My stay was more of an experiment to see if I could get away with it. At the time, I was making stealth videos, and I thought staying over night in a storage unit was pretty stealthy. I only stayed ONE night!!!

@@OutonaLimbwithKym Very interesting. I travel into a fairly large city to work 3 nights a week in a hospital, and have thought about maybe renting a storage facility to see if I could crash there for 5-6 hours a day to save cash. Paying for hotels sucks.

@@ericg9092 Totally agree! It's very difficult to get away with it, but a few days a week may actually work. You could actually rent one of the bigger ones and pull your car right into it. Sleep in your vehicle and use Planet Fitness for showers. Sheesh! I have a bed, kitchen, bathroom, fridge, and office in my SUV.

Don't try it I own storage sheds and your stuff will be comficated and you will face jail time. We overlook unlocked units at night. I know some people try it but not worth running a chance of being overlooked. You might have to spend a few days in there before being let out.

@@OutonaLimbwithKym The thing of it is, the fireworks were not being illegally stored, it was simply not against local code nor policy, it was a "legal" fire if you will.

What does a customer whom stored their fireworks in a storage facility have to someone choosing shelter over sleeping under a bridge or on a sidewalk?

This storage facility has no gate. And there are way too many units for one person to check. Even though I was scared, he would do a walk by. This is not a regular thing. I only stayed one night.

I only stayed one night, and I took my laptop and my Jackery 1000 with me for power. I watched a Netflix show that I had downloaded onto my laptop before I got there. I do know people do stay in them. Mostly during a transition while they are trying to find a place. This storage unit belongs to my son. And don't even get me started on affordable housing!!! 😡 (I want a van, but I'm doing just fine in an SUV. You can, too.)

Ive never seen one with electricity. The units don't have lights

Most people don't care. I guess the liability scares investors off. And they want a profit. It's a shame there can't be a government program that turns closed malls into little homeless villages.

That would be a community in itself. My Apt bldg is a converted hospital. It has a chapel and a laundromat. If we had an urgent care and a grocery store, I'd never have to leave.

I went in with my mother. We had to enter the code. She left. I didn't. And then in the morning, she came back and came in to get me. It worked out. And yeah, it's not easy anymore!!! I was only there one night!!!!

Yeah. Same here. Cameras and Codes. I even thought about renting office space. I found one. I decided not to live a lie. It's easier for me in my vehicle. ✌️❤️ ~ 🦋

It was probably a rat. Nah. Yeah, it was pretty cool. I'm surprised at how clean those places are. I thought it would dusty. You know me, just trying to stealth my way through the state.

@@vatriciar2175 No. I just looked around really well and made sure no critters were lurking. The whole place was clean - stairs, elevator, walls, glass . . . very impressed.

That would all depend on how long you want to stay inside. I was only in there one night, just one. It was my son's storage unit and I was doing a bunch of stealth videos at the time and just wanted to see what it was like. I was not concerned. Only thing that worried me was spiders. 911 still works inside.

Try it in my storage sheds and your stuff will be confiscated and you will be off to jail.

Sorry for the late reply. I am so behind in replying!!!! I think the noise was probably the air vent. The door was completely down while I slept and the lock was unlocked. I knew if I went in closer to quitting time, I'd be okay.

Have you looked into HOWA (Homes on Wheels Alliance). The trick to the storage unit is to make sure you're inside before closing time. Once the place closes down, no one will come in until it opens the next day. So make sure you don't rent one that is open 24 hrs. Good luck to you!!!!!

Cameras are only at the entrances to the hallways. No cameras in the actual hallway or inside. My storage unit days are over though. There are better options out there for me, if need be.

You make the outside lock magnetized, to look like it's locked when it isn't. You bungee cord yourself inside, so if anyone chks, it appears locked because you have it secured from the inside.

My son rented it for his extra stuff. And then I got the idea of staying in it ONE night. I'm always hearing about people living in them. I wanted to see how easy it could be. I was already inside, and then my mom left me there and returned the next day. 🙃

There was no lock. I didn't have it on. I had someone drop me off. We pretended to put things in the storage unit. Then my mom left me. She's picked me up in the morning. We agreed on a set time. Thing is, I was unaware that the storage manager made rounds. He apparently saw my lock off. A few days later, when I went to put my lock on, it wouldn't work. He had put another on. Thank God I wasn't in it!!!! He mailed the key to me. I had to wait a few days. No more storage unit overnighters.

You bend over and pull on the lever and it comes up just like a garage door. I was able to pull the inside lever down to close it once I was inside. I didn't have my lock on it, obviously. I kept it inside with me. I did worry that the manager may make rounds and see that my lock wasn't on and maybe he would put one on, but it's a small business, so he didn't make any rounds!

Only one worker and he was in the office. I stayed behind and my mom closed the door and she walked out and left the building driving the car. She returned the next day and walked to my storage unit and I got my things and just walked out with her. Nothing was ever said. (only did that once, not going to make it a habit.)

Don't try this it is totally illegal and you might get locked in. I own storage sheds and don't try this in my units. You will regret it.

Well, I can tell you one thing - I won't do it again. Just once for me and that was only for a video. Where I was, I didn't set anything off. My row was dark, but the main rows were lit. Not sure if I'm the one who kept them lit or now. LOL

I was worried about snoring, too. I slept for about 5 hours straight with no interruptions, so who knows if my snoring was caught on audio via the security. 1st month was half price, but monthly rate/insurance/taxes it comes to $107 per month. It belongs to my son. (I didn't see one bug or spider!!!)

Cameras were on the end hallways, not in sight of me. I went in b4 dark. I was being quiet just in case the manager was making rounds and in case someone else was doing the same thing I was. You can definitely get away with it, if planned. But one mess up and you can get caught. I only stayed ONE night.

I was actually very comfortable. Weirded out a little with no cell service, though. I knew where the emergency stairs were located. Felt very safe.

I used old paper that had math on the other side and it went in the recycling bin. I wish someone would come up with a place like this for the homeless!!!

Yes, they do. They are all on the entrances to the hallways, not directly in the hallways. Once I was in, I didn't come out until the next day. There are no cameras inside the units. No security walking around. Just one person was manning the building and he left at 8pm. And it was just for one night!!

@@OutonaLimbwithKym I know there are no cameras in the units. The cameras in the entrances to the hallways do record the hallways too, not just the corners 😉. They would also record you not leaving at night or leaving in the morning. Yes, usually they probably don't look at the cameras unless something happens that warrant doing so. But I'd be too nervous to try it LOL. When I worked at a local YMCA there was one employee that loved to check out the recordings. Oh the things she saw people do 😖. Enjoying your videos Kym. There were, but once I turned down the aisles - there were no cameras. And once I was in, I never left the unit until my ride picked me up the next day.

The storage unit was located near a hallway entrance, so the main hallway was lit up. I really thought I'd be in complete darkness. I like to sleep in the dark, too. I don't even like to look over and see the light on my computer mouse lit up at night. LOL - thanks for watching, my friend!

@@OutonaLimbwithKym ah I am exactly the same. Kim says I am weird but when we stay in hotels etc. I take batteries out if clocks as I don’t like them ticking. I hang things in little lights in switches even light through the spy hole in the room doors I cover up. Gotta be dark and quiet. 🤷🏻‍♂️.

@@OutonaLimbwithKym Hi , I did same thing when I moved out of my hometown to London,my camping lasted for 8 months, you are really lucky that it was lit, most storages have light down after few minutes and then if you use your phone or watch a movie it will be visable above your storage, or if someone comes in and you move the light comes on, it was a real nightmare, not to mention when people come in and sort something in their storage right next to you for HOUUURs and you need a pee and cant get out, those memories are a real nightmare, does your storage unit have electricity inside the cabin? Ive only had electricity outside on a corridior, i had to charge my powerbank there and then i charged my phone from the powerbanks, no one ever stole them but it was so nerve wrecking, I would never think of making videos about that it would simply give my location away in a big city like london which would lead me to being found, in the end the management noticed me and found me anyway and I simply moved to a hostel - back when the hostels were quite cheap, now they are quite expensive per night so must be really hard for people who are evicted or nowhere to stay. It's not that it appeals to me. I use it as a backup. My choice for night camping is at Cracker Barrel, Pilot J and Love's Truck Stop. Those are my choices while traveling. Unfortunately, sometimes those are not available. So I try out different places that as long as your stealth, you shouldn't be bothered. The storage unit was kind of a last minute thing, because my son rented a unit and I thought I'd give it a try.

Lived in an indoor storage unit for six months. Lived in outdoor storage unit for about two-and-a-half years prior to that one. Had an apartment between those for 2+ years.

My apologies, I didn't know it was for just one night. I saw a guy do a similar video and him and his girlfriend were put out because all the attention he brought on themselves.

Never know when someone could be homeless. I need to keep my options open! lol
