As anger in Canada grows over the deaths of indigenous children at residential schools, a prominent statue of Queen Victoria has been torn down by protesters.
The protesters cheered as the statue at the legislature in Manitoba's capital Winnipeg was toppled on Thursday.
A smaller statue of UK monarch Queen Elizabeth II was also upended nearby.
The toppling came on Canada Day, which marks the country's founding by British colonies.

A well analysis you got there. I totally agree with that in my own perspective Bitcoin's (BTC) price gave up some of its gains after rising nearly 20% after the shakeout low of close to $29,000, although initial resistance is seen around $36,000. The market price now at the mid $30,000 range after a quick plunge below $30,000 support this week. The short lived dip below support finally resulted in a worthwhile bounce, leaving behind a reversal signal that in the past has had god-like results. With the pending orders set to expectation of the hammer reversal pattern that was formed on the weekly chart. For the signal to be valid, Bitcoin would need to be closed the weekly at $34,500 or higher, if crypto bulls can hold at current prices by the time the weekly candle closes, a larger upward move could be on the horizon, my ability to analyze the market and make future predictions was inspired by my mentor and coach Mr. Johnson Williams, his trading strategies have proven 90% accuracy in trading, the current range of bitcoin market I have been able to recover my losses and even grow my trading portfolio massively from 1.7 BTC to 3.5 BTC. My contact with him has changed my perspective of trading under his careful guide and his signal services. His methods are a top-notch and profitable and he can be contacted easily on.WhatsApp but you have to tell him I referred you so he replies your message + 1 . 4 . 1 . 5 . 3. 4 . 0 . 6 . 7. 3 . 5

I'm pretty sure the practices of these schools did change a lot between 1870s & 1990s. 1996 isn't too long ago, there are a lot of students who went to these schools who still around, but we won't be hearing from them about how were they treated in 1996. The last school closed in 1996 but when was the last time that these schools put students' bodies in unmarked graves? Yeah, the residential school system lasted until 1996. Indigenous children between the ages of 4 and 15 were legally required to attend and banned from attending any other schools. Parents who refused had their children forcibly taken from them by the police (they even made tiny handcuffs to fit the youngest children). Parents who resisted were fined or jailed. A total of 150,000 indigenous children were put in the residential schools. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of 2015 estimated 4,000-6,000 deaths, but the chair of TRC has now revised the estimate to at least 20,000 deaths. The purpose of the schools was to eradicate their cultures, or "kill the Indian in the child" as they said.

These are not actually mass graves but rather unmarked graves and unregistered deaths. The families were never told what happened to their children when they did not return and in most cases were told they ran away. The children were taken from their families and forced into residential schools where they were attempting to forcibly assimilate them into Western Culture (i.e Judeo Christian). They were trying to eliminate the culture, heritage, and traditions of the First Nations by force indoctrinating their children one generation at a time which is why the Truth and Reconciliation Commission referred to it as a form of cultural genocide. Here is a direct quote from the report generated by the Royal Commission... "The establishment and operation of residential schools were a central element of this policy, which can best be described as “cultural genocide." Physical genocide is the mass killing of the members of a targeted group, and biological genocide is the destruction of the group’s reproductive capacity. Cultural genocide is the destruction of those structures and practices that allow the group to continue as a group. "

Nothing at all of course. No British monarch has ruled the country since 1721, when the office of Prime Minister was established. The monarch submitted to the rule of Parliament and the Law when Charles I finally got the point, in 1649. Prior to that the absolute rights of the monarch were curtailed severely during King John's reign in 1215. Magna Carta that was called. It is still incorporated into British Law. Canada has been a Dominion since 1867, and is therefore entirely responsible for its own affairs since.

@@nicktecky55 Firstly, the crown represents more than British rule my dude. The crown is divided and represents the Canadian sovereign in its own right. Secondly, there is a little thing called the Indian Act which much of this misery revolves around. To be clear the British were still pulling the strings in Canada well into 1930’s and had a heavy hand on matters relating to Indian policy throughout confederation - it wasn’t until implementation of the Statute of Westminster that self rule was mostly achieved, let’s be honest- how much do you really know about the governing structures of former British colonies? Canada couldn’t really do anything conflicting with what the ‘motherland’ was doing including determine whether to declare war until Westminster was implemented which is WHY Canada was involved in WWI by the stroke of a British pen. That was rather later than your claim we were independent since 1876. The blooming British Governor General refused to dissolve parliament during the King-Byng affair in 1926 and he was constitutionally in his right to do so. We didn’t have Canadian born GG’s until the 1950’s. Canada was not fully and wholly independent of British Parliament until the Canada Act 1982 as stated. Was the Canada Act passed by the Canadian Parliament guaranteeing our charter rights and freedoms? No- it was an act of the British Parliament that granted those rights. When it comes to ‘Indian policy’ Treaties are established in these lands WITH THE CROWN represented in the person of the monarch. Do you understand the Queen is now independently the sovereign of Canada ? The crown is divided, no longer indivisible. Treaties have not been honoured, there has been terrible injustice, unceded territory cleared by intentional destruction of native populations and this does reflect on the sovereign as treaties of peace & friendship were upheld in the name of the crown. From Victoria through to Elizabeth, both were signatories to historic acts of governance in these lands- acts used to justify destruction of First Nations people. There was a detailed 7 year inquiry done in 2008-2015 by the Canadian government looking into these schools and the treatment of the indigenous, which ruled that the deaths of these people were classed as 'ethnic cleansing' and looked at restitution. All of this is public record, it's just no one thought to check...

I understand what you are saying but here's a brief exercise: Think of yourself at 5 and think of everything from that age until now, your current self. Do you think that none of those previous years influenced the person you have come to be? Should you forget all of those events, influences, etc., even if there were positives? You might think it is stupid and senseless but that past is still a very real present.

Educate yourself. The last residential school in Canada closed in 1996. People alive today went to residential schools across the country and are STILL living with the trauma. Intergenerational trauma is a massive issue TODAY, all from the result of the residential schools, forced reserves, racism, 60s scoop, etc. Racist policies and systems affect Indigenous people in Canada TODAY. If you want to change the present to create a better future, learn about the 'past' so you can actually help TODAY instead of commenting cluelessly.

The schools were first introduced by the first Canadian Prime Minister, the one that in 2001 the canadian government awarded a day of celebration for, the one that appears on the canadian $10 note, the one who's grave is a national historic site of Canada, the one with honorary degrees from Kingston and Toronto Universities. The schools were expanded and made compulsory by second Canadian Prime minister Alex Mackenzie. An unveiling ceremony of his portrait was attended by Paul Hellyer in 1967. The conditions in the schools were a result of the Indian act, an act passed by the canadian government under leadership of Mackenzie Bowell. The trend runs through, it was Canadians in the Canadian Parliament who are responsible for these actions. Not the Queen, nor Queen Victoria. Canadians need to stop deflecting the blame for their horrific past onto the Monarchy and the British people who took no part in their genocides. How can we be responsible, when we live on the other side of the world?
