It's always advisable, if you're going to steal something musical, to steal it from the best!
We're breaking down an incredible Micheal Brecker solo from the early 2000's when he had the "Special Quartet" with Pat Metheny, Bill Stewart, and Larry Goldings.
I go into depth about how I listen, transcribe, notate, and ultimately take ideas from masters like Mike and integrate them into my own playing.

Thank you for sharing Brecker. I remember seeing him as a young man and was blown away. His legacy and impact is still permeating today. Blessings!

There's a lot of really good stuff in here that I can't wait to get worked into my vocabulary! Thanks for putting this together Janek!

Thanks for digging out that 3-note melodic cell descending in whole tones! 👏Very cool sound, indeed; that is going straight into tonight's gig! ✌

Cool to see how you approach transcribing and your insights. The points about using treble clef make a lot of sense, too. Thanks for sharing!

Janek, a great lesson on using what you hear to expand your vocabulary. I guess trust your ear to see where it takes you and correct as needed. Would love to hear your opinion on Yuki Atori that transcribes in depth Hadrian Feraud playing. That is probably not what you are advising. Though, he has amassed a huge vocabulary just like Hadrien. Thanks

I think it's a colossal waste of time transcribing other bass players who are soloists. You learn old vocabulary, second hand, and through the eyes and ears of someone who plays the same instrument as you. Far better not to handicap yourself right away by sounding exactly like another bass player.

So right about soloists implying a 5 to 1 sounding out at first. Noticed that too. Great example is cannonball adderly blowing over the start of Next Time I see You on the album Live Session! (Such a great album!). He plays this arpeggio which is basically a 5 of the 5 but it sounds so hip. 🤓

Really love seeing your approach to integrating bits of a solo into your vocabulary. Which live show was that? I’ve got lots of live recordings of that group but I don’t recognize that solo.

Good artists copy. Great artists steal. The best artists are on the sharp end. #sharpendgang
