Slightly tongue in cheek here. The SteamDeck is a fully functioning Arch Linux PC which packs an appreciable amount of power in a portable package. Today I show you have easy it is to get up and running on #WSJT-X

Love my steamdeck for gaming, I ended up dual booting due to some games.. I think I'm gonna need to take the deck out on a POTA here soon & Log on a deck!

I have been using the android port of sdr++ and satdump on my samsung fold 4 with a rtl-sdr v3 over otg and its quite immpresive

Don’t buy more than a 64. Upgrading the SSD is relatively easy. I’m rocking a TB that I use for games, emulators, and flrig/fldigi

I was going to use my steam deck for my sdr stuff, but having the udev rules wiped after every update seemed like it was going to be a pain. That was a while ago though, and dont know if thats still the case.

How did you install a Debian package on Arch? How did you get the radio talking to the ACM2 port? I can get the soundcard working, but not radio control. Thanks for trying, but you really only posted half the story here.

I didn't do anything other than update the deck, boot the desktop and install WSJTX. I promise, no smoke and mirrors here.

@@HamRadioCrashCourse Forgive me, I meant no disrespect but when I went to install WSJT-X I found that Debian packages do not install on Arch without some setup. Flatpak (the only included package manager) didn’t have WSJT-X but did have JTDX which I installed. I can see the ports populate when I plug my Xiegu 6100 in, but there is never a connection between the USB device and anyplace on /dev/tty*. This is why I wish you would have covered how you get WSJT-X installed, and anything you did to find and prove the ports you were connecting to. Back to my situation, I had five options for ports USB, and /dev/ttyACM0-2, and a /dev/ttyS4, none of which worked for CAT control. Though I did get the audio setup. Ironically enough, when I was first setting things up, I was getting air-gapped decodes from the speaker of the 6100 and the internal microphone on the Steam Deck, how neat is that? Thank you for replying, I just wish I knew how to get the USB device bus to start talking with /dev/tty[whatever].

only problem i see is the battery life on the steam deck it charges via the USB c and if you are using USB C unless you use the hub

I have no interest in gaming..., or really the Steam Deck. The SteamOS is also new to me, but I am interested to know whether it has other uses besides gaming. I understand that it runs on Arch Linux and I saw you switch to desktop mode... Does desktop mode just take you out of SteamOS and back to Arch Linux?

I am a known suspect in the We Want Linux for our Radios gang. While I never buy new computers, since I can get computers crippled by WIndows for pennies on the dollar, I never the less love that you showed this option. I am using the Inovato Quatra's now, (I bought 2) and they are amazing - for $30.00 I am running JS8Call and WSJT-X without issues.

The Steam Deck was one of, if not the best handheld PC to be released in 2022. One minute you can be slaying demons in Doom Eternal, the next minute you can be making contacts on FT8! Valve has truly created something special here with the Deck. Though I wish I had gotten the 256gb model, I love my Deck and have barely begun to unlock it's potential! Do yourself a favor though, get a good screen protector (not the amazon special). There's this one horrible company that springs to mind, D something... If you know you know, lol. Good on Valve for deciding to throw some support to Linux gamers by deciding to go with Arch for their OS too, who knows what exciting things will be coming down the pipeline in the coming year! I'm debating on bringing my Steam Deck to WFD with me... haven't decided yet. 73 de W8IJC

There are companies making single-sided M.2 2230 SSDs that will work in the deck. Getting to it isn't horrendously difficult, just a bit fiddly as it does require farting around with a bunch of really tiny screws. There's a full write up on replacing it over on ifixit. I got the 256GB version, and I've found that if you buy a decently quick micro SD card that the loading times really aren't that bad, so I'm not in a hurry to replace it yet. But I'll eventually get a 1TB drive for it. That said, I have no clue whatsoever what the price is on those drives as they are not terribly common. I'm guessing they aren't cheap, at least compared to the typical 2280s anyway.
