State of Jefferson (Full Documentary) 2014 | Oregon Experience 

I took a road trip a while back along the coast from northern WA to LA and back on I5. I found all the Jefferson signage and wondered about it and it’s history. Glad to hear the story!

I will say that OPB makes some great documentary films even about mythical states.

I want Jefferson to be a state

I live in Medford Oregon near the border. With our population growth and political views. You can see the state of Jefferson happening in the next 25 to 50 year's realistically. It takes time.

Started learning of this after buying land in Modoc county. I absolutely support this decision!

Grew up in north California from Scott where etna brewery is based and the old timers said that the Great Depression really wasn’t so devastating, times were tight but people could find work. In that time the valley had a flour mill , dairy, and like minded local producers. It was a very localized economy without a great deal of job seeking folks transplanting

It honestly means a lot to me because I grew up in New Jersey and always loved history i could name every president and state at like 7 or 8 but i was born April 13th same as Former President Jefferson and when my dad passed away my mom and my family drove across the U.S to Sacramento area where my moms side of the family is from and my uncle flying the Jefferson flag and now learning much more about it really just fits right in my life

I live in southern Oregon and would love to have a State of Jefferson. It’s that or be part of Greater Idaho. We are such a different people here and really have nothing in common with northern oregon or california.

It's common for people to quote Jefferson's statement about the need for rebellion or the one about the west being independent. Rarely do they cite the other founders who thought the ideas were nuts.

So ur telling me where my family lives in Oregon is considered “Jefferson state” oh wow.

As a resident, I stand with the State of Jefferson... if not for the simple fact that Gavin Newsom doesn’t give a flying f*ck about us. We need our own state.

The 'founding fathers' gave us the tool to make this happen. Unfortunately, they couldn't give us the backbone to use it at the same time!

I see signs, flags, and banners of the State of Jefferson as far south as Fresno county. Not just in the Sierras but down in the San Joaquin Valley. As a valley resident I am very supportive of the State of Jefferson as long as we are a part of it. Sacramento is nothing more than a SF Bay area enclave. The surrounding counties are, in my opinion, in the State of Jefferson. its growing more and more every year since people are realizing that we are not represented by the State of California. Farm country is honored to consider itself part of the State of Jefferson.

Build the biggest port on the west coast but build it with accommodation for automated trucks. Next.... more railroads.

It used to extend up to at least Aberdeen Wa.

Jefferson is necessary

Aside from whyoming its one of the most beautiful parts of the country. I'm moving to a Jefferson from the bay area. Not taking bay area politics with me. This part of the state doesn't represent me socially or politically. If it ever happened I'd be all for it!!!

I live in Southern California this is the first time of hearing this. It’s a breath of fresh air. The Government from Federal done to Counties and possibly Cities need to remind themselves that they are working for the People. Not the other way around. They all swore to the Constitution to protect and serve. And here’s Newsom trying to change the constitution and another example outside of California in New Mexico suspending the 2nd Amendment what’s that all about.

Thought about moving to Jefferson but the sight of the Iron Gate dam on the Klamath was as about as ugly a site of an unhealthy river I have seen too many times now. Hope the salmon runs of all the rivers of Jefferson come back some day. Not a fan of green algae in once crystal clear rivers streams and creeks and lakes. The right to water isn't a right to wanton waste and abuse. California ranchers and farmers, businessmen would suck dry the west before giving up an ounce of water. Bless the rains and floods. Happy Iron Gate and the other dams on the Klamath being torn down. Has to a middle path of "common" sense and sharing and conserving resources. Sacramento be darned to Hades. Waste not want not. Throw away and waste country can't last forever.

Anyone seen the news about Seattle's "Capital Hill Automous Zone"? I may not support their ideologies- but if a group of protestors can make that happen, with no organization, how much more can State of Jefferson succeed from California- with an established flag, declaration of Independence, pending State Constitution, plans for State/Local Defense, peace keeping, defined borders, State Citizenship, branches of government, history/struggle for liberty, ect?

With low or no taxes, how are you going to pay for infrastructure maintenance, national defense, new public construction, libraries, higher education, trade schools, statewide technology networks, airports, and coastal commerce construction?

There will never a state of jefferson sorry. California and oregon both state legislatures woul never vote for it. Imo personally i think they should have the state, but logic would suggest otherwise...

As a person that was born and raised in California. Hiked the pct and found myself stuck in this "state". This was the most difficult hitch of my life. The girl that drove me from Saeid to Yreka drove so fast her grandma had to puke out the window. yall do you.

Good thing it is a state of mind. Most people in Northern California surely will support it. I hear a lot about it, but I'm sorry I'm not in favor for states that self-declares statehood.

I understand the desire of the people to have their own state, but I have to wonder how inclusive it would have been. I didn't see one minority (non-white) person in this contemporary 2014 documentary - no Native American, Asian, Hispanic, or Black people were represented. Just how free and welcoming would the State of Jefferson have been if it had become an independent state (even today).

The state of Jefferson needs to be independent, and I mean it!

They complain about support? The per capita spend on political campaigns in New Hampshire is $17.00. In Oregon it's just $ 0.55 cents. So when they want help, just ignore them. The entire state just waits for handouts, so even though district 2 is 2/3rds of the state, the farmers get the free farm bill welfare, and they call themselves Republicans. They all know it all and that is why they will never come together.

Well 1st I hittchiked to Berkeley Ca in 1980 then spent some time hanging out with a bunch of pot growing hippies at the Josephine County CoOp around Grants Pass Oregon for around 6mos then hitched to Seattle where I went to Cornish and became a jazz pianist in Europe eventually. I'm all for it. The problem is that it's always going to be urban vs rural. So once it becones a state all the rural people will want to create another state because they're not being represented

N Cali citizens who want to be governed by conservatives need to work on turning Humboldt & Del norte counties into pro "Greater Idaho" voters. Need younger organizers to rally the people. Talk about "State of Jefferson" should be tabled until the break up or secession of Cal.

Hell yeah. I'm 35 and have never heard the term "jackass-able". I like the swag. Make this a state now!

No income, sales, or liquor (!) tax; all infrastructure (the lack of which was the primary impetus of secession to begin with!) would be paid for by taxes levied on other vices, specifically prostitution and gambling (meaning that these vices have to be legalized and supported adequately or there will be an inadequate tax base). I wonder if/how this plan/perspective has evolved.

I move up here in Shasta co. a few years ago and it is different then the urban areas. People up here don't pay a lot of attention to silly laws & mandates, they just don't care. When the pandemic hit you could hardly tell there was one. Stores, gas stations, etc were absent mask signs. Some might have wrote a few words on a piece of paper and any government building had all the signage and rules for masks. Building codes for out structures were ignored, my towns are unincorporated and property owner are very serious about their property lines...don't cross them without permission. Now the Marijuana growers are up here in spring, can't grow dope in the snow, but eventually they get busted. It is quite, peaceful, and not too expensive it was much better before the economy went down the tube. But the people are resourceful, if wood is too hight then cut your own, the county will let you cut some wood with a inexpensive permit. There's a lot of water wells up here with plenty of water. No sirens, traffic, airplane, etc. The toughest things I'd say are wild animals, be very careful going out at night I was attacked getting my mail one night. And the snow if you have a blower its not too bad if not, pick up a snow shovel...if you let you place go to heck I guess it's easy living, but if you keep your property up it's a lot of work and will last longer unlike the others, the weather will take its toll on everything. And you might make it through the fires. I guess it's all in how you want to live. If you pick the right spot to live, town is not far and you can shop, eat, and get medical attention... just about anything you want then drive back home and relax.

Diversity will be missing with that you become small oregon is vast and beautiful I like seeing all colors and cultures with equally for every age for all people

Let California secede and name Jefferson 50th state.

I'm up for it if Puerto Rico, Guam and D.C. are also included. And quite honestly, the rest of California needs to be divided, too.

East of the cascadea are 90% republicans. West of cascades are predominately democrats. All but 3 countys in oregon are red. But we have to live by what thise 3 countys want. Its egregious!

What would you gain with only one new state ran by another easily federally controlled bureaucracy; You need to expand the interest by giving ALL counties the right to statehood. Oregon became a state with 40,000 to 80,000 people, this should be a MAXIMUM amount of population needed to automatically establish statehood; If your movement put as much effort into encouraging ALL counties to demand statehood, you would have far more support because more communities would benefit. As importantly, breaking up the federal control by making so many states they could not control, you would break up the federal and large state power structures; and in so doing, empower local communities to have the adequate representation the Constitution intended. It’s been over 100 years, why hasn’t the state of Jefferson created a tax base that has increased their lot in life. Why is the state of Jefferson still so dependent on the tax base of their states largest cities. Why are they still a welfare state? Where will they get the funds to pay their respective states for the infrastructure the largest metropolitan areas have paid for. Are Oregon and California just supposed to give this up with no compensation?

I had to share this because I live in Texas, which wants to secede along with Florida and a couple other states. If Jefferson wants to join us, we'll welcome them with open hands.

Every western and mid-western state has large swaths of geographic area which feels collectively "underrepresented." Typically, they are, simply because they don't move the polls and they have absolutely zero economic impact. Politicians flock to largely popular urban centers because that's where everyone lives, that's where the economic power is, and that's the place that gets them into office. Why the hell would they give a shit about Drain? I do, but I don't live my life for re-election. It's common sense, really. Yeah, our farmers are vital, but let's not act like it's some nebulous, below the line non-profit representing a bevy of selfless, charitable causes. I think a lot of farmers forget that the universe turned before them and will be just fine after them, they care about farming because THEY farm, and they farm to make money, period.

Oregon and California get a real bad rap by outsiders, but a lot of people dont understand that the people in this part are very different. I have to say, this is the most libertarian section of the country there is. They hate taxes, love guns, work hard, are family orientated and of good character. They also think pot should be able to pretty much do as you please so long as you are not hurting anyone else. Unfortunately, places like Redding, Medford, and Grants Pass are in Oregon and California, and not their own state of Jefferson. Homelessness is the worst issue with this area. Get rid of the liberal policies protecting drug addicts and mentally ill people and we could clean the streets up. It honestly is one of the most beautiful places in the Country in my opinion, and industry is growing around the Rouge Valley area where I live.

I lived in Jacksonville OR and the state of Jefferson is the stupidest idea ever. Just be an Oregonian or Californian. Keep wishing for a state to grow meth, pot, and hillbillies. Hate to break it to you but before the colonizers came this region had its own name personality and that didn’t involve the silly stay of Jefferson.
