Listener from the US here. When I voiced my support of Ireland, Norway, and Spain for recognizing Palestinian statehood, the typical response I got from right-wingers was "Why don't you move to one of those countries?". To which I replied, "I would love to."

Shouldn’t journalists really be discussing why most of us don’t realize 140 countries have already recognized Palestine, more than two-thirds of the United Nations’ membership?

Finally the tide is turning against 76 years of injustice.

You guys don't get that it's not just the more recent issues of Northern Ireland. It's about Ireland becoming a republic before that too. The Troubles in Northern Ireland can be compared to Israel and Palestine, and separately the suffering of Ireland as a whole, the forced starvation, etc at the hands of the British can be compared to it also. Ireland had always supported the Palestinians in this conflict.

Ireland and the Irish know very well of what their ancestors went and fought through the horrors of occupation and famine. Palestine, Palestinians and the world will always respect Ireland and the Irish for being on the right side of history 🇵🇸❤️🇮🇪☘️

Ireland is a formerly colonised country who stands in solidarity with other colonised peoples worldwide. We do not and will not ever support a country who occupies another. James, look into the historical links between irelands colonisation and Palestines. Same people. Same crime.

From a Brit: The UK history is filled periods when the UK oppressed the Irish and caused historical untold misery to its close neighbour which led to understandable long standing resentment and regular militant action with death and misery on both sides. It was only through political dialogue and reconciliation that peace was wrought. However please note - at no point throughout the troubles would the UK have considered carpet bombing those districts of our close neighbour that were the source of militant action. I think I can honestly say that the UK is now very fond of and has deep respect for the religious and cultural values of our close neighbour.

The Irish stance is particularly significant. Ireland shares with the Jewish people a history of exile and discrimination. The Irish Free State became a Republic in the same year that Israel was founded. The 6th President of Israel was born in Belfast and grew up in Dublin. The Israelis who fought the British in 1947 drew part of their inspiration from the Irish Freedom struggle of 1921-22. The founder of Zionism, Theodor Herzl, drew inspiration from Irish Patriot Charles Stewart Parnell. Ireland takes its stand that the sovereign freedom of the Israeli people cannot be at the cost of the subjugation and enslavement of the Palestinian people. Hamas is not the problem, no more than the IRA was the problem during the Troubles: it is a symptom of the problem, just as the IRA was a symptom of the problem in Northern Ireland.

Well done to all three of these nations👍👏. It is inevitable, so why doesn’t the British government admit their follies and get on with it.

Slovenia and Malta (two EU Member States) are also recognizing the State of Palestine, Slovenia by mid-June. 💯

I come from India and live on the Island of Ireland. Both India and Ireland were partitioned in the similar way to Palestine. India and Ireland faced forced starvation by the occupying force and I see the forced starvation of Palestinian people by the occupying force, another little colonial project. India recognised Palestine as a sovereign state in 1988, first non-Arab state to do so. India was also a protector of Jewish people. People are being played against each other in the name of the religion. ❤️Ireland, Blessed to be here..

Never paid much attention to Ireland,....a small country that is often overshadowed by its bigger and louder European sisters....Boy, I was wrong to think that “size matters”. Yes, it might be a small country but its people, and their courage to stand on the side of humanity, makes it very BIG, earning itself a place amongst the GIANT world leaders of human rights, teaching other countries (some of which are much, much, larger) how to behave in a civilized world.

Honestly when I was young I could not have imagined a peaceful Ireland and it is truly wonderful but always volatile. I am actually proud of our Irish government and Spain and Norway. The speech by Simon Harris is really worth listening to in full.

The British will never understand the pain they inflicted on my country & why it still resonates. It’s not something we choose to hold on to but that generational trauma is a result of the brutality inflicted on Irish people for merely being Irish. In turn it explains our empathy & solidarity to Palestine & other nations. Our solidarity here is huge, unexplainable, caring for humans shouldn’t need to be explained. We have a pulse & other nations should try find there’s.

For what reason would anybody be against a two state solution,why be against peace,I am Irish and our country is different since the northern Irish agreement,given the people of Palestine the same rights as most people now take for granted,why should anybody be against that,it starts with dialogue not finger pointing,to answer the question we absolutely provide inspiration,.

I reject James’ characterization that both Palestinians and Israelis are dead set on destroying each other. The Palestinian people had a state created on top of them and were violently removed from THEIR LAND 76 years ago and it’s been occupation and oppression ever since. This was and is not an equal struggle when you have an occupied people and the occupier supported by a superpower.

'two parts of the same people' Palestinians and white American jewish people from Brooklyn or Manhattan are not the same. Ireland knows what it is like to be brutalised and occupied by a foreign entity which is what is going on in Palestine.

I have a problem with western power including media and even people like James being theoretical about the severity of the situation. It’s a constant conversation about IF Israel crosses any particular line, often while they have already crossed it. For example Biden speaks of IF Israel invades Rafa with a stern tone while Israel is already there and a million Palestinians have fled the area. James speaks of a potential new Nakba as if it hasn’t already been going on for 6 months. This mode of operations prevents us from discussing the urgent reality of the situation and the core of the problem. False pretenses like “the right to exist” or “defend itself” has for 75 years now been the topic that every discussion begins with, and nobody dares challenge. Can an ethnostate be a democracy? NO. Absolutely out of the question. Does it require violently maintaining an apartheid state? Yes. If Israel wants to exist, it can’t be a carve out because that’s stolen land. It can be a new version of what used to be Palestine but it can’t only have the Star of David in its flag. It would have to include a crescent moon and some extra colors reminding one of a watermelon. I get a bit funny about it because this all seems so glaringly obvious to me as the only possible way forward based on other apartheid regimes in history and the rapid decline of any moral authority in the west as we continue to maintain our last western colony in the Middle East. I have a feeling the plan for western world has always been to postpone the inevitable for as long as the world still runs on oil. And once energy independence is complete, to drop Israel like a bad habit. Besides the Muslim and Arab people being widely propagandized as second class citizens worldwide and especially in this very region, even for the Jews themselves this has been an absolute death trap from the beginning. It’s like a father beating his child to teach him how to survive in the world and the child growing up to be a violent outcast in a society that passed him by. It’s a cycle of abuse we must end as soon as possible.

Yes Ireland does Beacuse Ireland has been there, and indeed we get on very well with our neighbours and our friends and partners in the world, Ireland respects the people of the world Beacuse we are from the people of the world.

Ireland was historically pro-Israel, quite a few of the founding generation of the State of Israel like Chaim Herzog were Irish-born. But we can't stand by and say nothing about Israel's current genocidal imperialism either, having spent hundreds of years on the receiving end ourselves

The original idea for the creation of the state of Israel (as a colony) was not some philanthropic wish to give a group of people a homeland, in the words of the creators 'Britain wanted a Jewish Ulster in Palestine'

Recognition of Palestine is not happening in support of Hamas nor of the attacks of October 7th. It is happening because of Israel's wanton violation of international law in Gaza and the excessive and unnecessary civilian casualties. Israel brought this upon themselves because of the manner in which they chose to wage war. If Israel had followed International Law and not caused such massive civilian casualties this would not be happening. The far right in the Israeli government brought this upon themselves.
