You explain is so well, i have tinkered with the steam controller before, but found some of this quite a hassle I can't wait to try this with my steam deck whenever i get it thank you
@@Kevin-sl3gk Yeah, I'm hoping it comes back soon. There are a few old features that aren't there yet from the old BPM. Most notably for me are custom named touch/radial menu items and icons.
This is a fantastic video! Thanks for this. Do you know how to disable the use of gyro for the mouse cursor when using in the menus? That's the only thing that's a bit beyond my understanding right now.
Awesome video! I just got my deck and am currently messing around with steam input. I'm testing out using trackpad your way but a lot of times when i try to spin to the left or right the camera also goes up or down. Have you messed around with disabling vertical movement with the trackpad and using gyro exclusively for vertical? Curious your thoughts on that approach
You might want to adjust the neutral angle for the trackpad horizontal swipe. I personally never touch that setting though. As for using it only for horizontal movement, it is definitely playable. Look up "flick stick" on RU-vid though. The entire idea behind that is to rotate the right stick to only do horizontal movement and rely entirely on gyro for everything else. It's pretty cool but not intuitive enough for me to get used to.
I've just gotten my Deck and when using Gyro aiming it's really bad it stops and starts it seems if i go to far left or right it stops working and i have to re center with the stick. The gyro aiming in Half Life 2 on foot doesn't work properly but it's perfect in the fan boat. My camera pans up when i use the track pad and then gyro afterwards, it's a pain. Il stick with anologue sticks the tried and tested method as gyro aiming feels sloppy and broken.
I'm trying to set up gyro on Hitman 3, and when I touch the track pad to activate gyro aim, there is a bunch of eratic drifting in seemingly random directions when i don't move the deck. Anyone experienced this?
Well for anyone else experiencing this problem, i launched steam big picture from desktop mode, went to settings, controllers, down to the neptune controller, and recalibrated the gyro. This seems to have fixed the issue.
Joystick + gyro can be really good if setting joystick to flickstick but that can be very difficult to get used to. I play joystick+gyro with my DualSense all the time and do just fine. I still much prefer a trackpad though.
Question: you're using your thumb with the right trackpad, but you also use your thumb for the right thumbstick. It's essentially the same thing, so what's the point?
No. That's up to the game to handle. Some games have that setting like CSGO. The Steam Deck can't keep track of where the camera has moved to. It's just feeding inputs to the game.
@@Moskeeto Completely agreed. Also flickstick is unnecessary when the trackpad can give you an immediate 180 with a quick swipe but still give both horizontal and vertical camera movement
I've always been a fan of gyro aiming but I would never use it by itself. The trackpad or stick are what I use for larger movements to move the camera and the gyro is for fine tuning my aim. They are used together at the same time.
As long as you add them to Steam, it should work fine. Just keep in mind this tutorial is specifically for Doom Eternal. The number values would have to change depending on the game and might require some tinkering.
@@Moskeeto Thank you. From a Windows perspective (my Steam Deck is dual boot) I've considered using Handheld Companion, but I think you tutorials have saved me the trouble. You have without a doubt earned my subscription with your gyro tutorials. Have you considered doing one for emulation like Citra, CEMU, Yuzu, RPCS3, or Xenia Canary?
I'm not great at this game but this is the best way for me to play FPS titles. However, I find it a lot easier with an external controller and playing on my lap. The weight of the Deck and playing on a table surface for the sake of recording gameplay definitely work against me.
