The State of Oakland Sports with Mayor Sheng Thao. Checking in on all things A's/Howard Terminal/Coliseum and Oakland Roots.
On Tuesday, the Port of Oakland and Mayor's Office will hold a press conference that may end up looking more like a rally. A's fans are already posting on social media with the same energy they had during the reverse boycott -- MORE FREE SHIRTS! -- And with a potential relocation vote looming later this month, the City Council's vote on Tuesday could be the last chance for Oakland to make major headlines and show a unified front.
Stay up to date with the Baseball Stadium Saga on Twitter!

I really do not like Sheng Thao (she was my former city councilwoman) but I have to give credit where it's due. She is doing a really great job with trying to keep the A's here in Oakland. I love that she is playing hardball but she is also keeping it real about this circus that John Fisher is having. Thank you Casey for this interview

If she pulls this off and gets the Port, the Council and the people of Oakland behind her this could change the dynamic and the MLB owners who might change they're vote Nov 14th. There are a lot of what ifs but Tuesday's City Hall meeting is a crucial piece for the future of the Oakland A's.

@@hoapres how do you know this? Everything Casey and Mayor Thao (who was a concilwomen involved in the whole Howard Terminal project before she became mayor)are saying is true. The deal that could get done by January 2024 is hear in Oakland, not in Las Vegas. The A's and MLB are using Vegas to increase the Value of the franchise. For baseball to stay vibrant into the future, the MLB needs to bring it back to the grassroots. They need to honor their regional followings, especially fans that have become multigenerational. Its a damn shame that these franchises are playing hardball with American municipalities when it should be concerned about developing expansions in parts of the world that want to be "Major League", like the DR, or Puerto Rico or Mexico City or Japan. Except, now their focused on building more expensive options for fans during a time when viewership is at a decline and Soccer is becoming more of an attainable sport for the next generation..

Mayor Thao took over a mess left by prior mayors. A new stadium should’ve been built in 2002 at downtown Oakland Uptown site but former A’s owner Steve Schott showed no interest in it so he was no help along with former Mayor Jerry Brown. That would’ve saved the Raiders and maybe Warriors

@WiggleBabies
@WiggleBabies 11 месяцев назад
Absoluely not, it takes an owner to take over and invest his $1 billion while the city tosses in their $1 bil to the pot. MLB just didn't want Oakland to happen. Lacob already on record saying he would pay. Fisher can't afford it all, that's why they're waiving a relocation fee to save him. He's not even able to afford it in Vegas. He is definitely selling the team after he gets everything lined up. Probably a group of casinos.

Here's the rub, John Fisher's lawyers have told him that his team worth will gain why more in Las Vegas than in Oakland. This is why the A's and John Fisher picked Las Vegas over Oakland. It doesn't matter that the city of Oakland propbably had a better Stadium deal set to go over Las Vegas. Net worth. Valuation. This deal is all about total valuation. Why did NFL, NBA leave Oakland after a decade of trying to get a deal done and now MLB is on their way out? Mayor Thao wants everyone to believe it's the A's fault for leaving. If MLB thought Oakland was giving the A's a competitive deal then they wouldn't be waiving relocation fees and the other owners wouldn't support the move. The path of least resistance is for the A's to stay and an expansion team to go to Las Vegas but Oakland hasn't shown an effort until Las Vegas approved a deal. A's are spending a fortune making Las Vegas possible and now Oakland is taking the move seriously. Too little too late.

The NBA left because the Owners of the Warriors wanted to run their own arena an gain the revenue from concerts and shows for themselves. The City of Oakland couldn't sell the Arena to the Warriors, because they didn't own the arena. The reason the Raiders left is because the A's an Warriors wouldn't agree to leave the Coliseum complex for up to 18 to 24 months while a Stadium for both the A's and Raiders was built. Again the Raiders blame the A's and the City and County for them having to leave Oakland.

My question still remains the same, Fisher comes back to the table and Howard Terminal is built, are the fans showing up or not? I think Fisher isn't selling, but right now I can't see relocation happening without a solid plan, and A's have absolutely nothing but theoretical renderings and not even a solid plot of land. I would love Fisher to do the right thing and keep the team in Oakland, but if he does, are the fans coming out?

And just across Reno Ave. to the south of the A's new "stadium" is a place called Giles St. There's a big lot there. They had a big concert there back in 2017. It was called Route 91. Country music festival of all things. Well that little concert turned into far and away the worst mass murder in American history. Yep. 61 dead, 861 wounded. @bartphlegar8212
@bartphlegar8212 11 месяцев назад
Seems like the A's are dead set on building themselves a coffin at the Tropicana Hotel, and MLB is totally onboard with it. Not that Fisher is some kind of Svengali - hell the man hardly has a personality at all. It just seems to be some kind of weird, paraphysical call to some sort of lemming activity on Baseball's part. You'd think they'd have much bigger issues to deal with (like TV ratings for the most recent World Series bordering on irrelevance) than to waste time picking on Oakland fans. Yes. Mayor Thao and the Council are right to package this up with a resolution, put it in a box, put a bow on it, and send it to MLB. Problem is, Baseball has crossed the Rubicon on this travesty, and they know it. Manfred has blown all of his credibility on this, and his ego won't let him back out. Fisher is wistfully dreaming of hotdogs at Candlestick Park, while Kaval is standing in front of a mirror somewhere trying to figure out how to close his eyes. And the other owners? Crickets. Where I would have expected a maelstrom of dissent before, especially from the Steinbrenners and Henrys who have been getting fleeced by Fisher over the years, I hear nothing. Oooh, "They're playing their cards close to their chests". Uh, yeah. They're in a quandry and they don't have a clue what to do, so they do nothing. They'll take a vote. They'll sprinkle holy water on Fisher. What Oakland needs to do is to start building a legal tort case, and start planning how to spend the proceeds, and focusing on what to do with these two huge, very urbanized swaths of land at the Coliseum and Howard Terminal. Airport and waterfront! Ferry and mass transit connections! My gosh! Other cities would kill for just one of these opportunities! If the A's don't want to be a part of it, tell 'em don't let the door hit them in the ass...And what about the fans? Well, it's out of our control, isn't it? At least until somebody comes along with a new league with a community-based corporate ownership (think Packers) that will destroy the horseracing model that Baseball has clung to for over a century now. (Even when the ante is way higher than all but a very few (mostly unsavory) individuals can afford.)...Meanwhile, Oakland can go on to pioneer e-sports with holographic gaming facilites and other pasttimes that appeal more to younger generations...So the question is still, what happens to the Oakland fans? Some of us become Giants fans, yeah. But many of us just stop caring. And that, MLB, is the sucking of the water off of the beach ahead of your demise...
