Japan. So we should all be thankful for the Greatest Generation, who made it possible for us to be here today. Thank you this channel, Ames. You are a kind-hearted, lovely person.

As a Marine who served in the 1990 Gulf War and then Somalia, I had the pleasure of meeting many Marine veterans who have served in other eras like WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the current wars of Iraq & Afghanistan to hear their stories. I've met and talked with 2 Marine Code Talkers about their time in WWII and also met another Marine who survived the Frozen Chosen march in Korea. I even remember meeting one Marine who served on active duty and saw service in WWII, Korea & Vietnam. The craziest and wildest stories I've heard are from the island-hopping campaign Marines. I met a Marine who fought on Iwo Jima and he spoke about how all his buddies got wounded or killed while describing how heavy the volume of fire was by machine gunners, artillery, and anything else the Japanese fired at them. He said that by the end of the fighting, he felt amazed that he survived. Another Marine who was listening to the story asked him why.... and the old Marine said, "Imagine running across a football field while it is pouring rain and then arriving at the other side with only a few drops of wetness. Anyone would feel amazed about that and that's what it felt like making it off the beach."

This is definitely a harder viewing experience than Band of Brothers, but still worth it to see what the Marines went through in the Pacific. As a Navy Veteran who has been all over the Pacific and the Middle East, I have been to some of the places in the Pacific depicted in this series. It is a very sobering and humbling experience to walk on ground where people fought and died. I felt the same during a trip to Gettysburg before I joined the Navy. Some of the people in The Pacific I had already heard of from watching different documentaries about World War Two, like Bob Leckie, Sid Phillips and Eugene Sledge. And I thought that Joseph Mazzello, who played Tim in the original Jurassic Park, really brought Eugene Sledge to life, as did James Badge Dale as Leckie and Jon Seda as John Basilone. And, even though he is not in the entire series, I respect William Sadler's portrayal of legendary Marine Lewis "Chesty" Puller, who once famously defined retreat as attacking in the opposite direction. Lastly, as a United States Sailor who served aboard amphibious troop transports during my time in the Navy, I have met more than a few Marines and have the utmost respect for them. Semoer Fi, Marines.

Not just the grounds you walk on. The seas around Guadalcanal are hallowed - pretty much one of the few, if only places where the USN and IJN fought at parity. The sheer amount of sunken warships in the Slot got it named Ironbottom Sound - the place Navy paid blood for the Marines.

Hindsight fact known now about the naval attack that the marines see during the night. Japanese Vice Admiral Mikawa lead a strike force of several cruisers and destroyers down the water islet known as the Slot to the marines. He had maneuvered in such a way that he had completely avoided the daytime air searches and managed to slip between allied patrols due to them having insufficient ships to cover all of the open water. Mikawa had achieved complete surprise against the allies. The RU-vid Channel Montemayor gives an impressive video detail about the battle of Savo Island, and is definitely worth watching for background on the scene mentioned.

I gotta respectfully disagree. I believe Band of Brothers was a far superior show. One thing we don’t focus on as Americans when talking about Guadalcanal is while the sickness, hunger, and jungle conditions were bad for our marines they were way worse for the Japanese who over the campaign lost ~10,000 men to starvation/sickness due to us preventing their resupply while only ~8500 died in combat.

Everyone talks about Midway being the turning point of the Pacific war but really Guadalcanal is where it turned as each side ground each other down till only one could keep fighting on, battered and bloody, and that was the US. If you ever want to read a book on the subject, I recommend Neptune's Inferno by James Hornfischer that goes into to great depth on the campaign but tells it in a way that most anyone can understand.

What you’re seeing with the Japanese tactics is a big difference between US tactics. The Japanese valued the blade and overwhelming the enemy by sheer numbers. The US valued the skill of marksmanship and establishing fire superiority. The Japanese got away with their tactics in China against an unskilled force. When they met the US Marines the Japanese were forced to adopt defensive tactics in future battles with many leaders constantly arguing against the suicidal and tactically pointless bonsai charges that they’re culture essentially demanded as a symbol of honor.

Ichiki Rentai was not supposed to attack at Alligator Creek until the other forces showed up to coordinate assaults on other parts of the line. Col. Ichiki was too proud to wait and committed his regiment against the Marines prematurely. Only one company of Marines, outnumbered 9-1, destroyed the whole regiment. Ichiki committed sepuku. This battle for the ridge over Henderson Field is when Gunny Basilone earned his first Medal of Honor. He almost single-handedly one that fight by his actions with the machine gun platoon.

Chesty Puller went on to fight in the Korean War. His son Lewis joined the USMC to fight in Vietnam. Chesty was really worried because he didn’t trust the leadership in the Corps. Lewis stepped on a mine and lost his legs, his left hand, and fingers in his right hand.

"With The Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge is considered by many historians to be the finest and most unflinchingly accurate accounts of an infantryman's life not just for WW2, but of ANY war. It is one of the most gripping and sobering reads - there is no superfluous literary "artistry" - it is looking through a crystal clear piece of glass. The later episodes of the Pacific are mostly from his accounts. It was a totally brutal and different psychology than the Western Front that left both sides dehumanized - much of the decisions that drove Hiroshima/Nagasaki were because of the brutality and ferocity experienced on tiny little islands that no one had ever heard of - the feeling was if Japan would defend those tiny islands with that much force and determination, how much worse would the main island campaign be?

This series hits hard. It shows why the warriors of European theater and the Pacific Theater were two different experiences and did not relate to each other. There is a part of Marine Corp training called the Crucible it in a lot of ways mimics what the 1st Division Marines went through. The spend 56 hours with very little food or sleep achieving tasks and goals as real as moving miles on foot. At this time most of the teenage men who went to war were men who's fathers had see WW1. Most had fathers that did not hug them and say "I love you" THEY went out and provided for the family that alone said I love you And as always the Marines were armed with weapons from the previous war. Such as the water coed 30 cal Browning machine gun.

Growing up in the 60's , the WWII Veterans were running the Country. You could always tell which ones had been in Europe, and which had been in the Pacific. The European Theater Vets, had made their peace with their experiences, for the most part, rarely if ever spoke of their Service. The Pacific Vets left a big part of their Souls on those islands, never seemed relaxed, and still harboured a Real Hatred for the Japanese.

Your eyes adjust. But every muzzle flash screws that up and you have to readjust. Marines of that era - and even mine - were trained to close one eye to keep night vision on one side. Not ideal, but they did what they could. Semper Fidelis.

The Japanese on Guadalcanal weren't expecting an attack, so the Marines captured the airfield very quickly - then had to defend it, and then take the rest of the island. This took months and involved Army troops later in the campaign. In later battles the Japanese tried to stop the attack at the water's edge (Tarawa, Peleliu). Later still (Okinawa), they allowed the US to land and then tried to lure them into attacking fortified positions...and they were very good at fortification.

Love your reactions. As others mentioned it’s intense. For anyone that love The Pacific and history and wants more check out the podcast called Hardcore History by the incredible Dan Carlin. The series is called Supernova In The East. It won’t make you SIDE with the Japanese but getting the historical and cultural context from the Japanese perspective makes the horrors and brutality…make…sense…almost. That context adds a humanity to the history that makes it make more sense in some ways, not that you agree but understanding HOW they as a people got to 1941 is eye opening. With the lens of time we can see every misstep and bad decision that led them to war with China, Korea, Philippines, and ultimately the Allieds.

31:08 the Army usually gets priority when it comes to new gear and supplies. This is because the Army is a much larger branch of service than the Marines. Sid saying “Army gets the new shit and we fight with stuff my grandfather used” when looking at the rifles in the crate is only partially true. The rifle being shown in the crates were M1 Garands, the first widely issued semi automatic rifle. At the time, the higher ups in the Marines were not sold on the brand new technology, so they decided that all of the active duty Marines fighting overseas were to be given the older, but reliable, M1903 Springfield, which was used in World War I and all the state-side Marines were given the M1. By the time of Guadalcanal, the Marines had already adopted the M1 Garand, but because the 1st Marines were already in New Zealand, there was no time to re-equip all the Marine rifleman with the M1, so they sent them into battle with 1903s.

After watching this, it took me awhile to shake my new-found hatred for the Japanese. The sounds were all around me and I felt as if I was right there with them....but with central air. I have yet to watch Band of Brothers, but it's on my list. I laughed and cried tears of anguish and joy. It was quite a ride.

Buckle up. The main thing to keep in mind is that this series will cover the entirety of WW2 in the Pacific Theatre. Band of brothers only covers about a year and a half, roughly. Band will basically start halfway through this series. Covers several different groups as well

The Pacific isn't as renowned as BoB or Saving private Ryan but, I often attributed that to it being one, if not the most brutal depiction of combat in Second World War EVER made. It's ironic to say but I grew up with the Pacific. I was just about to hit my hiatus in my interest in conflict history when I was getting into high school when the Pacific Came out. I watched it countless times since then and it's my personal favorite. Just a warning, you aren't ready for the ending. Even us seasoned military historian are blubbering mes when ever we see it.

34:40 Limit Sticks: used on any fixed position but primarily on MG nests to mark the left and right limits of their field of fire. That way you only focus on your assigned area when things go nuts. The fields of fire will overlap, but the intent is to ensure maximum coverage across all squads.

The European theater of war was Hell. The Pacific theater of war was the 666th layer of the Pit of the Abyss. I suggest you watch Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima back to back. Both are about the battle for Iwo Jima. The first is from the perspective of the US. The second is from the perspective of the Japanese. Clint Eastwood co-produced both and directed the second.

Band of Brothers was mainly about the bond between the men of Easy, and how that bond can be tested in war. The Pacific goes all in on the true horrors of war. Amazing show, probably my favorite of the two, but man is it brutal.

Great series. I often say I liked Band of Brothers more, but this is a different story, different front, different enemies. It hits hard, brutally hard at times. I won't say who (spoilers I guess), but I have read a few books from some people in this series. I still think of the books years later.

I had the absolute pleasure of working on this series as a marine for 4 episodes. I had just been in the invasion of Iraq only two years before we filmed. I left this show, filmed Indiana Jones, and left for a back to back in Iraq and Afghanistan. War is easier when you hear “Cut,” and everyone stands back up. My current civilian job is as a tech advisor working for the company that provided the uniforms, equipment, weapons and advising for this entire series, band of brothers, and Saving Private Ryan. It was such an honor to work on this show. My grandfather was in every one of these actions from 1942 to 1944, but was wounded on Iwo Jima…and when you get to that episode, you’ll understand. I’m excited that we get to join you for this series!!!

Early in the Pacific war the Japanese would what they called a Bonsai charge where they would attempt to overwhelm the Americans with shear numbers. Sometimes it worked, but most times they would end up losing a lot of men. That's what you saw in these first two episodes. On another note, I think the actor who plays Eugene Sledge was the young boy in the original Jurassic Park.
