Steel on Belvoir Ducks (Dave Carrie Shooting) 

Another nice little video dave, I’ve been shooting steel from the very beginning of the ban on lead on the foreshore and one thing that I find happens is you’ll shoot birds that don’t give any indication at being hit and will fly on some distance before coming down. I would say this is due to steel passing straight through the quarry because of the hardness of the pellet thus not delivering the impact joules of energy. The cartridges have come a very long way but if you get those birds you know that you’ve hit but give no indication, keep your eye on them a bit longer.👍🏼

I think that the cartridge manufacturers have done a great job to improve steel loads, I was particularly impressed with the Gamebore loads - and the quality of their service . Well done on the water! Keep them coming Dave!

Excellent shooting again David, nice to see someone excel in there chosen sport. I think steel shot would be a step in the right direction for game shooting really . I would guess game would be easier to process when shot with steel shot as steel can be detected and removed easier than lead . Getting more game in the diets of none shooting people would safe guard shootings future. My family have been raised on eating game as my wife and I struggled to make ends meet ( as many working people do) .Game made a welcome and cheap / free addition to are house hold. Both my boys were in the beat line at 4yrs old, (sat on my shoulders half the day😀 ) and although they don’t want to hunt or shoot they still love to eat all game as they understand it’s had some quality of life, however short, which is more than can be said for the poor chickens and pigs that are on the list of budget meats. If game shooting is to survive it needs to adapt and sell itself to the masses ,get it on the dinner plates of the public/ cheap/ free range and healthy and game shooting will have a future otherwise I think it’s on borrowed time.

Brilliant film Dave, I shot some Eley 4s hydrowad, only at high clays, but they performed very well. Let’s hope they do the business in the field

In the US we were made to use steel back in 1991. I disliked it then and dislike it now. Many a fine shotgun was ruined or retired by steel , now Bismuth is better but at $57-$61 dollars US for 25 shells its a tad expensive.

Dave I’ve shot steel at ducks going on about 30 years here in the states. I started with #2 steel then switched to #3 steel about 8 years ago. Can’t really tell any difference at all. Generally shoot with an imp cylinder choke occasionally switch to a mod choke. I try and keep shots no longer than about 40-45 yards max for clean kills.

We use 70 mm cartridges #2 35 grams all the time. Very good for large ducks and geese. Have to tidy your lead for head and neck placement. Body hits will have birds fall out of sight.

I don't shoot many if any ducks, so didn't have much experience of steel until this year. I've been using steel cartridges in 4 and 5 shot sizes from Gamebore and Eley on pigeons and crows all spring, and i do find they are find up to 30/35 yards, but passed that I wasn't not happy with the amount pricked birds i got, So I patterned then through 1/2 choke from 20 to 60 yards and the pattern told a story, Very thin patterns beyond 35 yards useless passed 40 on a small target like pigeons crows and partridge. I'm reluctant to go for the small shot sizes of 7 shot as i feel they might not have the hit power at longer ranges. Your thoughts on that please. For me pest control should be exempt from the lead ban only used for meat that is entering the food chain.

Well shot. Were you using Black Gold High Performance steel and if so with what load and with what choke? I think with lead you usually shoot tight chokes but half choke is the maximum for steel.

I would use bismuth or tungsten matrix since my guns are not steel proof.

The drive on the pontoon was amazing, because for me it is hard enough to get some ducks at flat land, but to hit anything on this wobbly raft is just brilliant. Absolutely fantastic drive there mate. I love watching you guys shooting on Belvoir. I go carp fishing at Belvoir Lakes and Knipton, it's a fantastic site when you lads are shooting. I personally have just started shooting myself and slowly getting into the sport, I'm currently joining Orston Shooting Ground. Only clay pigeon shooting mind it a wonderful hobby and sport. Anyone got a minute to explain to me how I could go about getting into duck shooting? Always been interested since I was small and I love the idea of a man and his dog going out hunting. I’ve never shot before but I really would love to get started I’m 26 from the north wales area but I just don’t k is where to start as I don’t know anyone involved in the sport. Any help would be amazing thank you!

Great shooting videos very intreasting in all aspect of shooting fron beaters to gun well done

I have enjoyed your videos for many years now. After watching you I purchased a Moruku MK60 GR5 "High Pheasant" from Churchills a few years back. Cant shoot it like you but have fun with it on clays. Those fixed chokes are the real deal! Here in the States weve been shooting "non toxic" shot for waterfowl since 1992. Prior to that I shot lead for 34 years. In my experience steel is good to somewhere between 35 and 40 yards-call it 35 meters. Kent steel is very popular here. Of course you can shoot 3.5" shells with BBB's T's etc., but thats not for me. I find that 1 1/8 to 11/4 oz 3's and 4's at 1350 to 1400 work at that range without unnecessary recoil. You need a good dog as steel does cripple. It penetrates well but does not kill as effectively as lead. I was reminded of the effectiveness of lead when I went to Argentina and shot 11/8 lead 5's on Rosie's. DOA. Very few cripples. These days I use Steel in the bottom barrel and Bismuth in the top, for longer shots. On your high pheasants I think you will end up using high quality Bismuth for anything beyond 40 yards.

After being a country sport likening person for the past 40 odd years. Having shot gun gun since a 16 year old. I will be happy to see this type of shooting being stopped. Sorry to upset some of you but a guy on a marsh shooting duck for the plate is the only shooting of duck I could ever support.

Think you have just proved steel is very effective with this video. Some seriously long ducks killed there. If you need to go even longer there is Tungsten cartridges. You should have a go wildfowling on the foreshore.

Once again, Dave Carrie never fails to deliver a fantastic video. Fast and furious shooting from the pontoon; a superb left / right double at the 6:10 mark, not to mention a real short retrieve at 6:44! As noted by others below, we've been mandated to shooting steel and non-tox on waterfowl for well over three decades now in the US and the loads have improved immeasurably from the beginning. As you've seen, go up a couple of shot sizes from lead, and if the gun is in the right place the bird will surely fall. Thanks for this one and best regards as always, Ed.

Great film, Dave. I would be interested in your thoughts on the speed of the cartridges compared to my favourite load, Black Gold Game. I am keen to try the unleaded Gamebore option in my Mirokus. We won't be on duck but on pheasant and partridge so shooting 4s and 5s.

Dave as a man who I believe likes to challenge himself in shooting the tallest birds possible having watched all of your videos, does it not worry you that the days you enjoy so much and get the best sport from, such as Warter priory, brigands and all the well known tall bird pheasant shoots will just not have the same appeal, as them monsters you like to shoot 60 yards plus, are just not going to be killable with steel shot? I also prefer to challenge myself in the shooting field in what I call proper sport and shoot and kill targets further out so to speak, and the thought of having to use steel shot is really making me consider wether shooting will be for me anymore. I have no interest in killing game 30-40 yards out, that’s not sport in my opinion. Best wishes Dave and keep up the cracking videos.
