Starting the Wood Shed - Setting posts and laying foundation logs

We set the posts in the ground for our wood shed build. This will be the perimeter of the shed and quicker half of this building project. Long logs are the foundation for the other half which will support our new sawmill platform as well as a room dedicated for drying out and storing the lumber we mill.
This multi purpose building should come together fairly quickly as long as we keep working and don't take too many days off to go fishing!

How long will untreated posts last there? Here in South Carolina 1-1/2, 2 years at most. If they're treated 10 - 15. Y'all have come a long way . Living the dream.
@gretchenthom4976
@gretchenthom4976 4 дня назад
In southern Missouri, treated lasts 10 years tops. Ask me how I know that.😅😂
@remotelifealaska
@remotelifealaska 4 дня назад
We are not sure how long the posts will last in the ground. We are frozen most of the year and we are in the gravel that drains any water quickly. The thought is once the bottoms start to rot we cut the bottoms off and slide in pavers.

are you going to dig out an area for a cellar. Also, are you going to lay down in vapor barrier and insulate under the subfloor. I' m totally impressed with the A-frame wench method. Probably how the Pyramids were built . lol

Ahem, you need a chipping bar. Digging those holes with that narrow spade is not a good idea. Plus maybe a post hole digger to remove the loosened soil/rock from the chipping bar.

The one question I have is should you be using pressure treated wood versus logs? Just thinking logs would rot faster. I’d be concerned bugs/ termites could be present. Otherwise a job progressing very well. 😊

Do you have your worry about frost heave? Watching the logs go in the homes seems a bit shallow?
@ginkgojen4584
@ginkgojen4584 2 дня назад
I came here to say this. In our area, frost heave is huge. Even posts buried 4 feet heave. Building on skids in our area is better. Speaking from experience in Trapper Creek...

Them poles should be put in below the frost line. The freeze thaw cycle will make that building fall down
@remotelifealaska
@remotelifealaska 3 дня назад
In our area the frost line is 8ft deep. Once on the gravel it doesn’t move much, maybe an inch at the very most. On top of the clay though it will move close to a foot in some spots but is usually less than 6 inches.
