When pawpaw and meemaw in the Winnebago start getting arrested for stealth camping then hopefully these atrocious laws will change. Great video to bring awareness to this ruling. Thank you.
ACTUALLY being stealth will be more important than ever before. Also, moving more often will be vital. I have to say, neighborhoods generally have watches and people with money, so cops are more often to patrol those. Also ring cameras are everywhere in suburbs/neighborhoods with motion detection so they are VERY problematic. A busy downtown people are coming and going 24/7 so a random car in an alley is NORMAL and police are not going to notice you. That has been my experience. Your advice to lookup local laws is golden! You are ABSOLUTELY correct about BLM getting shut down the more hordes of people descend on them.
thank you for sharing this Alana! this is so important and the way the economy is going, stealth car camping is getting almost impossible! Also thank you for mentioning LNT ethics and how to keep BLM lands and camping spots clean and safe. I would hate to pay for camping spots every time I want to find a place to sleep. that starts to rack up and then that defeats the purpose of this life style in the first place. thank you !!
The National Vehicle Residency Collective just posted youtube recordings of the recent summit (channel under same name). I'm grateful there are so many amazing people fighting for vehicle residency rights. Alauna, you'd be wonderful on their panel next year if you're interested.
Good info! I also live in a very nice area in Atlanta GA. Every other day I venture on foot outside my subdivision to pick up trash. I collect on average 3 tall kitchen trash bags within a 2 mile radius. The amount of trash I see everywhere is at an all time high, almost demonic feeling. And don’t get me started on what I see on the trails when hiking 😢
Beloit, WI was kind to me. Slept in the City Hall/PD/Stadium parking lot & they were not only kind regarding me being there? They left me alone. I woke up to Beloit’s finest getting ready to do their job while I was getting ready to go to work. I’m grateful it hasn’t affected me yet. I went to McDonalds on my way to work though? And there were 💯 minimum 6-8 ACTUAL unhoused people looking for help. It was so 💔. A vehicle is private property technically so these laws are ridiculous!!! VERY CURIOUS? Have you tried some smaller hospitals/ 24 hr immediate care? I’d never hit a private neighborhood around here. Industrial parks are quiet at night
Isn't it ironic that our great country was started by wandering , curious, exploring types , in a covered wagon. Flash forward, it's becoming apparent that this country wants people cattled into specific places. No wandering allowed. Why do you think this is? You must be counted. Who does that remind you of???? Frightening isn't it!
Another option for parking in a city is hospital/nursing home parking lots, some place that is staffed 24/7 so it wouldn't be unusual for cars to be there overnight. Especially true with a large ER facility where folks are coming and going at all hours of the night.
I've been finding that smaller cities who don't have their own police but use county sheriffs are pretty lax on van life / car campers and have less parking restrictions as well. for example, no street sweeping limits and no parking restrictions in city lots. Of course check out everything yourself.
Speaking of trash... businesses (truck stops incl.) MAY decide it's becoming a loss for them to handle so much from the increase in travelers & nomads. Well informed presentation of the situation. I'm off the road currently, but hope to return someday before I can't - either from health or laws. iOverlander can be hit or miss - I've used it a lot.
wow. thank you for using your platform for good, people respect you and this info is important. also horrifying. where are humans supposed to sleep when all the best options have run out? we are animals too. able to live respectfully, moving regularly, in the forest at least!
I got a trash picker because in my first couple weeks I was seeing some horrible littering, whether it was from people staying overnight or not, it was just bothering me. leave a place cleaner than you found it and we wouldn't have so little freedom with these things :/ if we were a net benefit to everyone involved we would have people riding for us to be able to stay but it's obviously an annoyance or just a neutral negligible thing often enough that nobody cares. and would rather people not.
Awesome! I've lived in my SUV for 2+ years and haven't had a problem. Of course I'm stealthy. I see un-syealthy campers get busted quite often right in front of me. Stop putting reflective material in your windows! Duh!!!
I totally agree you should always leave a place better then you it was. I think people should be more aware of leaving their trash all over. That is a big.. big pet peeve.of mine 😊
Very good information and advice.i stumbled on your channel.i live in apt but great advice.. amd i love your advice on littering.. hey get a bag and clean it up.. 👍
I’ve been nomad for over three years and I have one word of advice. Stop sleeping in cities. IOverlander wasn’t designed for stealth camping in your car or van in cities. It’s in the name.. overlander. Go to the desert, forests, or mountains. Put some all terrain tires on your vehicle to deal with harsher terrain and go deep.
I live in an apartment pretty cole to a highway. I can assure you this summer a couple rolled in our parking lot looking like they hadn't bathed in years. Got out of their vehicle and started living in our parking lot. Pulled out chairs and just made their self's at home. It was really strange. A lot of elderly live here for the most part its quiet. Don't do like these people. I do van life quiet often. I would never be so out there like that. I think the police got called on them and they were told to move on
I'm just going to jump ahead a little and ask the following... Is it a crime to sleep in an area if you're not paying or contributing to property taxes?
In sacramento ca. Truckstops are by permission only. I tried the answer is "no" and clear thier parking lots every through out the night with sirens horns and a security loud speaker with flashing lights. Dont bother.😢
Where is the best site to look on for info about whether or not a town or city has an ordinance or law about car sleeping ? I was in a town that absolutely has the ordinance and enforce it, but when I went searching for info I didnt see one writing about the towns laws about sleeping in a vehicle.
