Dmitriy Feodorovich Ustinov
30 October 1908 - 20 December 1984
Minister of Defence of the Soviet Union from 1976 until his death
On 7 November 1984, Ustinov did not preside over the annual Red Square Military Parade on the anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution.
First Deputy Defense Minister Marshal Sergey Sokolov stood in for Ustinov to both inspect the troops and deliver the commemoration speech.
Ustinov had contracted pneumonia in late October. Emergency surgery had to be performed to correct an aneurysm in his aortic valve.
His liver and kidneys later deteriorated.
Eventually, he suffered a cardiac arrest that killed him.
He was honored with a state funeral, and his ashes were interred in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis on 24 December 1984.

An interesting choice for defense minister, being that he was in the defense industry, and not a soldier like most of the other Soviet Marshals.

Soviet Marshal Ustinov died in Dec. 1984. Three months later in Mar. 1985 Gorbachev would come to power as USSR leader and his future political reforms who change his country Russia profoundly and leave a lasting mark.

@@tankista5885 Not likely. Ustinov was not the top leader of the USSR. He was only one of lower ranking ruling government officials. I doubt if he would have had that much influence on Gorbachev had he lived longer. Gorbachev would have probably replaced Ustinov if the Soviet Marshal have publicly criticized the USSR leader.

@@herondelatorre4023 probably, Ustinov was a very intelligent and experienced military leader, I am sure he would use army to destroy anti-soviets movments, but anyway the more percent of GDP is send to military industry, the less people have, so protests (for example in Poland) would be bigger and anyway soviet communism would fall, probably.. I hope you can understand my comment, I am from Poland and my English could be not perfect;)
