Filmed in 2006 this video takes the viewer on a journey up and down Snowdon. Filmed from the train and the lineseide the combination of outstanding scenery and steam hard at work on the rack and pinion is a winning combination.

Outstanding! Strong little rack locomotives there, they seemed to have no trouble on the steep incline! I can actually here the Swiss accent in their puffing, it's quite funny.

Thank you very much for your generous comment. It is not surprising of course that you heard the Swiss accent since not only was the rack system invented by Dr Abt but so too were the locomotives originally designed and built in Switzerland!! I am very glad you enjoyed the memories.

I have been up there and it was well worth the trip. Sadly, the peak was surrounded by cloud so couldn't see a thing.

I could not agree more about a preference for steam though I recognise that from a fireman's point of view it must be a real benefit not to shovel all that coal.

I imagine Snowdon may be as tall as BT Tower in Birmingham.

Snowdon beats it by a mile Mike. Snowdon is 1085 meters where the BT Tower is only 152 meters, according to Google anyway but I would not doubt it.

Thank You, gerrybatch! 152 meters high for the BT Tower in Birmingham is right ( 499ft ). I once walked over Bosley Minn / Wincle Minn, which is 1,260ft, from the Buxton road at about 1,000ft. There was a concrete track over the top of it but I was scared. There were great views across Cheshire to the west and to the Peak District hills to the east, but I am never climbing a mountain, they are my least favourite scenery! I do like this video though, gerrybatch! Enjoy your mountains! Cheers - Mike.

I looked up their web site, they now use Hunslet Engine Company diesel locomotives . These engines you are showing, were they steam, and powered by oil?

+HeartlandTuber They were actually using Diesel engines when I took this video and even though they may have added to their fleet since there are still coal fired steam engines operating now. From an operational point of view I am sure they have advantages but for a steam enthusiast like me the experience is just not the same. I hope you enjoyed the video.

+gerrybatch I've had a look on a few sites, and apparently the diesels save roughly 113 pounds per trip. Still, I do love their fantastic steam engines, so paying the extra fare for the "heritage steam" ticket seems worth it.
