Coming out of nowhere, Valve delivers a brand new Steam Deck, packing a 7.4-inch OLED HDR display with a 90Hz refresh rate. But that's just the headline bullet point on what is actually the most comprehensive 'mid-generation console refresh' we've ever seen. Improved battery life, cooler, lighter, improved haptics and audio, increased repairability - the new Steam Deck is simply brilliant.

That also means lower input latency at lower refresh rates
@ThisisCitrus
@ThisisCitrus 6 месяцев назад
@@ReachTea It wouldn't, would it? Latency is tied to Hz and FPS so at lower refresh you get higher latency. My 120hz TV has to play Starfield at 60hz VRR, and so I get 60hz latency not 120hz latency.
@fVNzO
@fVNzO 6 месяцев назад
@@ThisisCitrus Yes and no, the minimum latency and response time has to go down (if it doesn't the screen will start ghosting, be unusable). Higher refresh rate means you also *need* better response times - that is for the screen to actually be functional. Therefore it is safe to assume that it is a faster screen as well. You could technically imagine higher refresh rate with still shitty reponse times, and this is what we have seen with some low end monitors before but it would be highly unusual.

No VRR, no buy
@user-kg4mq1qk6f
@user-kg4mq1qk6f 6 месяцев назад
@@fVNzO But it only has a faster screen at 90hz, the Steamdeck is VRR so at 60hz the Steamdeck OLED will have the EXACT latency of a 60hz Steamdeck LCD. Also Steamdeck won't run MOST games at 90fps, it can barely get 60fps. Meaning the latency will only be improved on content over 60fps/hz. Now the OLED vs LCD will give it better response times because OLED is faster.

@@MorrisseyMuse The ROG Ally is about 10-20% better performance than the old Steam Deck, so probably about 5-10% more powerful than this one. But that's running at twice the TDP. The Steam Deck OLED will almost match the performance of the ROG Ally, but it'll be; 1-Cheaper by a significant margin. £479 vs £699 is not even close. 2-Have a better screen. OLED is literally the best screen tech out there. 3-Much better battery life. 4-SteamDeck OS which is far superior to the Armoury Crate. I would never recommend the Ally over the Steam Deck OLED. I could argue it over the original Deck, but now that performance gap has closed, making the Ally just more expensive with worse battery, worse screen and worse OS.

Honestly since I already own a 1st gen Steam Deck I'm sitting out on this one. However, I think the upgrade is rather big, because screen is one of the only complaints I have about the Deck, and before it was integrated into the OS, vibrantdeck made the screen 100% better, I could never go back to the Deck without it. Props po Valve for addressing the concerns of the community and actually listening to the community this time while still making the Deck cheaper than competition. I suspect this will appeal to gamers that have not bought into the Steam Deck yet, or ones that have but want to upgrade regardless. Most that have the original Deck wont likely upgrade, but this Deck could open up the market to many of the gamers that didn't want to buy in because of the screen or battery life, with this Deck, it's a big quality of life improvement in a lot of areas, even the performance has got a nudge up which isn't anything special but it's there.

I got the deck on launch, rog ally at launch and legion go at launch. The steam deck is the weakest out the bunch I don't really like it. May trade my old deck for this one though, or mabye hold out for a deck 2. Valve should've made the deck oled smaller. I hate how bulky and heavy the deck is.

Do you have issues with the sd reader on the ally? I heard this is a major design flaw.
@MithosDagon
@MithosDagon 6 месяцев назад
@@blackfalcon1610 I did when I had an sd card in there. It caused my Ally to freeze a lot, had some booting issues and eventually stopped reading it. So I took it out and I stopped having those issues. It can now read the same sd card again, but since I still have my deck, I didn’t have a need to use an sd card when my Ally had a 2TB installed (my SD has 3TB of storage). I’m seeing in RU-vid videos that putting a heat shield strip over the sd card reader internally fixes the issues, but I haven’t tried it since then.

@paul1979uk2000
@paul1979uk2000 6 месяцев назад
No, it's the memory running at higher clock rates, that will give a performance upgrade in most 3D games, I think the original Deck was running at 5500 whereas I think Richard said the new Deck is running at 6400, so think of it like overclocking your vram on a gpu that gives extra performance. SteamOS 3.5 likely does help to deliver a bit more performance on some games, but the new Deck is going to be better performance over the old Deck in almost all 3D games thanks to the memory upgrade.
