Practical advice, well presented. I live near a tourist camping area in the mountains so practice by slipping around the various camp sites. It's not quite the same as having someone actively trying to find me but still good experience. I see and hear all kinds of things I'm not meant to. And only once made my presence known, on purpose to stop someone who was behaving badly with evil intent. Then faded into the shadows as more campers came to see what the commotion was. Don't want the attention of being a local hero, prefer my quiet life.

Tales of a backwoods poacher. Love it! Not only do all the people in the area hear those “Cool Truck” boys, all the game animals hear it too.

My long time hunting buddy would always say “We ain’t doin nothin illegal but we’re gonna hunt like we are”.

Very good point Blackie, never heard any hunter talking about the importance of a silent vehicle. Strange because it makes total sense.

excellent points. My father would get on me and my brother about being "noisy". Listening to the noises from birds, many will go quiet while others will raise Cain when an invader enters their territory.

I was actually contemplating this not to long ago. I bought a new to me truck. It's not excessively loud but the thought crossed my mind I wouldn't want to pull into the woods with this. I would have never thought about a Cadillac muffler, but the muffler is what I was wanting to quiet.

If we hunt naked and oiled and barefoot , we move slow due to bare feet , we feel all underfoot , you can feel as you put weight down before a breakage , naked torso would not make a sound on the brush ! And how we are so unaccustomed to our roots , think native traditions, hunters n bows , and animal blubber , fats , n veg oil , we blend to each hunting patch , wearing furns , daub in mud clay n such ! We spend thousands on equipment! your so right ! We’re too accustomed to the mall or supermarkets, I’m born n bred in England! We’ve lost our traditions of man ! Hunter gatherers! Having said that it’s bloody cold in winter and hunting in ways conveyed into dam sure , an indecent exposure law would cm into effect ! Oh my !!!! Love ya content mon Senior .

Sound, scent, and movement. Good information, we can always learn more.. I didn't have real mentors when I got into deer hunting in the early 90's, local hunters were often good shots and lived here for 50 years. They smoked, some knew how to walk quietly though the woods. I read a Tom Brown's Field Guide to Nature Observation and Tracking, Primitive Archer, Traditional Bowhunter and whatever I could find that would prove useful, because I was often using my flintlock. Learned to stalk a deer in the summer, but after opening day, the deer become extremely cautious. Deer don't see color so hunter orange is great to protect you from less careful hunters, but even plaid wool shirt works as camouflage, if you know how to walk. For several years I smoked my clothes twice a season using a wildflower, Aster that the Indians used. They used the root, I just used the herb. Definitely masked my scent. After scorching the cheap synthetic coat, I switched to washes/sprays that reduce scent and hanging the clothes outside.

I wish I had half your experience. That said, between my time hunting, and my time in the woods with the dogs, I think I’ve approximated enough situational awareness. Will have to experiment with these stealth concepts with my buds.

And you have brought up why I don't hunt with anyone anymore. They're too noisy. Stomping around, breaking every branch. I carry chafing fuel -not sterno, if I need a fire (it lasts longer). It's quiet & can prevent frostbite, very low fumes. When I have hunted with friends back in the day, it saved their fingers twice from frostbite. All gear should be checked for noise-shake it, check for rattles. The vehicle is a great point.

Saw preferred to an axe ? Leather sheath over a kydex ? Leather boots better than synthetic (sound) ? Smell : I gave up smoking many years ago , now a smoker just about knocks me down . Food people eat stays with them . Clothes : need that environment smell . Is there any brand of hand soap that doesn't smell like it civilization ? Good stuff Blackie , I'm going to pay closer attention to stuff in my pockets . I do shake , jump test with my gear , even firearm . In the army we had an exercise to improve camouflage and concealment techniques. We'd all head out a few hundred meters into woodland from a clearing. The NCOs in the clearing would blow a whistle and turn their backs to us while we advanced on the clearing. They would then blow the whistle at random intervals telling us to stop and turn to face us, picking out soldiers who could clearly be seen and were now out of the exercise. The man who got the closest to the NCOs without being detected at the end of the exercise was the winner. We stuffed grass and branches into our webbing and helmets just like you're teaching here, you've got some really good advice Blackie - thanks for taking the time to share 👍🙂

Really appreciate your experience and wiwsdom, Blackie. You reminded me of a stealth camping trip a couple of buddies and I took on a friend's wooded hill property about 40 years ago. He would meet us at the pond atop the small mountain. Being the sort we were, we hiked up from the opposite side of the mountain from the road. I was scouting about 30 yards ahead, and when I slipped through the brushy trail at the top, I saw our friend lying prone among the pines, in camo, looking intently at the roadhead on the other side of the pond. I slowly crawled through the tall grass and weeds toward him, and when I was about 12-15 feet from him I stood up. He finally sensed me and turned around to see me smiling and wiggling my knife in my hand at him. It was a personal victory for myself and fun for all of us. Thanks for the induced flashback.

Hey, Blackie! I just discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago and I gotta thank you for all the info and tips and tricks! I'm learning a lot from you. So, thanks for that! Sincerely. To the point of the video - I live in central Florida and I do a lot of fishing on the flats of the gulf. It's my playground. Oyster bars, red fish, snapper, snook, spoil islands everywhere and a lot of them you can camp on... It's a great place. Something I've noticed out there, boy does sound carry on the water! Even with white caps, if the wind direction is right, I can hear every word of a conversation happening on a Carolina skiff anchored dang near a mile away! People who are out there fishing must know that. I think they just don't care. Lol I do, though. I like to see you before you see me, if I can help it. 👍 Thanks again and keep it up, man!

I read that somewhere around 80-90% people nowadays can't stand the silence of nature and need some background noise just to know they exist. Getting people to be silent is like asking Seagulls to not fly over your food. Even in the bible it is said the giants found the humans loud and noisy, and they had no boom boxes back then!! Meanwhile, it is estimated that the sound of a modern refrigerator (I probably read that about 15-20 years ago) would have been a major annoyance for people not even a hundred years ago and I agree.

Just found the channel, this is awesome. So much knowledge to absorb, this is going to take a while. I'm a DV living out in the mountains of Colorado. The quiet vehicle part is a big deal for me too, I'm trying to figure out how to make an ATV as quiet as possible. I wanted to add that people who do not normally spend a lot of time in the woods are very loud too. The people who spend a lot of time are as quit as game, when they are running in the woods you can't hear or see them until they are right up on you.

Hey Blackie! Another great video I swear we must have been brothers in another life! When we were kids we played almost the same game, we'd give someone a head start and then try to track him. Another game we played was to try to sneak up on someone and see how close we could get without being detected. When we'd go hunting my dad would have me jump up and down to see if anything I was carrying rattled. Regards and best, Pink.

Thanks Blackie, a lot of these techniques are what a buddy of mine and I used to use when we would go fishing in those “Special Spots”, you know, “Murphy’s Pond”, back in the day. Always catch and release though, never ever even left a trimmed piece of line, or even a footprint behind.

This series brings me back to my child hood in south Louisiana we did the same things and I keep getting oh yea memories from this series. Its funny how much you forget after 50+ years of not doing these things.LOL

Hi Blackie! One of these days, I want to tell you a long but interesting story about a SF guy who went AWOL, hopped a train, and lived in our woods for nearly three months before he was noticed. I was able to inspect his shelter and other accommodations after the fact. Needless to say, I was impressed!

Just found your channel, very insightful stuff. One tip for walking stealthy, think of the old cartoons when they did that exaggerated creeping walk. It's more effective than you think, even if it makes you look silly. Edit: noticing a few comments saying emergency blankets to thwart thermal. You want a fire smothering blanket, will completely mask your temperature.

Stealth camping, hiking, tracking deer and looking for human tracks. Looking broken grass or sticks; is it human or deer? We got 200 acres to protect. Keep up the great work!

Good vid, good practice idea. Dont do that stuff up north because more people get shot when others are hunting around you and dont know you are there. Use a marker at your campsite. Wear hunter orange at all times. Only ever stealth camp/hike when it's not hunting season, you are close to heavy traffic areas or on your own private property, always tell someone where you are, and do normal times check-ins with someone. We have more hikers getting shot because they are trying to do stealth hiking/camping where/when they shouldn't be doing it each year. Just this year we have had more hikers shot because they thought stealth hiking was a good idea. Be safe!

A few things I know about deer hunting & clothes are: Blue is the worst colour you can wear in the bush. Clothes washed with normal detergents have perfumes & nitrates. Anything with "poly" in it is a bad choice of hunting clothes. This is a great series Blackie. Hope between work to watch the whole series!

I know in the Army practicing ambushes the first indication the target was approaching was engine noise. Then you watched for the blackout lights. Great info yeah nightvision and infrared make it a whole lot more difficult. Great info Blackie.

The ultimate game of Hide and Seek :) By the way, baby oil usually has a scent. Maybe they make unscented versions. If not, just use mineral oil.

You can beat thermal with just a tarp, as long as you aren't touching it and radiating heat. Just need a little gap between you and it, but in an emergency you can just throw it over you and it'll hide you fine for a while. Good videos, subscribed :)

When we were kids we used to play a game called "Fox & Hounds". The guys not caught were the ones who were, either, the fastest or the best at hiding. E&E as a game. Honestly, I was 50/50. Still, fun days. Fond recollection of the guys tends to make me miss Roger & Johnny & Lawrence and bunch others can't recall names of anymore after near 50yrs.

It took me a while to be convinced but the sweat is worth the extra clothes if you ever have to step out of the woods and don't want camo or naked. Dress under to blend to the reason you would be where you are while being seen and not have it connect to you from where you came

I almost had to use your techniques today.

Many times I have shutdown my vehicle and coasted down a grade to park my vehicle. These new electric bikes is where it's at now. Wash clothes in baking soda, hang dry, put them in an unscented garbage bag full of leaves and pine. Leave your gum boots in the back of the truck and put them on after you get there. Gas up the day before and don't stop at the local restaurant or pump n shop the morning of the hunt because of scent. Nothing metal to metal in your pockets. Move with the weather. If its calm move slow and easy and very quite. When in the timber listen, look and you'll hear and see sound and movements you can get by with. Of course the watch dog of the woods is the common squirrel! Little bastareds will rat you out in a heartbeat!🤣😂 All great advice Blackie.

My grandpa always said that when you are in the woods, the longer you are quiet, the better the hunting gets. I was kind of heavy footed as a kid and could hardly move without stepping on a stick or something else that was crunchy.

It's amazing that all this information is tried and tested over the span of Blackies life, so it is effective. I dare say you had to hunt for food at one time. You remind me of Mike from Breaking Bad lol, i don't mean looks, but always 2 steps ahead. Where are you from Blackie?

Old school pro tip. Simple white scarves ( round abouts 2 1/2 feet wide by 5 1/4 feet long) that are dyed brown help out with covering the face and can assist with being a valuable modular peice of kit in the Bush. They can be wrapped as a muffler, a head cover, be tied as a makeshift backpack and work as a wind breaking shawl. In place of modern dyes, you could also use tea staining or coffee staining techniques to darken your natural colored clothing as well ( I find chestnut and black coffee brown blend well in night time/ low light/ high shadow environments, as well as dark blues and dark grey.).

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME VIDEO BLACKIE!!!! My friends and I would do something similar when we where young. But of course BEING GOOD IN THE WOODS was a very high compliment back then!!!

To hide better from thermal readings go stand next to a wooded area of cedar trees or other radiant trees that put off a high heat signatures, knew pot farmers who used the trees to hide more of the crops from the thermal reading copters that roamed the hills. Conifers radiate more than other trees.

Lol, had a ‘53 Ford mainline you had to put your hand on the fender to know if it was running, 223 6 cyl. Good muffler. Built solid, no rattles. Could sneak up to the door at 2 am, make it to the stairs going to my bedroom, not get busted if I didn’t step on that 3rd from the top step as it would pop like a 22. Yep stealth at it’s best , lol. I tell u what those new electronic assistant bikes are about as stealthy as you can get ! Model depending, some of them when u engage that electric moter they can go anywhere between 30 and 50 mph with 0 engine noise 0 ! It's only as loud as a pedal bike and it can go anywhere a mountain bike or dirt bike can. The range of the electric moter can vary but it's a really good option if u need to get in and out of some land quickly and quietly .

watch where and how you park too you have to take the sun reflecting off the glass into account!! i've spotted more than one hunters rig from the sun shining off their windshield! game warden spotted them too!

Those reflective emergency blankets can hide your thermal image pretty good...

Light is also a tell. If you must have a light red light doesn't affect your eyes like blue. Dogs can see blue and yellow. Hogs can see red. I can see the eye reflection of animals using red light. In my backyard rabbits, raccoons, opposum and house cats all can be sneaked upon.

Your best informational video I have seen yet. When I heard you say whore bath I nearly peed myself. Thats good ol southern speak right there. While I am by no means a master of quiet I cannot tell you how many shots I have missed at deer because I walked up so close to them it startled me when they jumped up and ran. Some within 10 yards. Great if I were a shotgun hunter but I prefer a good rifle. Thanks for the great content

Welll said. There's a yahoo that lives on the road I live on. It's a full mile to either end. I can here him coming and going past either end. Most annoying, especially up close.

@BLACKIE THOMAS, One thing I've noticed is the bill on a hat emits a surprisingly large shadow that can be seen some distance away and will easily alert others to your position. Is it possible to drive at night without using your headlights which will give away your location? I know it's possible on a full moon but the moon isn't full most of the time. Also, there's a RU-vid channel called Brent0331 that I think you will like. He has a ton of camo videos that I've learned a ton from.

I'm grooving on your comments-but, Black Bears-a solid, deep BLACK-are almost ghosts in the woods. Put just a few twigss or leaves in front of the Black Bear and the eye interprets the broken Black background as deep shadow. Of course. IF you're going to DEPEND on Black for stealth, best take some black things into YOUR local Forest to check it out. Also, camouflage patterns ONLY help break up the outline when you are close enough to SEE the pattern. At any reasonable distance, the eye integrates Woodland Came into a single shade of green. Knowledgeable people have been advocating for MUCH LARGER MORE ROBUST came patterns for years. I saw some IPSC Option-Item targets sprayed with brown and green patterns the size of Yorksbire Terriers and they were VERY hard to pick out.

Truck?...ok...today they got so much "gear" hanging off just a keychain you would think some of them were building supervisors from the 70s with a ring of keys the size of a soft ball. Thumping music with bass tearing the vehicle apart. All kinds of trinkets and noise making toys that are completely unnecessary making videos on EDC. OH IM PREPARED...Well its like ReallyBigMonkey1 says..."If somebody says I didn't mean to do that...Did you mean NOT to do it?!" Did you mean for whatever NOT to detect you within the best of your capability? Good stuff Blackie.

Never leave a vehicle sitting on the side of the road if you can help it. Old trick we did when we had no choice was to flatten a tire and have a pump.
