Matsumoto-san will show the entire video he took of the tsunami when you visit his hotel. He kindly allowed me to use a part of it at the end of this video. To see the rest, consider visiting! I wasn't paid to make this video. I just really like the ryokan, and Matsumoto-san kindly let me stay one night for free in order to do the filming. (I usually stay here while I'm working, so I hadn't been able to film before.)

Thank you for sharing information about this beautiful hotel! Ah, those meals! But the memory of the tsunami - still harrowing to contemplate. What courage and commitment it takes to rebuild after such devastation.

The beauty of this place is absolutely stunning! I know it must be amazing on a sunny day but, as far as I'm concerned, drinking coffee on that massage chair while gazing out onto the mistbound coast seems equally heavenly. You're so lucky! I'm going to travel there as soon as I get the chance.

😍such a gorgeous place to stay! I absolutely love the trees along that coastline - you mentioned how the food was art (that dessert looked really delicious and presented so beautifully I have to say) but those trees are art too. I remember seeing footage of the tsunami's effects along that coastline and it was so devastating to see, so it makes me so happy to see how things have recovered and how people have built new lives like Matsumoto-san has done. That bath in your room!! I could spend hours in there enjoying the view! That alone would be worth the price of the room!

I think I prefer the misty view more. Unfortunately, I am unable to travel right now. The only place I can go is into my Minecraft world, but this video has given me some great ideas for that. 😄

What a great video and gorgeous location! Thank you! I'm slowly gathering ideas for my husband and I's 7 year anniversary in the fall of 2025. We're hoping to visit again then. We went to Tokyo for our honeymoon in 2018 and it was absolutely amazing. I haven't stopped thinking about Japan since. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through your videos!

May be I have a tip for you the Ryokan Machiya Inn in Omihachiman. There you're able to bath in an old sake barrel. The ryokan is an old sake brewery that's the reason for the distinct bath. It's quite traditional and 2017 about 11 000 yen so a bit more expensive than a business hotel but the experience is worth it. By the way there is a ramen shop on the right side of the Oklahoman train station that has live changing tonkotsu ramen with kimchi as topping that cuts through the deep pork broth flavour perfectly. You don't need to go to ichiban ramen the local shops blow you away especially this one.

I often used to wonder what this ryokan was like inside but out of my budget, given I'm someone who travels around Japan sleeping in the back of my mini van that gives you an idea of my budget. Anyway -- fantastic video and glad you highlighted this coastline. Taro is incredibly special to me, I worked at the elementary and junior high school here, and it was a quite profound time, it was after the earthquake and tsunami that essentially destroyed the town, and the schools showed many mementoes and memories of the tragedy. I sometimes watched school plays of the kids recounting their memories of the day itself....and I often used to come up to the Sanouiwa after work and sit watching the ocean contemplating....I miss it dearly now I am down in Mie; but it's a special place to me. In fact Taro directly inspired my manga, Future Saviors. But that's another story. Thanks as always for your wonderful videos, I really enjoy seeing Iwate and Touhoku stuff now I am some distance away :)

Oh you lived right there! It was definitely intense there right after the tsunami. I remember visiting Taro about 2 weeks after the tsunami when it was still solid rubble in every direction...

@@GoNorthJapan Yeah, I was thankfully not there during the tsunami, I'm not sure how I would live life having had that occur in my life, which is why I stand in awe and respect for every survivor. Even though my time in Taro came 8 years on from the tsunami, I will never ever stop being grateful for my time there.

Yeah- since it's right on the MCT Trail you can hike from there north or south for more stunning views!

Yeah, I think a lot of people visiting Japan prefer the private ones, though they are usually only available at more expensive places.
