STATE OF MIND is the first African documentary feature film looking at mental illness disorders, and how they are treated and eventually managed.
It has been screened at international film festivals and won awards in Africa, Europe and the United States of America.
Award winning documentary filmmaker and journalist Hopewell Chin'ono follows the work of leading African psychiatrist, Prof. Dixon Chibanda.
Zimbabwean music superstar Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi wrote the documentary film soundtrack for State of Mind.
It is the last known piece of work he produced before he passed on in January 2019.
He also sings a full-length song at the end of the film, a classic from his catalogue.
The filmmaking process got assistance from osisa.org
For a High Resolution or Commercial copy of the film, please get in touch with Hopewell Chin'ono at hopewell2@post.harvard.edu or WhatsApp him on +263778658680.

Yes you're right...us Zimbabwean citizens have to try our best to help out here. I have a young bro who became mentally weak after moms passing. The challenge is that even if funds are available , there isn't much help in Zim for our folks . We need activity centres, rehabilitation centres , therapy centres that are AFFORDABLE or available and open to everyone without discrimination.

This has really made me happy in a way that there is people out there dedicated to the care of other people Commenting on the dentist condition, it sounds like he had bipolar and mania . Rumbi probably suffered from post natal depression which was initially left untreated hence they psychotic episodes . Mental health still remains a challenge in the black community the sooner the people speak up the better and they can start getting medication

Thank you for raising awareness. Mental health is a serious issue that Zimbabweans dont talk about. Its usually high in men because when they are young boys they are taught to be strong. When they cry they are told be like a man dont be like a girl. Girls cry it helps them infuture to open up when life get tough . Woman hold anger. Man sadness leading to addiction without looking for help. Addiction does not help with anything. To all the men out there seek help men are 4x likely to die from suicide than woman.

Clearly there is a lot of love as nd support. We probably need to raise more awareness so that carers and sufferers, can reach the support and not feel isolated and marginalised. With right treatment many can live fuller lives.

Absolutely wonderful work! Thank you Dr Sibanda, your work is so important and appreciated! These are such important programs that should be supported by the community and the government. Saddened by Rumbi's death, she was showing so much progress💛

Many thanks Dr Chibanda for raising awareness on mental health through this documentary. It has also brought a lot of memories of my previous job working in one of the psychiatric hospitals in Zimbabwe. And the Friendship bench is just what we need with the limited human resources in mental health. I learnt about it through a number of your publications when I was doing my MSC. God bless!!

Such a touching documentary..very sad about Rumbi her recovery was unbelievable.. hope Claude goes far and the good doc has done a good job of removing the stigma around mental health. The way he engaged with all the patients he spoke to them like normal people and not like they are stupid. Kudos to him and the whole team!
