This is my third installment of "My Biplane Journey". If you have missed my last two episodes of the journey please go back to volume 1 where we start off in an N3N in Lincoln CA. We progress through the two days spent with Andy flying the N3N and we then go down to Columbia CA to fly the #vintageaircraft #Stearmanbiplane my buddy Chris Miller has where we pick here in the this video about flying the famous Stearman.
I wish that I had more time to obtain more good flying footage for this one but I just did not want to take away from what I was really trying to do, train. Adding all the cameras creates another level of focus and training always takes a precedent over the cameras.
You have been warned. This video has more talking than my usual videos but I think you just might learn a few things while listening to Chris go through various pre flight inspections for his #Stearman. Cotter pin, cotter pin, cotter pin.
Chris's aircraft is a stock 220 with 2 ailerons. The one you see here later in the video is mine with a Jacobs 275. Its an incredible aircraft and I feel extremely lucky to own one. The history alone on these aircraft is something else. 10,000 Stearman were made. Around 3000 are still flying today. This was a primary training aircraft for all of those that went over seas to fight the Germans in WWII. I think about all of those that trained in these vary aircraft and went to war and all of those that didnt return home. The nostalgia is incredible.
I truly hope that I can take everyone I know for a ride in this piece of history. There is nothing like flying in an open cockpit biplane.
Last mention here, make certain to visit Hangar 180 in Lewiston ID if you ever have a chance. The aircraft they have inside their hangar doors are simply next level on every detail. If you ever find yourself in the area make certain to look them up! Big shout out goes to my trainer and Hangar 180s check pilot Jered Segebartt. He checked me out in my new aircraft here. You will see out first landing was off airport over looking the Snake River! Nothing like off airport flying in the Stearman.

Kevin, you are the only one doing videos on biplanes (Stearman and N3N). Your Flying Cowboy videos are fun to watch, but the Stearman/biplane niche is quite unique and highly enjoyable.....at least from another Stearman guy's perspective. I'm really looking forward to more videos of that beautiful Pete Jones Stearman. Even after hundreds. of hours in a Stearman, every flight is a training flight, at least for me, as they are always teaching you something. So, no need to change your description....ha ha.

Every flight is training no doubt! I'm learning so much. The light acro is a blast. Every landing still feels like my first one :)

Kevin, Very cool series of videos. I learned to fly Stearmans in 2017 before taking over the care of my godfathers 1941 Stearman. It is the most exhilarating flying I’ve done. Every flight is special and unique in its own way and it amazes me how you can feel the history in every flight. Maybe our paths will cross someday and we can Stearman together. Blue sky’s and tail winds to you!

Very happy for you Kevin, that airplane is a showpiece. Beautiful, just beautiful. One thing I remember about my ride in that Starduster was how much open cockpit changed the feeling, the connection, to the environment, it is a lot like the difference between a convertible and a hardtop...just makes it that much more real. Still doing the knee Therapy, they are balking at the replacement now, but I still hope to hook up with you this fall.

Much safer and you'll be setting a good example about the importance of following the rules for the aviators who enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing the awesome content!

Beautiful bird there Kevin , love the videos. Just curious what is the cruise speed with your new bird and being an open cockpit are there any altitude limitations? I would guess air temp and oxygen would be 2 of the limiting factors.
@Bigtirepilot

About a 100/105mph. No real limitations. Not as cold as one would think but you do need to bundle up

Why is the upper plane of the sterman more advanced than the lower plane?
@adolforosado

If you can fly a Stearman, you can fly anything.
@joejody7814
@joejody7814 2 года назад
Actually, the authorities say if you can handle a Stearman on the ground you can handle anything. Flying one is easy. By the way ... On the ground means any moment you touch any of the 3 wheels to the ground. Double that with a hard surface. Triple that with a xwind.

I have a question about bi wings. Are the wings at the same angle of attack or will the upper (or Lower) wings stall before the other? Sorry if it sounds like a stupid question. ~jd
@Bigtirepilot
@Bigtirepilot 4 года назад
That's a good question! Same AOA!
@joejody7814
@joejody7814 2 года назад
The upper wing is set at 4 positive the lower 3 positive. The horiz stab is at 3 positive and it is a lifting section. The results because of the low pitching moment airfoil naca2013 is gorgeous. Little trim work required in flight and stall is very positive as top wing further ahead of cg. Go get some time in one.

At 11:05 can anyone tell me what he means “we run a clean kit on it”?
@Bigtirepilot
@Bigtirepilot 2 года назад
Clean allows the oil to flow into a 5 gallon can instead of collect in the cylinders. Oil then get put back in before the next flight instead of creating possible hydraulic lock
