'Steel Magnolias' was based on a true story. Actor and writer Robert Harling wrote the play based on the true story of his sister, Susan Harling Robinson, who died from diabetic complications. This is one of the only movies that can make me laugh and cry at the same time.

I actually made the decision for my wife when it was determined that the doctors couldn't help her. Her family knew I would do what was best for her and my wife and I had talked about what we wanted if we were only going to be kept alive by machines. I cannot express what it meant to have her family's trust in that moment. I will also never get over having to make the decision to give my wife peace and let her go. It is something you live with forever.

I feel ya, brother. I had to go through the same thing two years ago. Though we weren't married yet, the family had come to the decision to pull the plug but they wanted me to have the final say. I agreed. I held her as she passed away. If I live to be a hundred I NEVER. WANT. TO. DO. THAT. AGAIN! I have no doubt we did the right thing. Had she survived her stroke, she would have lost the use of her hands and because of sepsis, she would have lost her left leg up to the hip. She wouldn't have wanted to live like that. But I miss her so much and it's been so hard trying to go on, but I'm fighting! She wouldn't want me moping around.

If you loved Olympia Dukakis as Clairee, you've really got to see her Oscar winning performance as Rose in Moonstruck. The cast also includes Cher, who also won an Oscar, in one of her most amazing roles. It also won best screenplay and was nominated for best picture, best supporting actor and best director. I refused glassed when I found out I needed them in 8th grade, 1975. I got contacts... hard lenses were the only ones available and they hurt so much. They did come in amazing colors, so I had deep blue eyes with red instead of white eyeballs. They popped out easily and we're expensive so, yes, everything stopped so the search for the missing lense could go on. I switched to glasses due to the discomfort until soft lenses came out in the 80s. Those were amazing. They even came out with some you could wear a couple weeks at a time, what a blessing to wake and see a clock in middle of night without having to search for glasses. They were removed from market due eye infections. I eventually had to stop contacts about 10 years ago due to dry eyes and autoimmune diseases. Now I'm going to get to have good eyesight without glasses due to cataracts...

One of the main points was portraying the strength of the women. The author, "Shelby's" brother, wanted to tell about all the strong women in his life, and how they handled the death of his sister. This is how the movie got the name "Steel Magnolias." It's about being feminine and being strong.

@daleb1279
@daleb1279 Год назад
What I also love from this movie's story is, they were shooting the movie, it was hot where they were shooting I think in Georgia, it had been a long day and everyone was kind of grumbling about it, and I believe it was Julia Roberts who said she saw Dolly sitting on a swing and just swinging away seemingly happy as could be, and she went over to her and said, why are you not grouchy like all the rest of us, and Dolly told her, I dreamed all my life about being a star and singing and acting in movies, and my dream has come true, so why would I be b-ing when my dream came true. That is Dolly Parton in a nutshell, she is thankful for the blessings given which we should all remember to be.

This movie is so multilayered that I always pick up something different every time I watch it. On my 3rd or 4th time, I realized that Spud was actually in a major depression because of employment issues. I kinda wish y’all had included the scene where Spud offers to go to Shelby’s funeral with Truvy, because I took that to be his being shocked out of his depression and realizing you have to live life and love your loved ones because you only get one chance. Dolly’s reacting in the scene was priceless. Truvy was getting her husband back. Even though it is close to the end of the movie, Spud’s demeanor is more positive after this. Loved your reaction to this movie.
@RhetoricalThrill
@RhetoricalThrill Год назад
Yes! Hardly anyone catches that. He comes off as neglectful and closed off because we're only seeing Truvy's perspective. When you look closer you can see that he is deep, deep in it, and it's even sadder because Truvy has no idea what to do and probably thinks it's her fault.

One of my favorite movies. My mom's symptoms started half way through her pregnancy with me. She received her terminal glioblastoma diagnosis shortly after my birth and chose to spend whatever time she had left at home with me & my brother who was 1.5 years old. I got a total of 18 months with her before she passed away at home with us. I carry her with me always but this movie along with Stepmom(also starring Julia Roberts) & Terms of Endearment (also starring Shirley MacClain) are the 3 movies that I watch when my grief gets overwhelming. I'm a crier anyway but when I NEED a good cleansing ugly grief cry, I watch those movies. Somehow I always feel closer to my mom & better - like she's curled up in bed with me watching along too. If you haven't seen those other 2 movies I definitely recommend them!

When Jay was so relieved that the surgery went well, I just thought, "Oh, wow, he's REALLY not going to like what comes next." Type 1 diabetes, which Shelby had, can be extremely dangerous. This movie has so many Oscar winners… Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia, Dukakis, and Julia Roberts. I would love for you to look up each one of these women, and see their Oscar winning movies. For Sally Field it’s either places in the heart, or Norma Rae. The latter being my favorite. Shirley MacLaine is a famous actress, singer, dancer. She won her Oscars was one for Terms of Endearment. That is a another tearjerker but an excellent movie. Olivia Dukakis won an Oscar for Moonstruck, that also starred Cher in her Oscar winning role. My favorite Julia Roberts movie has to be Pretty Woman. However, she won her Oscar for Erin Brockovich. You can’t go wrong checking out these movies! Great reaction, as usual!

The insulin reaction at the start of the movie is fairly accurate. I have been a type 1 diabetic since 19. I'm 63 now. Back then the insulin used was pig insulin and that stuff could put you on another planet. The DNA recombinant they use now is a lot easier to deal with. They can still be scary sometimes.

It was about his sister that died from diebetes when she-was a young woman. After the movie, it was turned into a play. Natchitoches will forever be remembered for this movie because this is a tourist town and a college town(NSU), and many tourist come here to see the locations where this movie was filmed😁😁 We have many Bed and Breakfast homes here, and one of them is The Steel Magnolia House, which was Shelbys family's home😊💜

I do love Dolly in this film though. I also love Olympia Dukakis and especially Shirley MacLaine (these two had some of the best and funniest scenes). Darryl Hannah is also good, but she is the weakest link of the ladies. 9 to 5, would be a great reaction! It has such a stacked cast, and such a fun & unique story. It's also has a fantastic peek, at what life was like in the work force, back in 1980. Pretty Woman, was a big movie back in the day, when it came out. I'm gonna be honest, I tried watching it recently, and there's only a few memorable scenes...the rest of the movie is largely forgettable, or slow. I kept waiting for it to pick up, or get interesting. Maybe it just hits different, 30+ years later? Idk. Instead of Pretty Woman, I would suggest, The Runaway Bride, if you're looking for a fun, fast, and touching, Julia Roberts - Richard Gere, movie. Much better performance from Gere, and far more enjoyable. Again, in my humble opinion. (sounds like a good opportunity for a movie poll)😉

It's frightening, you feel like you're alone battling a person whose in a different mindset who constantly pushes away your attempts to save their life. As a Type I diabetic.. you are correct in your assessment. I don't have too many episodes, but when I do... yikes. It usually manifests into anger, throwing a box of orange juice--when I can't get it open... all the way to complete blackouts. Sadly my other half died 5 years ago- so I'm alone with my dogs now. Not an ideal situation, to be sure, but I have no interest in having someone here, nor leaving my home ( I love my dogs). The newfies saved me once, from a blackout episode- but that's another story.
