It's the spooky season! That means it's time for a spooky shmup smorgasbord! Hope you enjoy and have a happy Halloween! My Twitter - / thebonezoneshow JJJJJohn - www.instagram..... Thumbnail by Meteor7 - / @thetoastergent
I remember watching your first Steam Shmups video ages ago. It's really cool to see how you've grown into your own, and even made these into a yearly tradition! Overall, great content as always Skeleton. Definitely have a few shmups I need to try out from your list! 💜 p.s. It made me really happy to hear you talk about Murasaki! It truly is a gem.
Thanks for the Demonizer shoutout! You can ask the composer RigidatoMS about a soundtrack release. I encouraged him to sell it and keep all the money, hasn't happened yet though. There are still updates planned for the difficulty and other things, but my programming style evolved a lot since v1.1.2. Now the plan is to use the engine of my recent game-jam shmup Honey Guardian as the base for Demonizer v2.0. I also can vouch for Assault Shell, Mecha Ritz (the older free version is still good too), and Star Prince from Retro Game Challenge.
Another belter you bone clad mo fo. Deffo gonna try Drainus after watching. The format of these round ups is golden, if the shmups dry up you could easily transfer it to another genre and I'd still come back. Keep rockin'!
Admittedly, I'm a shmup newbie, but I love these videos. I play a ton of arcadey score-chasing games, so it feels like a natural progression to get into these too, but I'm very often turned off by "...huh? What the hell killed me?" deaths and one-hit sudden deaths from off-screen. It's refreshing to see a shmup reviewer that isn't really a fan of those mechanics either.
I subscribed to this channel simply for the fact that you helped me unearth some early memories of me watching Most Extreme Challenge. This video and the many others you make are a lot of fun to watch.
Interesting find on RU-vid, it's rare to see someone covering indie shmups, specially after the fall of bullet heaven, keep doing the good work, my boney sir
@@ASkeleton "fell" was the best word I could came up to describe how I felt about that thing, I understand their side of things and their work will live forever... But still... The shmup ecosystem of RU-vid became smaller on that fateful last video and while I feel sore about that, I wish all luck and success of the world for them
Whoa, skeleton reveal o.o Fully agree about Astebreed btw. That game felt like I was just mashing randoms buttons and getting through it for a spectacle on screen that wasn't particularly rewarding.
Came here from the Pizza Tower "Conga Line", but I've seen your face before. Watched almost ALL of these SHMUP videos, now I have a Steam Wishlist full of SHMUPS... …Yous Good People, Mister Funneh Bones
Though this isn't a dedicated shmup only channel, it may well be my fave shmup reviewer. So refreshing to hear someone besides me hates Desotopia, & makes no apologies about it. Most channels I've seen covering Desotopia has hosts that make you feel terrible or unworthy, for not liking or "getting" it, but that shit dont fly at all with A Skeleton I tell ya what #awwyeeeah
You're such a small channel, so I have no idea how tf RU-vid recommended me your original Steam Shmups video...FOUR!?!? years ago, but man am I glad it did. That video got me to try this genre seriously for the first time since my local arcades closed down, and I've been having a blast going through all these bangers I missed out on over these years. Your annual Steam Shmups video is honestly one thing I consciously look forward to seeing in October, almost like seeing my buds for our Halloween party lol. PS - Drainus is one of the best shooters I've ever played and Team Ladybug are GOAT material.
@@ASkeleton if you've burned through many of the shmup gems, maybe even just doing another genre could be a twist! Like a bunch of indie beat em ups? So long as this "compilation" format stays, it's a fun October tradition you got here, haha
Nice, thanks for your usual yearly recommendations! I may actually buy Crimzon Clover, tried the demo and loved how it plays so thanks a lot for the update on that one!
damn , Halloween is a goner , gott'ah wait another year for your awesome shmup videos !!!! loved the new one , and re-watched the others . Thanks skelly ..................freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedome
If you get to see the bear on Mecha Ritz Steel Rondo, you ran out of time and the game is just waving you a consolation prize so you can finish the game. Don't let the Time run out and you'll see Veloce as the final fight.
Excellent video as always, just commenting for the algorithm :p Oh and also Murasaki has a sequel called Murasaki Tsurugi, it's basically more of the same but that's a good thing in my books lol There's also some more Touhou fangames on Steam now, Dream Logical World and Wonderful Waking World are both pretty good and completely free. Ephemeral Unnatural Balance also deserves a lot more love imo, the presentation isn't on the level of the FDF games but the gameplay is extremely solid.
@@ASkeleton I meant what I said earlier about finding a happy medium. Find weird indie games that remind you of titles from the past you liked and I think you have a compromise that will bring more subs. Good content either way but nostalgia is saturated, get in early to review a new game and the algorithm will find you the money.
What a great and funny video series! And There is still enough Shmups on Steam for at least a couple more episodes! Here are a list of some shmups to check out until next time! I have more on my wishlist and steam library but this will do for now. =) Gunvein (New bullet hell from NGDev Team Coming this month) Ghost Blade HD Crisis Wing DeathSmiles II Progear (And the rest of the Capcom Arcade Stadium shmups) Z-Warp Barrage Fantasia Adventures of Ten and Till Graze Counter GM (Date TBA) Squad 51 Vs The Flying Saucers Raptor: Call of the Shadows Sophstar Cygni: All Guns Blazing (Date TBA) Rival Megagun Raiden Legacy Risk System Dead End City (Date TBA) Missile Dancer
Squad 51 Vs The Flying Saucers is a blast to play, especially if 1950s sci-fi B movies is your thing. Really fun/unique aesthetics and solid gameplay, nice to see it mentioned!
Oh hey, Mecha Ritz Steel Rondo just got a new content update today with more ships and such, balance adjustments, ui touch ups, quality of life stuff like borders, tate support, controller configs, and even a native Linux port
Noooooooo!!! We need more shmups for skeleton to play!! Bad ass video as always! Have you done like a skeleton's top ten best / worst shmups? I've watched all these ones 🤣.
@@ASkeleton Fair enough! I'm looking forward to seeing a top ten best ones! 😎. Maybe a top ten difficult ones or something? Go crazy with those difficulty ratings ☠️.
Sisters Royale has a bigger problem: it's game speed is tied to frame rate, so if you go higher than 60 the game runs too fast. This is likely why they dont let you disable vsync. However having a 144hz monitor means my game runs in super speed unless I limit it to 60fps via Nvidia control panel. The game needs some serious patches.
This might be a little harder to find but I'd recommend Blast Works for the Wii. It was a smup I really enjoyed where you can attack the fallen enemies to your ship and become a giant ship kinda like Katamari. You could also unlock other smups in the game too. It had it's problems but think its a really underrated smup.
my experience with jetnguns werent good either, enemies dropping my health by ramming me from behind dropped it after the mid game since my auto homing guns that destroy everything makes things pretty bored also is runner shump shump?
I'm not sure if this counts but I'd recommend Monolith. It's a rougelike that's really fast paced and plays like a twin stick shooter. It's really fun hidden gem.
Nice roundup as always. Notes: The two versions of Bullet Soul (Infinite Burst has a fair bit of changes from the OG) are now on Switch, as it seems the developers just abandoned the PC versions (same thing with Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds) in favor of these console versions and not bothering to fix stuff. The reason why some of the Shmups on Steam don't have online leaderboards is because of the program they are made in, STG Builder, which is limited in some of the features, such as online leaderboards. And for the love of god, do not buy the console versions of Andro Dunos 2, Pixelheart/JoshProd messed them up hard, even though they fixed some of the stuff post release, it's not worth it. B.Ark is not optimized for 1P whatsoever, you need at least 3 people to get through it. It tried to be the next Jamestown, but failed at making the optimizations Jamestown had. If Astebreed wasn't your cup of tea, I would say you might enjoy Ether Vapor Remaster from the same devs more, since it is more STG-ish, as it primarily switches between Vertical and Horizontal ways of playing (think Salamander). It does have occasional moments, where it has different positions, but it has much better visibility. Mecha Ritz may or may not get a price increase when Version 2.0 drops, but the news about it are very few and far between, but that version is going to come to Switch as well. Zenodyne R is a remake of Zenodyne, which is free on Gamejolt. Jack Darx (Team Grybanser Fox Lead Dev) also got in touch with Jason Koohi, the guy behind Visegunne, who allowed him to use the music in that game from the cancelled Heaven Variant OST. Super XYX has quite a history, since it started with Gryzor (artist on ZPF) made a bunch of stuff in Blast Works on Wii, then wanted to make XYX a reality, but hit a bunch of walls and didn't quite make it. Then NG:Dev approached him and together, they made Neo XYX, but it wasn't quite what Gryzor envisioned, since it completely removed the fantasy element and stuck with machines instead. Then Gryzor got approached by Jack and got it fully realized and released in 2020. Very much influenced by later works of Toaplan, when it came to graphics. If you were to run out of Steam STGs, maybe look into Itch or DLSite stuff, just make sure that there's no smut, since DLSite loves that shit and some of the STGs on there have a lot of it. Hell, ransack through the free shmups on the wiki, you'll find some gold there.
Rocketron looks fun. I'll probably pick it up next time I notice its on sale. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it when you've had more time to play it.
Great video good sir! As someone who isn’t into shmups that much I’m impressed with the dedication and effort you put into these. A few games here I’ve added to my wish list for the future so thanks 👍🏻
JnG 1 gets far easier the further you get into it. It doesn't have the same level of world desroying build power like 2 does, but I remember the game being super easy when I just spammed missiles combined with either the poison gun in midgame or the hexagon gun in late game, since both of those pierce targets. Early game I'm pretty sure you can spam the hotdog truck so that you can field stronger weapons to cut through the game's numerous spongey enemies. Definitely one of the euroshmups of all time. 2 is just better though. 2 Had far better build variety out the gate, and that carries the gameplay loop. I wish I knew all the games out there that were similar, because the only ones I can really think of off the top of my head are Tyrian and Stargunner which I only found out about through this video.
theres three shmup games i know off that have levle and enemy deisgn clearly inspired by the alien films and hr gigar they are monsterous and grotesk, ill try to find the names for ya bone daddy ^^ i remember theyre all on steam edit im back with one of em called Angel at Dusk the art and enemy design is crazy! creative, monstrous, gross!... ill keep looking for the other two, edit i found the other two hr gigor cronenberg style shmup games sadly nether are available on steam but are available on pc theyre called galshell 1 and galshell 2
I just can't believe how it came that none of the new shmups have something really new... there are nice colours, some nice visual effects, but there are not new mechanics on how to play these games. I growth among arcade games, then had a clone of Nintendo (a Family Game console) and it's really frustrating how these indie games not even had a bullet time option, better animations, shaders and lighting effects. Best games from the Arcade Era still are the best ones. I've been watching some games from Nintendo Switch and man... some of them still using vector technology from the 70's, or pixel based ones. What is happening with the creativity of indie game developers!?
RangoK skies soundtrack was made ten years ago for an unreleased shmup called Heaven Variant (watch?v=SN1y-b9TTnQ). You can see one of the Astro port developers (Saku Tanaka) in this old french documentary (watch?v=UBn9Sdg8IcU , it was in 2006 so Astro Port didn't exist yet). At 22 : 22 he talks about a game he made with a shmup creation tool (dezaemon) for sega saturn. Maybe the Armed 7 prototype !
If you do end up finding enough games for one of these next year you might want to ceck out CosmoDreamer and it's sequel Like Dreamer. They're fun mix of Touhou and Cave.
I actually bought CosmoDreamer just a few hours ago. As for Like Dreamer, I took one look at the first screenshot and said "Might need to blur that out". Haha
A great new shmup compilation dude! Love these kinds of vids, it makes my day. Getting the coffee ready for this one. Oh, and anyone who likes and references Most Extreme Elimination Challenge is a gentleman and a scholar in my book. ☕
@@ASkeleton Oh, while I'm glad the RNG chose me... Truth be told, I don't get as much time for computer games these days. So please choose some other person so he or she can enjoy the game fully instead. Besides I don't want to be Nintendosmaug just sitting on a game or franchise while it is collecting dust in my Steam library. I'll stick with popping in, every now and then to watch your upcoming content with some tasty beverage in hand. Cheers, generous Skelly! :]
Wait, Vampire Survivors as SHMUPs? Did you read that wrong? Hold on, Vampire Survivors is a rouge-like wave survive game, not SHMUP. I'm confused. Edit: Silly me, I didn't get the fact that you REFERENCED Vampire Survivors as an example. 🤦
It would be good if you kept the name of the game overlaid. Otherwise you have to rewind to the beginning of each section. The more games you cover the greater the pain.
