Heisler steam locomotive pushes a train with cabooses to switch out a caboose for camping. This steam train is on the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad in Durbin, West Virginia and the Heisler steam engine was built in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1929AD. The train works on a 5 mile Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad branch line that is connected to the Cass Scenic Railroad in Cass , West Virginia. The tracks are almost put back into service between Cass and Durbin. They had been washed out for decades. We rode the train to the present end of line at Hevener Station and back. They let us off the train near the end of the active line and they set out a caboose for people to camp overnight in. After we got back on the train stopped at a creek and I filmed it being loaded with water. The engineer told us about a town that use to stand right at the water spot. The big white house that you see in the video was the home of the railroad president and has no road access. I learned that the hard way when I was filming one of the trains. I have more Cass and Durbin steam train videos in my Steam Train playlist so check them out son! Filmed July 16, 2020. The slide show is at the end. Thanks for watching! @@billmorris2613 Don't scale, pit, and corrode your boiler water and steam side by using raw creek water like they do in West Virginia. Always used softened or demineralized and chemically treated feedwater.
@billmorris2613
@billmorris2613 3 года назад
Railfanning Points 2.0 They may have put the chemicals in before adding the creek water. I would think that they would test the water either before or after filling the tender. They may already know the makeup of the creek. It may be the same all the time or it may change. I would think there is some runoff from the farming along that creek with heavy rains. Most fertilizers are corrosive. When we are out running we get our water from different cities. Then we test it in the tender and add the chemicals as needed. Doing a blow down of the boiler will help get rid of the solids, called mud. Also during each inspection we do a boiler wash and when we first start the water is brown from the mud that collects at the bottom of the firebox, which is called the mud ring. This will also remove the scale.

A steam ejector. Steam goes into a venturi, where it lifts the water. But the cold water also condenses the steam, warming the water as it does. They were more commonplace on steam tractors than locomotives, as railways tended to have water stops at regular intervals while tractors would be out in fields and forests without infrastructure. But it makes sense for a logging locomotive to have one on it, since they tended to not build as much infrastructure as passenger rail did.

FYI: A RR Teaching Moment. Starting at 17:50 thru 18:04 the intermittent sound of steam exhausting is the air pump / compressor starting and stopping a cycle. You can see it during the last few seconds of that cycle. The steam is exhausting toward the ground just in front of the middle truck. It provides the compressed air for the air brake system and possibly other appliances like the ringer for the bell. Like most compressed air systems it starts a cycle when the pressure drops below the minimum setting in the main reservoir and shuts off when it reaches the max. Max. Is probably between 120 to 140 lbs, minimum is probably 20 to 30 lbs lower. There is an adjustable governor that controls the start and stop of each cycle. Their air brake pressure is probably around 80 to 90 lbs.

Shortly after I retired I got involved with an organization, LASTA.org, that rebuilt to FRA standards a Mikado 2-8-2 steam locomotive that was built in New Orleans at the SP shops. I fired, ran, and worked on her for 15 years. She is currently undergoing a second rebuild and major inspection. If interested there are several videos here on You Tube of her out running on the main lines of class one and short line railroads. Just search SPX-745. Steam boiler fundamentals 101: proper boiler water filtration and chemistry is very important to prevent scale and corrosion. Scaling and corrosion of water side and steam side components, leads to damage, leaks, and failures. Don't do this except in a case of an emergency if there's no properly filtered (softened or demineralized) and chemically treated feedwater (treated with amine and phosphate).

There are several historical write ups of the evacuation of the wounded from Gettysburg. Nose to tail trains 5 at a time refilling water and wood at Creek stops, at times the soldiers were using bucket brigades for the water, cutting wood between runs of the trains. Supplies and materials in soldiers out.

@@railfanningpoints2.045 Very few locomotives get filled with properly treated water. Most of them take what the tower has in it, and apply the water treatment once it is in the tender. It is unusual to see a locomotive making use of an ejector like this to pick up creek water. Such was more common in steam tractors than locomotives, as tractors were often in fields and forests without infrastructure while railroads usually had water stops along the way. But it makes sense for a logging locomotive to be equipped, as their right of way usually had less infrastructure along it.

@@renegadeoflife87 It's 2021 not the 19th century. If they want to protect their boiler from corrosion, they would use treated water. After all this an excursion railroad with limited funds for maintenance.

Actually I think the Cass Scenic RR train is a much better experience. The Shay locomotives are serious logging units and the train ride actually takes you up on Cheat Mtn using switchbacks to accomplish the tightest turns. In addition the various buildings open for touring or rental in Cass are fascinating architecture from times long gone by but exceptionally well preserved. Best I recall your ticket purchase actually includes a film inside the station that details the history of logging on Cheat Mtn. It's a much more well rounded and complete experience IMO.

I grew up next to a coal railroad, if you have seen Rocky the motion picture, you have seen that railroad. there were what had become creeks by the time I was little. Those were originally dug and filled with water. the steam locomotives had a scoop mounted to the side. Those scoops picked up water from the ditches they dug. very cleaver. I'm retired from a 41 year career with Norfolk Southern, which was created by the merger of the Norfolk and Western Rwy I hired on with in 1974 and the Southern Rwy. Conrail was split up between NS and the CSX during my career when Conrail was ready to go belly up. It's amazing how many smaller railroads were merged to create the 4 Class A railroads in the US. My father hired on with the Virginian shortly before it's merger with NW long about 1956 I believe. As a child I got to ride the NW passenger trains between Norfolk and Bluefield to visit relatives every summer.

Hi. UK in the house. Lovely video and some great scenic views. I think that the railway stuff at the side of the line on preserved lines are really interesting. Taking in water from the stream: Did you know that once, in the UK, they took in water into the 'Flying Scotsman' from a canal (not usual practice). The water pipes became blocked and the locomotive dangerously overheated. It turned out that some live fish had been taken onboard in error. These caused blockages that could have had disastrous consequences.

Hey Sawtooth I'm from Lima and my granddad worked right across from Lima locomotive works builder of those shays he worked at Westinghouse which made the train's air braking systems My next big scenic ride ( I may be going to Cuyahoga scenic to ride behind their Alco around Labor day ) will be Cass scenic I doubt my wife let's me visit 2 in one trip lol so will have to be on another vacation when I'm not coming home to Ohio to visit family!! How about a tour around your regular CET ( IS THAT their reporting marks forgive me but chemo makes my brain go scattering sometimes ) I especially wanna get some photos and videos around and of that poor little red caboose you feature in a lot of your videos and that strange ( looks like 3 rds merge or converge may be a better word) crossing in Sardinia !! Anyway great video in Durbin WV esp love the cabeese in this video or if you prefer HACK Crummie or BOBBER lol love the ol'timers terms in railroading !! Keep up the good videos looking forward to seeing you and Jason together !! And Meigs co. Railroad too I just heard loved his work on the 402 I might have to model it as well !! Have fun on your scenic adventure oh wow in the caboose now cool Wabash caboose !!

That was no creek for most of the journey in this video. That's the West Fork of the Greenbriar River, a tributary of the main stem Greenbriar, which flows into the New River at Hinton, WV a good 100 miles or more South of Durbin.

That house would have scared the living daylights out of me when I was a little girl. After living in the country in NJ for a short time, I hated the idea of being stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Nowadays I'd probably enjoy myself watching trains go by.

Just to get away from the pressures this is the place to be. Looks like the town never modernized and that's just fine. Tree arches beat out golden arches any day. Right now those creeks and rivers look calm but after a storm they probably roar. Look closely at the house you want to stay at. I swear those second story green shutters are looking back at you.

Soon, maybe July 2021, that line will be completely rehabilitated connecting Cass and Durbin. All that needs to be completed is a bridge over a creek feeding into the Greenbrier River. Remnants of Hurricane Juan in 1985, and subsequent severe flooding washed out this line and killed 38 in the region.

I would really love to ride from Cass to Durbin. That is the only piece I haven’t ridden on yet but I walked most of it

Back before the Hurricane, WM 6 ran the line with the train to Durbin. Glad to see the Heisler doing these runs as WM 6 just never had a load on it whereas the Heisler is better suited. Would love for them to get 604 rebuilt and used on the run.

@@JawTooth Have you taken the Tygart Flyer out of Elkins about 30 miles West of Durbin? You can already use that diesel excursion train to hook up with the Cass Scenic train and spend overnight in Cass to return the next day I believe. The exchange of train rides is done on top of Cheat Mountain. Both the long and shorter Tygart Flyer trains stop at the High Falls of the Cheat (Shaver's Fork of the Cheat to be accurate) which is a 25 ft waterfall on a large (by WV standards) class V river reach.

When I saw the first siding with a picnic table, I wondered if you could rent a caboose for a few days.
@paulherring8959
@paulherring8959 2 года назад
Actually I believe that's why they drop those cabs off at those sidings. I think you'll find the cabs are occupied by paying guests who rent the cabs overnight and the cabs are then picked up by the next days train. The cabs have been converted to some extent for precisely that purpose, though the conversions are deliberately minimized to preserve their authenticity.
