Hello Dr.Ryan, first of all thank you so much for your amazing videos! I have a question, when the buccal cusp of mandibular premolar occludes with the marginal ridge of maxillary premolar, is it on the mesial marginal ridge of second premolar or distal marginal ridge of first premolar? how to figure that out?

hi, could you please write the corresponding acronyms regarding the practice questions: dmr, mmr. i'm guessing df is disto-facial and mf mesio facial right?

Yes, absolutely! MF= mesiofacial DF distofacial MMR= mesial marginal ridge DMR= distal marginal ridge

Thanks for the video I am having probs understanding which cusp tip is df, ml,dL, mmr on the picket fence pls can you help me urgently.

Sure--so all of the upper cusps are lingual because these are the functional cusps for the maxillary arch (the ones in direct contact with the mandibular arch). Going from left to right on the picket fence then, the triangle parts that stick down are DL of third molar, ML of third molar, DL of second molar, ML of second molar and so on. The opposite is true for the lower cusps which are all facial because these are the functional cusps for the mandibular arch. So going from left to right the triangle parts that stick up are DF of third molar, MF of third molar, DF of second molar, MF of second molar, and so on. The depressions between the triangles are either the fossa (if they are in the middle of a tooth) or are marginal ridges (if they coincide with vertical lines that go between the teeth). Hi Dr. Ryan, I am unable to understand this picket fence design. Can you please explain. The question is buccal cusp ridge of the maxillary first premolar on the working side oppose which mandibular structure. I am not getting how to do this at all. Kindly tell. Thank you 🙏

Hi Manisha! The picket fence is designed for questions concerning static occlusion, where the teeth are contacting together and not moving around. As soon as you mention "working side," you are talking about the teeth actively moving and you need something other than the fence to answer that!
