Nothing wrong with presets. I use them in many ways for many reasons. Sure, if your preset transforms a photo beyond reality than people may complain, but is an artist not entitled to their own interpretation and ideas? I doubt that there is one photographer including Alan who doesn’t use a preset to some degree. The monochromatic camera does not make super contrasty images OOC. He would be using a preset to knock the contrast up on his photos. I am a Leica owner and don’t see the need to excessive purity.

I love the D500 too to shoot fast... sports, birds. I sold my d810 and picked up a perfect original Leica Monochrom after experimenting w the M8 shooting color to b/w transfers and M6 black and white film. Never looked back.

You can set the minimum shutter speed in the settings. So, the camera will use at least 1/250 at automatic shutter speed and will change the ISO value to the maximum value you've set in the settings when on Auto ISO. If you have reached the maximum ISO value it will slow down the shutter speed.

BankFodder The maximum shutter speed is telling you, that the camera tries to shoot at least at your given shutter speed or above. So, if lightning is bad it will still trying to shoot at 1/250 by any means. If it‘s getting worse, it will bump up the ISO. So, the maximum shutter speed is the minimum value the camera goes until it will increase the ISO. 🙂

NOW is the Time! , Alan mentioned that there is a difference, to him and his work! The comment is near the end of minute 10.

I think he just exposed for the lights and crushed the shadows (with a bit of editing, I guess). Just look at the direction of the light and you'll see that is coming from top/behind the girl. The shadow is probably a building blocking the sunlight.

He just said minutes later that the shot was underexposed and he boosted the foreground.

@@diegobouhot Thanks. You're probably right. There's definitely a lot of selective editing. I think he may even run it through Silver Efex Pro as I've seen similar results with some shots I've taken on a Monochrom.

I shoot film and digital and love both mediums but nothing is forever not even negatives. How many people have lost negatives in a fire? For digital it‘s best to keep multiple copies across different hard drives and a copy on online servers. You can also print your photos and keep those in an archive room. We dont live in the early 2000‘s, we live in 2020, almost 2021.(nobody uses floppy disks anymore,...) Technology is so advanced and cheap that everyone who can afford a computer, a smartphone and a camera can definitely afford an external SSD drive. Archiving digital files takes a bit more work but it‘s still manageable if done correctly every year.

@@Mindartcreativity Thank you for your response. It is indeed a bit more work to keep the digtal files save, and I think we are willing to do that work, but maybe that's not the case for most people. A few decades ago when film was still used most people didn't care that much about preservation. They shot a roll, had it developed and let the company made prints. The prints were looked at and the negatives were kept in the envelope they came in. Probably in the same box the others were in. They didn't had to look after the negatives ever again only when they needed another print or a family member wanted an extra print. The so to say safekeeping was mostly done for them. Late 90's early 2000's you even had those deals were you got two prints for the price of one. The prints are perfect for preservation as are the negatives. The thing with digital is that the normal consumer tends to shoot even more. Images are not instant and don't need to be developed. The option of printing is not offered but needs to be requested, which is another hurdle to take. And why should they print? The image is directly send to a family member by phone or uploaded on social media with some added text or emoticons. They will never store their images on a external hard drive like was done for them in the films day's by dropping the negatives in the box with other negatives. Two preservation techniques that were already there when a consumer would let the company develop the film. I myself shoot digital and film. My archiving is good but even I find it difficult to archive the digital files well for preservation. The best way is to store the original a Tiff and jpeg file I guess of one image. Changing the name affects it and it is probably best to keep it simple and no spaces like: 20201014_01 2020 october 14th and the first image. Or you could lose the first two numbers of the year and just go with 20. Saving it to your external hard drive would be best. Not changing anything on that exteral hard drive and keep it for just adding images, no deleting. I feel that this works the best but maybe you have some extra advice regarding the digital work flow? Pardon for the long reply but I really appreciate your, or anyone's, thoughts on the subject

Print it out. Have a paper copy of the photo. Not all the photos You will have to be selective which ones to print. Just print out the worthy ones and archive the rest electronically. That’s my solution to the problem.

With that much heavy editing you can do it with pretty much any camera that you are comfortable with.

cyrfung you have to get the shot before you can edit it and doubt you can get photographs as good as Alan’s.

A sensor without a color array captures a much higher level of detail and shades of gray so duplicating the output of a Leica Monochrome camera would be very difficult. Plus shooting with a Leica is such an unique experience. That said an iPhone 11 Pro with its three primes and one's favorite editing apps could come close if your final output isn't print. Close but not the same.

@@thomasjames7644 I doubt not. It is just a matter of practice and keeping with it. The keepers are shown, the turds are not. I also feel he is very heavy on the editing. Much more respect to Bresson who had principles and was a true master of the craft. Letting the camera meter for you is a big thing. It works so differenyly when you meter with your eyes, when you ISO is set in your camera, when you focus manually and when sharpness is not unrealistic like many images today. These images really look like digital images. It's not the best of looks
