This is Part 3 of my Steamy Java 1999 DVD. The other 3 parts of this DVD will also be available on RU-vid. I hope that young (and old) Indonesian railfans will be able to see and enjoy this DVD. The full DVD has footage of Wringinanom, Semboro, Asembagus, De Maas (now closed), Kebonagung, Merican, Purwodadi and the Ambarawa rack railway. All the mills featured had real, working steam in 1999.

STEAMY JAVA '99 Seventy five minutes of Steamy Java-not coffee but sugar-mill and rack-steam engines. This video was shot on Rob Dickinson's 1999 Java tour. Wringinanom This mill could produce some of the more memorable action in Java especially when both No. 6 and 7 were in use and steam was working on the south line. A relatively brief visit on this trip gives footage of the steam engine shed with both locos in steam on shed, diesel action on cripple 'lori' (cane wagon) recovery, an ash train and a short cane train as well as No. 6 heading for the mill around sunset with a full load to the sound of the Muslim call to prayer. The animal that darts across the track is probably a mongoose. The still photographers had headed for the beach and/or an early beer but the beach and beer will always be there... The shed shots include a good view of a Luttermöller axle designed to allow tight curves to be negotiated. This mill is now dieselized. Semboro This mill was having a disastrous year all round and the cane yard was almost full of unused, empty cane lori2 . The two fireless continue to handle what mill shunts there are, diesels handle the field work and processed sugar movements and no conventional steam has been used all season! Jung 0-6-0 No. 29 took out our special train and we found a cane train to put it on for a runpast. This is a wonderful, extensive system with considerable double track. It would be a great shame if the workable mallets stored in the shed never go to the fields again. Some of these (the O&K mallets) were prepared for the season and never used. The D&B mallets and the 0-4-2T have not been used for some time. No change at this mill. Asembagus Asembagus turned out No.5 on a special box van train to Jangkar Port. On the return trip we passed a diesel on the actual bagged sugar train.. The first runpast has Rob at the regulator showing them how to do it! No change at this mill. De Maas We first see No. 4 which was in steam as reserve power do a little arranged shunting. This is followed by views of the mill stationary engines and milling equipment. Several days later we had No. 3 on a chartered cane train. This was something Rob had been working on for several years and was the first confirmed use of steam on line work since 1990. This mill has closed. Kebonagung We got very lucky as we found No. 10 at Jameargo ready to depart with loaded lori2. The crew gave us some great run pasts and we had a good go at the street running through Bumiayu with a diesel on loads bringing up the rear. We went back to see No. 5 which was waiting for the loads to come off the temporary track. A derailment meant that we went back to the hotel for a beer instead of waiting for the (after dark) departure. Kebonagung closed most of it’s field lines including those seen in this footage. The mill is dieselized. Merican Merican only has rails from the truck loading yard to the mill but it is famous for it's night time fireworks. Despite having to set the camera on the ‘candlelight’ setting, this still produced some memorable pictures. No change at this mill. Purwodadi The sequence shows the finished sugar bagging process and the locomotive depot workshop. This mill also only has work from the truck yard to the mill. No change at this mill. Ambarawa Frequent tourist charters doing Borobodor from Semarang mean that the line is thriving. We had two special trains, the first using ex-West Sumatra rack tank E10 60. This loco can't use the rack at present but its rack gear is away for repair. Maybe year 2002 visitors will see it on the rack. The second special was with B25 02. This is the lesser used of the two B25 and as it struggled to get to the top of the climb, you could see why. A tourist train was due to run in the afternoon. I have included digital stills of all the locos in the Ambarawa museum. For the record, they are: BB1012, B2711, B5210, B2014, B5112, B2220, C2001, C1704, C1140, C1240, CC5029, C2407, C2821, C2728, C5101, C1603, C1801, C5417, D5106, F1002, D1002 (where the letter is the number of driven axles, B = 2, C=3, etc. and the first two letter represent the class, under 50 = tank loco, 50 and over = tender loco. Thus B2711 is an 0-4-2T and CC5029 is a 2-6-6-0 mallet.) The three locos dumped on shed are those that arrived at Ambarawa after the crane which positioned the other locos had come and gone: C1412, C1507, C2301 The rack locos (all in working order except no rack gear on the E10 at present) are: B2502/3, E1060 I thoroughly recommend Rob Dickinson as the best person to show you working steam in Java. He leads an annual 3-week tour of Java. His next tour will be July/August 2005. You can contact him for details at: For more details, see Rob’s extensive web pages on Indonesia dialspace.dial.pipex.com/steam/asia.htm#Indon My own website also has details of steam railway operations especially narrow gauge as well as other DVDs available: homepage.ntlworld.com/john.raby1/ John Raby jraby@waitrose.com Update 2016 - The above was written in 2005 and things will have changed. Thank you. Good summary of where some of the Kebonagung locos can be seen today. A pity none or workable but at least they have survived.

Minute 4:00 to 4:06, you got Rob in the video there. Maybe you should've cut that one out.

This was an 'in joke' at the time. Rob actually ran through my video 3 times in that one take. I showed all 3 as stills on my web page. When it came to the edit, I left one of them in. Anyway, life isn't all serious. We had fun at Kebonagung - something you can't do now.

Indeed, fortunately, none was in bright sunlight as the train went past. Just imagine, this is a Steamy Java DVD where the offcuts at the other locations could probably have made up another DVD of almost equal quaity.
