I lived in Staunton for eight years and loved it. Gypsy Hill Park is one of a kind. I highly recommend seeing that when you visit the area.

Staunton is such a beautiful place in the Shenandoahs, I'm from southeast Virginia but my sister studies at Mary Baldwin University, which is basically the heart of the city, in fact the Wilson Library is just outside the grounds of the school. It's got that small city hospitality with a mountain twist.

If you get out of the city of Staunton, and travel the back roads, I have to say that it is a beautiful area; however, you are not going to find that in Staunton proper. You can see the mountains more in Waynesboro than in Staunton. In Staunton, there is no view.

Slavery IS a part of history and yes many families in Augusta County had slaves. Why omit slavery from history? It was a way of life THEN, and its NOT now. People need to stop trying to rewrite or hide history. bad or good. History is just that....history

Using the term "unwilling captives" made me cringe. I also paused and considered not finishing the video. If the goal was to be politically correct by not using the correct term of slavery, the contrary was accomplished. Beautiful town, but its history should not be sanitized.

Funny you should mention that. The idea was to elude to our short attention spans and that places will surprise you when you least expect it. I do not believe I executed that very well! It has always bothered me a little. The fact is, I think Staunton is a very cool town. Lord knows I wish I’d said it better! (Sigh)

Staunton might have been a nice place in 2015, but now, in 2023, it surely is not. It has changed drastically. Staunton no longer has that small town charm. Fast food places galore! lining the roads. Small strip malls and shops that have been vacated and abandoned are an eyesore. The traffic, for a small town, has become horrible. There is a realtor here in Staunton who has erected signs all over attempting to sell every piece of wooded ground there is in order to build another facility. The beauty of wooded areas is no longer. Do we need 10+ hotels in Staunton??? We have several tire places and auto parts stores and car washes wtihin minutes of each other. In a few years, their businesses will go down the tubes and those buildings will remain empty and become eyesores. Crime has also risen. It once was a beautiful town in which to live -- no longer. Very sad.

i grew up in dallas texas and now a proud resident of staunton va i’ve moved a couple times and never have i felt so at home. The historic architecture of downtown and the site seeing you can see from the top of the railroad bridge, the authentic shakespearean theatre, the people, the food- best place i’ve lived by FAR. I’ve always wanted to visit Europe and living here feels like the perfect balance. Genuinely does not feel like you’re in America when you’re walking around downtown, guess that’s why they have the harry potter festivals here.

Home of Jedidiah Hotchkiss , Map maker for Robert e Lee and Stonewall Jackson. My great grandfather who's buried there, he's featured in the frontier museum. Maps are in the Smithsonian. Home of the Dejarnette Center, a mental hospital I worked at, now known as the most haunted place in Virginia. Also Western State mental hospital. There are very nice creative people there. The Findells, glassblowers, artists.. My wife was a chef at McCormick's.

You need to live here to know what it is really like. This guy mentions facts that were applicable back in 2015. This is 2023 and Staunton changed drastically and for the worse. The beauty that was once here is no longer.
@1dgorgo
@1dgorgo 7 месяцев назад
Don't let the video fool you. Staunton has drastically changed. Traffic, fast food places galore, vacant/abandoned store fronts, car washes and tire places on almost every road (don't know why we need so may of those. Since there are so many, in a few years, they will go out of business and the properties will remain vacant and abandoned. There is a realtor here in Staunton who has a listing on any property that has nothing on it. Trees are being torn down so this guy can sell the properties to put up more fast food places. As far as the downtown area, it is historic, and quaint, but there are many businesses that have closed since COVID. Many vacant stores.
