"I speak Denmark so good" It's funny that Americans don't realize the influence Danish/Old Norse has had on the English language. The word 'England' literally comes from 'Angleland' (land of the Angles). The Angles (southern Denmark), together with Jutes (northern Denmark) and Saxons (northern Germany) were the ones who founded England. A few hundred years later, during the Viking Age, Anglo-Saxon England was raided, invaded, and eventually taken over and ruled by Danish vikings. Harold Bluetooth's son, Sweyn Forkbeard, became the first viking king of England. His son, Canute the Great, was king of the North Sea Empire (Denmark, Norway, England) for decades until his death. Territory under Danish rule was known as 'Danelov', meaning 'law of the Danes'. During the Viking Age, vikings would often get paid by their would-be victims not to raid/kiII them. This tax was called 'Danegeld' (Dane money). One such Danegeld was paid by Paris, not only with money, but with land. The land would be known as Normandy. The Normans, descendants of Danish vikings, would go on to invade England during the Norman Conquest, led by William the Conqueror, and permanently rule the country. Aaaanyway, that's why a lot of English words are actually remarkably similar to Danish ones. For example: toe = tå heel = hæl foot = fod knee = knæ navel = navle shoulder = skulder arm = arm elbow = albue hand = hånd knuckle = kno finger = finger nail = negl neck = nakke mouth = mund lip = læbe tongue = tunge tooth = tand nose = næse ear = øre eye = øje hair = hår sword = sværd knife = kniv hammer = hammer axe = økse spear = spyd shield = skjold helmet = hjelm ...and many more.

Even German, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, French its all just a soup of words and expressions which have evolved from essentially the same place, but very independently. Causing similar but also very different languages to form from it.

It's even more noticeable in the northern dialects of English, such as in Yorkshire. Rygg (or Rigg) = A spur of mountain or hill. Force = Waterfall Beck = A brook or stream Garth = a grassy area in an enclosed space. Dales = Valleys The Danish influence was still pronounced among the Normans, especially because of the influence of Gunnora. (My people were the de Paganels of Moutiers-Hubert .)

"Stauning eller kaos"

And for those who don't understand: literally it means "Stauning or chaos". This was the election slogan of a left wing Danish policitian (who had the same surname as the small town where the whisky is from) in the years between WW1 and WW2.

I would love to see a tribe video showcasing whiskeys from non-traditional locations. Examples include Stauning, M&H, Abasolo, and others.

In 2021 my local whiskey society managed to get some GND pot still from a bonder that was finished in Stauning "heather peated" madeira casks. Beautiful stuff.

Entertaining as usual. Loved the letter Rex read about the elderly gentleman drinking cheap whiskey. Good for him. I can only hope to be 90 and still drinking whiskey. Cheap, or otherwise. Cheers fellas.

Further to Rex's comment on the name Stauning. Thorvald Stauning was one of the most significant Danish Prime Ministers, governing 1924-26 and 1929-42. It's a name that will resonate with most Danes.

Thorvald has nothing to do with the town... post-it stamp... of Stauning where the whiskey is made. Stauning today is barely a village of 400 residents, Thorvald was born over a hundred years ago in Copenhagen... 300km+ and two islands apart.

Got and old bottle of Stauning I wanted to open but then realized it sold for 20 times as much as I got it for, and in this economy I think I'd regret opening it. Visit the distillery, very beautiful.

Ordered a bottle of the Stauning Smoke off the back of this. Having visited both Islay and Denmark, a smokey Danish whiskey makes a lot of sense.

My father's favorite place to drink and whisky was the local VFW hall and the whisky was Kessler's. And he drank it with a short beer chaser.

Stauning was the Danish Minister Of State (our “Prime Minister”) in the 1930’s and early 40’s. He was known to drink heavily, smoke many cigars, visit prostitutes, and had a VERY public affair. In spite of this, he was re-elected multiple times, until the German occupation disbanded the government in 1942. He is today thought to be one of the most influential, and successful Heads Of Government in Danish history. He campaigned on the slogan: “Stauning, or chaos!” The quintessential release from Stauning Distillery is therefore called Kaos. I know no one asked, but this guy was the Danish Theodore Roosevelt and has to be talked about on occasion

Took me a while to figure out that the two whiskey's names was "Smoke" and the other "Floor Malted". They really don't distinguish the two names to the bottles, nor does the title of the video help...

Would be amazing in gin, maybe rye and other earthy whiskeys. But nothing in the bourbons would go good in it.

Stauning is the name of the city they are located at, but more importantly it's the name of a past Danish socialist politicians that had an election slogan which was "Stauning eller kaos" translate too Stauning or chaos. Very recognized name in Denmark and his election posters have become something alot of people have in their home. Which is why the core range is called kaos. I got a bottle from them which is their discontinued heater Smoked. If you let us donate again I might send it.

Curious, Denmark distillery using locally sourced peat. Are any US distilleries using US peat? I see Florida is the leader in production but also shows Illinois, Maine, Michigan, and Minnesota.

Had a thought when Daniel mentioned smoke. What if: you take a new make, put it in a large storage container, pressurize it with an industry smoke gun, give the container a couple turns to lightly mix in the smoke and finally barrel it. Kind of like making smoked water. Is this as terrible of an idea as I'm sure it is?

Question/idea I don’t have the technical vocabulary to impart this concept properly but hopefully you get the idea. If you use a smaller barrel like a Daniel sized one to age your whiskey, rapidly to impart whatever flavors that gives you. Logically wouldn’t using a gigantic ReX size barrel in the hot climate of Texas. Wouldn’t that Solve the problem of the heat causing barrels to I don’t know over steep I guess. If anybody will understand my question, it would be you Daniel if you would please, rephrase it with the proper terminology, I would appreciate it for my edification.

Stauning is the name of the village the distillery is near. Stauning is also the name of a (locally) famous wartime SocDem prime minister who's policies hindered extremism which has obviously na issue throughout Europe, his policies during the occupation also lead to the Germans being more lenient so Denmark got to keep more power than most occupied countries during wwii
