@@D4Disdain I do appreciate that monarchy as a rational concept is a nonsense! They don't ride into battle or rule over their peoples anymore. Nonetheless, they act as a source of unity, continuity in a very violent and uncertain world. The Dutch and Belgian royals are far more inexpensive than the German or French presidents. They don't rule only represent a part of living history so what's the harm they are an innocuous institution. But they raise the profile of their small countries. Who can name the president of Portugal or Finland! Get my points?

Tegenwoordig zouden we dat eerder het Germaanse volk noemen. Hoewel Germaans een ruimere term is. De Nederlanders, Belgen, Duitsers, Luxemburgers, Denen, Zweden, Noren, en de Engelsen zijn allemaal Germaanse volkeren. In de 16e eeuw noemden de Nederlanders zichzelf vaak Duits of Diets, dat is mede de reden waarom we in het Engels ook nog bekend zijn als Dutch. Dat gebruik van 'Duits' is mettertijd verdwenen en wij noemden onszelf de Nederlanden. Na de val van Pruisen, na de Eerste Wereldoorlog, werd het nieuwe land Deutschland/Duitsland genoemd en werden haar inwoners Duitsers genoemd.
