First, although I don't really listen to or(obviously, I hope) produce hip-hop, I have learned a TON of great knowledge from your videos. I really appreciate it. Second... last I watched you, you were sitting on the floor at a coffee table, or something. This is a HUGE step up in video production and environment. Looks awesome
I used to start with drums for my whole music production career. Now I start with sound designing a lead for melody and foundation. I felt limited with doing drums since the pattern would be similar and the fact that the melody would be a groove in the pocket of the rhythm by the drums.
@@JaeFreshmendefinitely, also the deciding factor of why I start with drums is because I actually zone out and don’t hear the internal clock or metronome after a while when punching in a take. So I always either step-sequenced drums or finger-drummed.
Sometimes i start with drums, sometimes a melody. Sometimes i start with a bass line if one pops in my head. Gotta switch it up and keep it interesting/fresh
Starting out with drums is usually the best. And I say that as a producer who is more of a keyboardist. Tracking a melody and then adding drums can more times than not kill the vibe I had going. But if I have drums tracked first, I can track countless melodies/chords and the go with my favorite takes. But I always say there is no wrong way to create music, as long as it gets finished. Although sometimes I also statt off with keyboard/synth and create a wild intro and then work section by section until the song is finished. I also mix while Im creating. Lol. So it takes me a day or two to complete some instrumentals. I dont believe in making a bunch of beats everyday. I may go a few days without creating.
yea starting with drums definitely can lock in the groove right away, as someone that plays the piano it would help for sure to make a melody more simple thats still fire because you already have the pocket but yea producer should experiment more like a drill, and with finger drumming it can get crazy
Bought my 1st MPC last year. I switched from Maschine and your videos have been instrumental (no pun intended) in helping me progress on my MPC journey.
Wow Bro. I literally was about to let my melodics subscription expire this month since I haven't been using it... Now I'm gonna be back at ir.. I've felt more in the Grove using MPCs verses DAWs thanks
Picked up my MPC about 4 months ago, still learning it. Always get stuck on the drums especially with no music background. This video helps a lot, thanks!
Excellent video once again, small things you mentioned such as checking the volume when auditioning samples .So as to get a better idea how they work together with the other drum sounds .
This is dope. Im trying to learn the foundations of music theory and get a real understanding of time signature. I love seeing this breakdown of production. Ill def will be coming back to this.
I don't use a mpc but I normally start with the kick and a layered snare first then I go straight to the chords. Great video tho I found it very entertaining. The sample slices in the second section were really good. The final beat was also good. You got that mpc info and technical side eg the loading menus and sample chopping locked down. Peace from the UK
Sequenced noise music like this first so for trap I think it’s almost essential to get your cut, you can always layer and delete! Thanks for showing your workflow man
Wait, you don’t use fruity loops and teenage engineering hardware… hang on bro hang on shit where’s the fucking plant for your desk bro! Awnaw my birth certificate is Houston tx, but fuck bro I’m still too white!! 🤣🤣🥸 just goofing my brain goes nuts with scenarios at times🐸
man I've been using the MPC for over 10 years and I'm over here learning some dope things from you bro! Keep it going, and thank you for these videos man!
Always been my formula because starting with the sample forces you to makes drums to the samples. But a drum groove before finding a sample makes you chop different. Following a sample is why everyone’s sampled music sounds so similar to each other
My philosophy is that if my drums, all by themselves, don’t keep me nodding for 32 bars, I start over. This way, I know when I apply the butter, my corn will pop lovely. Peace! 👑
Definitely the best mpc I’ve ever owned! I love it so much. Thanks for these great vids. Can you please make a tutorial about the app you recommended for becoming a better finger drummer like Araab Muzik
I’ve been making music for 3 years and from my experience I’ve always started with chords/melodies/samples then the drums it just makes it so much easier to find the groove and fit the drums in idk what it is but the melody sounds speak to me more than the drums
I make beats everyday and recently a battle leage wanted beats and they only chose the beats i started with drums , while rappers who like to write to melodies they said those beats were generic kinda
I start with the melody because, when you hear a song normally, the melody starts, then drops the beat. So I usually start with my melody. Sometimes though, I hear something in the beat I make with percussion, and it just hits hard. So, I do both.
i agree 100% you have to start with the drums in rap and hip hop its not like other genres in reggaton for example you always start with the melody and build up from there the drums are almost the very last thing you throw on there but hip hop and rap you wanna lay down your drums first then add a looped melody with a couple drops and breaks and you gucci
You good bro with teaching. How long did it take to get to your level? I find myself stuck not exploring the full benefits of the mpc. How to get past that?
Bro between this live 2 and akai software shit is whipping my ass trying to be dope frustrated as a mug 😂 ima keep working at it Jae just don’t have enough paper to get lessons at the moment but I will soon 🫡⚜️💯
Bro u the best hands down ! I have question. Can u do a tutorial on how to use the sampler with creating your own sounds using it and making your own beat tags using the sampler? Thats something that alot of ppl not making tutorials on, on RU-vid. Ive seen videos of ppl with salt shakers, keys shaking, ect ect but they wasnt using the mpc and there were no tutorials.
Also you could start with melody/instrumenst first then make drums, then scrap original melody/instruments … leaving you with just drums … and from there start with the drums and they should be pretty dope already!
There is no secret sauce. Inspiration comes from everything. Could be a baseline, could be a string sample, drums, guitar keys, etc. Limiting yourself to starting with drums won't help you progress either. Say you find a really dope melody, being able to read it and program drums accordingly is vital.
There are no rules in any form of music. If its dope, its dope. Period. People want to push their views on others because they had trouble doing it the other way. Depends on the feel of the song I wanna make.
What's going on? I'm using the Latest MPC Software and when I'm in controller mode when I'm making a Beat! I see a Red Line come across the bottom of the Grid! And it do it often when my beat is on and when the sounds match! Why is that? I'm surprised you never talked about it. But I'm not using a standalone I'm using a MPC Touch
I just finished listening to Kanye's Bound 2 track - that had no drums, snares, nor hi hats, just chops and synths. If I wasn't listening closely, I wouldn't have noticed this. Do you know the secret to this phenomenon? Good video by the way
Great tutorial but everyone operates differently. Me? I listen to the sample and I listen to the drum pattern and listen to melody and then I start matching the drum patterns in my head and sound it out with the sample. Then I pick the drums and the rest is history....
I have to disagree here. The beat is the heartbeat of the song, but the sample/instruments* are the body and the mind. A heart has to adapt to the body of the individual as the beat has to adapt to the feel of the sample. The sample will dictate what type of beat you need, that is why you should start with the sample. You could start with the beat, and spend time with a sample/instruments* that will work *Instruments: melody and harmony, in case that the producer is not a sample-based producer.
I somewhat agree….. but u can manipulate a sample to incorporate into the beat. However if you start with a sample then you have to build the beat around the sample.
I usually add drums last, so the main sound dictates everything, each main sound is journey in and of itself. But, I will say that you can come up with more drum patterns than you can get a perfect match when going drums last.
ehhh i think most producers aren't drummers so that why their approach is not that solid but the video is not about which is better but more so why its important to experiment to bring back fun and creativeness in the beatmaking process
