There's nothing quite like the sight and sound of a steam train in full flight. Whether it's roaring through a busy station, or pounding through the open countryside. This video showcases several clips of British steam locomotives dashing along the main lines of England and Wales, all filmed between 2010 and 2014.

Defiantly agree there. I wouldn't like to see any steam loco get cut up. But there a lot more fun when you can here them with the smell the hot oil and smoke.

They may not be as powerful as diesels or electrics but jesus they are beautiful !!!

Actually, if you do the math on a higher power locomotive like this one, it is as powerful as the current fleet of diesels. Keep in mind, that trains that were pulled to very high speeds by one Steam locomotive, are now pulled by many diesels. I saw somewhere that this steam locomotive is somewhere around 10K horsepower. The big boys in the US UP fleet were also very high horsepower, and they were used in the early diesel days to help the trains to get over big passes where the diesels were just not powerful enough.

They are capable of as much power as many modern diesels, but they require more maintenance, and are prone to slipping.

3RTracing actually modern trains are more powerful, the most powerful steam train has around 6000bho and that's big boy, modern electrics can have way over 10,000bhp and like 300,000 traction effort or something crazy like that

@@michaelserby7697 Most of the time it is independent associations with a desire to keep them running. They also run museums in conjunction with their heritage railways, which are often closed down lines who are no longer in use.

This is one of the reasons I want to visit the UK so badly. Looks as if steam trains aren’t nearly as rare of a sight over there than they are here in the US. The shots of them blasting across the countryside, without a diesel helper engine, make me smile.

I'm french and I have known steam machines when I was young boy. We lived in suburb of Paris and sometimes,for her shop, my Grand Mother bring me to Paris to buy merchandises .We arrived at the great station named St Lazare.There were many steam machines but also all these of the electrified railroad network.It was in the mid sixties and juste before the seventies. In that moment when I write these lines ,I'm also reading a book writen by Clive Lamming ,a notorious specialist of the topic.Title is : British trains and railroad networks from tradition to modernity (1901-2000)!!!!Published in french by Atlas editions several years before. So I want to congratulate the author of this video such his work is perfect.Pictures,variety of steam machines,only the sound of these beautiful trains in stations ,counties , night and day. It is merely extraordinary to see the same machines I discover in my book ,but this time in live . From dream generates by pictures to reality nowadays!!! And we have also all the descriptions of the trains , names and types of machines.Very very respectable work. A great documentary on the British legends of the era of steam machines : Mallard,Bulleid,Flying Scotsman ,City of Truro and so much etc etc... For me these machines have a soul.At a moment we can see a steam machine and after, a recent train issue of modern technology.In the first case soul of man is speaking to us, in the second case, as modern cars :zero interest ,robotic work , no name ,no dream , no magical feeling. As for us with the TGV : a train to bring people from "A" point to "X" point, but not to travel ,to visit country , to spend our time to take time.... A triple hurrah to the British engineers who conceived these extraordinaries machines : William Dean for his "City of Truro" the first to reach the barrier of 100mph, George Jackson Churchward young engeineer implicated in Great Western Railway realisations, Nigel Gresley for his K, A1, A4, Herbert William Garratt who saved the Beyer-Peacock Company, Chief mechanical engineer C.B.Collett, William Stanier And so and so . Thank you so much to give the possibility to see these historical legends of the British railway steam machines!!

The speed at which those bars are moving on the wheels is unreal. Solid steel weighing a lot moving so fast it makes you feel like it defies the laws of physics or is going to time travel.

I am of that generation (born 1942). You actually got used to steam trains so that if the engine was commonplace (e.g. a Black 5) it all became a bit boring, believe it or not. Knowing what the real thing was like has given me a subversive attitude towards engine cleanliness. All very well express engines looking shiny and spruce but when you see a routine mixed-traffic loco (a Hall, say) done up to the nines it just looks unreal. Halls should be at least grubby otherwise they look like brickies at a wedding. Apologies to all brickies, skilled people.

There's just something with steam engines when they come past at speed. I don't know if it's their much louder noise level compared to diesels or their whistles when they're used but something about a steam engine coming down the line at you, whistle blazing, just gives off that "I'm fast and powerful so get the fuck out of my way or you'll get splattered" feeling. Don't get me wrong, I love diesels. They got that "workhorse" feel to them (maybe that's just because the only trains I've seen in person are freight trains pulled by diesels) but nothing will top a steamer.

Theses trains have a soul, in the US some steam trains are locked in museums felt to rust. Here it just seems like the steam trains are free( btw I don’t think the trains are alive beings)

This is one of the things I love most about steam engines; they've all got their own personalities. The sound of their wheels and pistons whirring along the rails, their whistles, you'd have to look hard to try and find two engines that sound so similar, and even then, there's bound to be a few small differences. We should seriously bring steam back into regular service around the world. Bring back the railroads!

I love it when they're running clean. The staged glamour shots with massive clouds of steam and soot pouring out of the locomotive are eyecandy, sure, but when it's running clean it feels like a living, breathing animal, a piece of history in the present. And you can't beat that.

This brings back memories. My grandad was manager of LNER and I stood on a few plates when I was young. It faded out for a bit and I lost contact with the UK as I lived in Germany then China over 10 years. When I came back I was stunned at the steam revival! Good on you all the enthusiasts. Keep them going. Its not history, as history is something that gone. Steam is not gone, just had a little nap, now she's back!

I'm American and I can see Great Britain has some really gorgeous steam engines. I see the "side pipes" of engines are all enclosed. I like the colors of the engines, too. That was a great shot of a Mallard.

After nationalisation in 1948 some British Railways locomotives had exposed pipework in the American style for reasons of efficiency, but they were the exception. There were even some US locos running on British tracks, mainly shunters (switchers) left over after the war.

What a beautiful edited video. You captured the essence of this piece of engineering history perfectly,well done 👍 The sounds of this beauties coming towards you at great speed and the plumes of smoke coming from the funnel, a sight to behold. Breathing in the smell the burning coal in the smoke, as they whistle by. I understand we must move forward, but that era was so exciting to see and hear. I cannot deny that there was a lump in my throat and tear in my eyes seeing them stretching their legs again. Thank you so much everybody for your time and effort to relive those halcyon days.

+Ponysynth One Official That's actually 4464 Bittern, functionally and cosmetically identical to Mallard, but Mallard is apparently too prestigious and famous to run, so she's been on static display for a while now, which I find a little odd as 4472 Flying Scotsman has just returned to mainline service and is one of the most famous steam locomotives in existence. Ah well, Bittern is still a fabulous locomotive.

Takes me back to going to school on a steam train. In those days the engines were absolutely filthy, not like the shiny ones you see now. But just seeing a steamer makes slightly misty eyed.

There's nothing but the joy and the happiness of seeing a restored steam train chugging along at 100 mph through the rolling pastures of England. America can never match the willpower of British railways. When I saw these these steamers hustling their restored carriages along England's countryside they brought tears to my eyes.

There's something so awesome about being able to see what drives a steam train forward as opposed to not seeing it in an electric/diesel train. I mean seriously the steam, and all that visible machinery moving, there's just something amazing about it. It's as if you can see the human effort and ingenuity that went into it all right there before your eyes. Love these things.

If I could travel by steam train, I would use it more as a mode of travel. There is just no charm in passenger trains using diesel locomotives. I live near a rail line that once was nothing but steam locomotives. The nearby town even had a station. Well, the station is long gone, along with every remnant of the steam era. Occasionally you can still find the odd piece of coal that fell off a train near the tracks, but it's rare since they have since dumped a lot of ballast.

There is absolutely nothing like steam locomotives when it comes to motive power. Over here in the States, I'm anxiously awaiting the return of Nickel Plate Road 2-8-2 No. 587, a locomotive that headed the Indiana State Fair Train every year when I was a kid. I loved seeing 587. She was pulled from service in early 2003 for a mandatory overhall after 15 years of service. She's expected to make her triumphant return in 2017, just in time for her 100th birthday. Anyway, this footage, in my opinion, belongs in a gift shop at a museum, it's that good. Great job.

There's no question; diesels and electric trains are faster. But there's something about a steam locomotive that is almost alive. For the elderly among us, we remember a time when they WERE the bees knees. For some, we remember them from our childhood, via cartoons and series like Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends. No other vehicle seems to live, breathe and move the way a steam locomotive does.

God they are beautiful, every single one of them, they were the backbone of Britain during the dark days of Europe, the thought of being there at that time watching them fly past the country fields on a cold crisp day and thinking, “God speed you legends, we’ll chase them all the way back to Berlin with the finest locomotives in Europe! Keep up the good work chaps!”

What some lovely images and footage! I've always loved steam trains for the variety and colour of the engines, that plaintive whistling noise, the roar of the wheels on the rails, the smell of the steam and engine oil in the station as they pass and the feeling of watching Victorian/20th century engineering that still exudes so much power as they pound out the miles to their destination. Thank you for sharing these, this video has definitely put me in the mood for a trip on the Severn Valley steam railway soon!

I served my time with British Railways at Gorton Tank Manchester as a 'Fitter', working on these magnificent beasts. but familiarity breeds contempt and I failed to see the beauty of the product. Thank God there were people with cameras and foresight who recorded them in full flight. The main 'Con Rod' which ties the wheels together took 8 men to lift it onto the wheels and to see it flying round as if it were made of balsa wood gives some idea of the massive strength of these machines. my sincere thanks to you guys with cameras and brains enough to know how to use them. this display of strength and speed makes 'Jurassic Park' look like childsplay.

Magnificent compilation. Thank you for taking the effort and time to post them up. I'm of an age when I saw most of those at speed when in British Rail daily service. 70013 Oliver Cromwell especially poignant. 1951, standing on Stratford Station in East London following my parents divorce hearing in the nearby court, I saw out bound from Liverpool Street the East Anglian Express. Flashed through the Station very fast but not fast enough I could not read the nameplate on the Smoke Deflectors. Vivid memory for obvious reasons and sewed the seeds of a lifetime's interest in transport. With flashing golden con-rods, 70013 looked brand new that day. Later, I discovered it had left the works where it was newly built not long before I saw it.

As a bit of a weather nut there's one thing I envy about the MidWest and that's the vast distances you can see, good for chasing tornados. In Britain you can see to the next bend in the road which may be as much as 100 yards.

Something about a Steam train at night as it passes by, the lamp in front, the glow of the cab and the lighting of the coaches as it passes is somehow majestic to me.
