Why wouldn’t the makeup go in items to be disinfected ?

Great Question - This is one of those instances where the NIC testing standards require all makeup to be disposed of in the trash. This standard has been mentioned at state board information sessions for quite a few years. This relates to the "No single use items allowed at state board." However, when it comes to makeup, it's pretty much all single use items because you are applying product directly from the original container- So with that thought, the makeup should be placed into the trash. While it might not seem logical to us, it's not worth losing safety and sanitation points for not doing it. You can always pull them out of your trash bag after you've left the exam. I thought you had to use two different mascara wands to avoid cross contamination.

The only cross contamination would be from double dipping. You can use one mascara wand to simulate application for both eyes, because you are moving from one eye to the other, it's still the same client. Remember to brace when working around the eyes and lips.
