Steam doesn't let you keep your games...

In light of the recent events of the past few years from Ubisoft taking away peoples games, EAs DRM practices, Microsoft not letting people play singleplayer games if they're offline, etc I decided to make this video.
The lack of actual ownership and independence from distribution platforms in gaming disturbs me and I see it setting a very bad situation going forward which is why I've stopped buying games on Steam and switched to GOG.
GOG is a DRM free platform that used to only have older games but now has alot of newer titles like Wolfenstein, Elder Scrolls, Stalker 2 (whenever it finally releases), and even Fallout London.
Please note I am not in any way sponsored by GOG I just made this video because I think it's a good platform that more people need to know about.
Thanks for watching. Leave a like if you enjoyed!
The games in order of display if you want to play any yourself:
Chernobylite
Lego Star Wars TCS
Easy Red 2 (briefly shown to show Steam DRM)
Fallout London
Army Men 2

*Correction At one point I say every game in this video is available on GOG. This is technically not true. Easy Red 2 which I very briefly displayed to show how Steam DRM works is unfortunately as of the making of this video NOT on GOG. All the others are though. Sorry for any confusion that may have caused.

Dude, a THOUSAND percent YES. I love having my game library aggregated as tightly as I can get it, and Steam seems to have like every notable PC game around! Of course there are some plenty of exceptions, but Steam is the BIG one. There is SO much to appreciate about Steam, and most of the features on offer there click into place when they need to and _just work._ That said, I've been trying to reduce my reliance on Steam for some time now, and I've been doing the exact same thing you have by buying from GOG instead whenever I can. It may not be as feature-rich and convenient to use GOG, but backing up my offline installers and keeping in mind that I've helped directly support the main driving force behind my ability to continue legally buying these games without DRM... The feeling is unmatched. Utterly delightful. ❤️❤️❤️ It does hurt to know that Young Horses had a pretty rough time when they'd released Octodad onto GOG, so they decided not to bring Bugsnax over... And of course there are plenty of other stories where talented and promising developers have been put off by GOG's inconsistent quality standards or communicational issues. I can't fault them for the real experience they had, and I wish them all the best regardless. But GOG does need to establish more clear guidelines for prospective publishers and greater communication and clarity for everybody. I want to be able to point at GOG and say they're just the BEST place to buy AND sell games! While they're unquestionably Steam's greatest competitor, they still have a good way to go. But holy CRAP are they ever on a great path now!! I still use Steam, and I probably always will if I can. But GOG's values and ideals line up VERY closely to my own, and that goes a long way! I'm a good and passionate customer, and I fight hard for those who treat me well. Despite their numerous mis-steps, I'm very happy to continue supporting GOG 💜💜💜

@@BrokenCircle1 I apologize, I've gotta get some rest before work.. But man, Bugsnax is super charming and would've fit into GOG's catalog beautifully! That's just one of the situations where a developer told me directly why they don't plan on releasing on GOG. Really got me thinking about how many times I had requested GOG releases, and what it might actually cost to do so (beyond just the money and time to prepare a DRM-free build). In any case, I'm happy to accept a "no" and buy on Steam instead. They have their reasons :3

Seems like a good alternative, though im not sure if all the games in my current steam library are available on it. I'll definitely check GOG out. Hopefully GOG will stick to it's consumer friendly tactics and not sell out, which is my main concern. I like Steam, it's been good to me for many many years. I haven't lost access to any of the games I have purchased other than online games. I love the features and how it integrates with the Steam Deck too. I will agree that more people should make the effort to use GOG as well and in a perfect world every game available on Steam would be on GOG as well but that's far from being the case. If you only purchased PC games on GOG you'd be missing out immensely. Personally I'm not worried about losing my games but if that were to happen and a developer decides to remove a game I have paid for out of the blue I will pirate it. I don't believe the problem lies with Steam but with our government. Laws regarding digital ownership need to be updated yesterday. I don't know the perfect solution but developers should not be allowed to just remove games we have purchased. They shouldnt be on the hook for supporting a game indefinitely obviously but there's no reason why single player games would have to be removed. I would even like to see multiplayer games have the abilitty to be played P2P if a developer decides to end support for it but that's probably not happening.

Honestly, I'd like to see actual physical copies of pc games return. I miss those cool looking boxes and extra goodies they often came with. Just a dream, I know... I'm very skeptical of GOG staying good. I've already seen games get delisted that you cannot play now if you didn't purchase them. When buying older games, do your homework and make sure they'll actually work. Some will require outside patches/mods to get working, just like on Steam. And then there's the owner of GOG, CDPR. I'm very concerned with the political direction their going in. That way leads often to censorship and deletion of "problematic" games.

This also benefit customers whose content are censored by (forced) future patches/update, eg; The removal of many custom arts by many artists on further versions of Skullgirls, or how Rockstar Games removed many memorable radio music on past games ported to newer hardware due to expired licenses, or how Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2 aren't available for purchase due to the same reason as rockstar games radio music.

I don't get the argument, you say you want to buy from the company that let's you keep your games but it's not up to Steam or GOG if let's say Bethesda suddenly would pull their games from said storefronts... Has anything been pulled from GOG? I know Steam let's you keep your game even if a company suddenly decides it wants to delist it. That being said the biggest problem GOG has is that it barely gets any new release whatsoever, you get these random drops of a few semi new releases but the vast majority of new titles simply don't appear on there which is why I personally only use them for their 'Good Old Games'.

Games have been delisted on GOG like all the classic Unreal games and Spec Ops The Line. Happened on Steam too. So if you didn't purchase them, tough, their gone.

Personally I think with steam and gaben we're safe at the moment. gaben has also supported piracy saying that paying for a laptop, then internet connect and games is too much for a casual person. What I recommend people do is stop buying games that use the ubi and ea launcher.

I havent watched the video but I understand exactly what is being talked about with the description. I agree that GOG is better if you want to "own" the game but then and again what if the internet somehow goes out? Any collection you didnt download is also now gone, also GOG doesnt have a lot of the other services that Steam has, and GOG lacks alot of the games + no modding workshop that are on Steam. To be also honest the companies doing these scummy moves also just make really bad games imo, EA and Ubisoft have fallen from their once good status, the actual worthwhile games you can simply pirate, like old NFS games, since they arent even sold anymore

GOG sounds good but I'd have to buy a bunch of games all over again. Does the Bethedsa CC content carry over to other copies of the games or would you have to have an alternate account for a GOG install?
@BrokenCircle1
@BrokenCircle1 2 месяца назад
I'm not sure about that. What I will say is I recently rebought a bunch of games and it was fairly cheap. Some games go on sale for less than a dollar. I think I spent around 5 bucks for all the old Men of War games.

Quick question? If there is a game I have on my steam account and my device has had (almost) constant WiFi and internet access and I haven’t played it in a few years will it still work? You said that an old game you’d had on the shelves for years wouldn’t work or something like that

"at some point someone will buy out steam" Steam is a private company, they're not publicly traded Tell me you don't know how acquisitions and stonks works If a private company doesn't want to sell or be bought, they won't be, as there are no shareholders to appease or consider

"Turned the game woke." Damn, I agree with so much that you have to say, but I don't wanna watch anything else of yours if you're gonna do the culture wars. Diversity is important, representation matters, and it's a good thing when a game has something to say.

The problem is that Steam already has a captive audience and there's a literal cult surrounding an old fat man, so the majority will never be able to wean off of the platform until it shuts down for good. Sadly, not even GOG isn't completely DRM-free, but it's definitely the superior option, especially when paired with writable media. Fitgirl and the like are even better. I should also give Playnite and Radmin VPN a mention.
@BrokenCircle1
@BrokenCircle1 2 месяца назад
@BloodwyrmWildheart Never hears of those last few. As for the cultists I'm not really worried about them. Their stupidity will be their undoing. I'm talking for the people that don't know a better option but want one. But as for GOG yeah there was a reason I specified most games were DRM free. I am aware of some over time that have/had at one point issues with online registration or whatever.

Valve was first. They had to fight an uphill battle against both publishers and distributors so the designers - the people who actually make the games - can get more money. And if one entity can ever be said to have helped usher the Indie game renaissance, it's Steam. Listen : I don't have a dog in this fight! I don't own stock in any of these entities. All I'm suggesting is that unthinking hate (and ad hominem attacks) without nuances are no more productive than unthinking devotion . . .
@BrokenCircle1
@BrokenCircle1 2 месяца назад
@@vincelang3779 But nobody has unthinking hate here nor is anyone being attacked. Sure Steam definitely did bring about alot of great indie games but we should still be wary of future hostile trends to come.

You speak truth here. I'am already put down my resignation on steam platform and currently waiting for account deletion with over 200 games which I don't own of course, because it's just a licence only 3 days left untill steam deletes my account, also I don't trust GOG too much either because it's what you said people in power change and values changes as well, that means that companies are not friends to gamers, they are enemies to gamers. The reasons why I left steam is because 1. Uncertain future of steam we don't what will happen to steam after Gabe passes away, and he will eventually that is why I started to think about leaving steam. 2 All this "modern audiences crap" in every movie in every game it's just a huge turnoff I just want to play games, not to see another politics fail show, this is probably the biggest reason why I decided to leave steam, because soon every game will become like that even japanese and indie games won't be able to resist the DEI money, unfortunately that's what will happen, it's just a matter of time, this is why I don't trust gaming companies. Last reason is because "you own nothing and be happy" this is too much if we buy our games we simply buy licenses and those can be taken away at any moment, another big reason why I put my resignation on steam. Right now I"am back to PS1 games they are so much fun to play and right know there are so many translated japanese games, also fans are making resident evil mods on ps1 it's just so nice to play on PS1, because in my past I owned PS1 and lots of games, my cousin at that time already owned PS2 well because his parents had more money, but I"am happy that I got memories of PS1 and right I"am back to the games I enjoyed the most. Eventually all platforms will fail, businesses will fail because of anti consumer, and "DEI modern audiences" politics. In the end what we need is perservation of all media.

Don't delete your Steam account that wont fix anything. I get your frustration but don't willingly give up your stuff. As for GOG changing yes that is certainly a possibility I wouldn't be surprised if it goes under one way or another in a few years, I know they don't make much compared to other platforms. That's why I'm saying support it now, get it while it's good now. Back up your games so you can keep them.
@andriusnod913
@andriusnod913 2 месяца назад
@@BrokenCircle1 Look I understand what are you trying to say, but I already made up my mind about leaving steam, because as I mentioned, games will be lost anyway we just don't know when they will be lost. I know that my account deletion won't fix this problem but I will be free from steam and other platforms that require you to be constantly online, since I have my PS1 games I will play only older console games using emulator of course, that way I won't need to be constantly online I can play offline without worrying about internet connection. I guess that is another good reason to leave steam. As for my over 200 games the only thing I wasted is money games will go away if they are digital, but money can be earned back so it's no big deal, I decided to leave steam after I experienced a big burnout not just from many games but I believe achievements played a big role in my burnout as well, because I just can't concentrate on another game if I can't 100 percent all of game achievements, and even if I were to come back there I would just simply stare at my huge library, thinking which game to choose and after about 10 minutes I would just close steam, because I can clearly say I got burned out of games that are on steam.
