For resale value it makes no sense to build a garage without a garage door. But if you don't need a garage door then framing the opening and installing something more normal, more insulated and more secure makes sense. So in the latest vLog follow along as Dad and I install our new shops steel french doors.

Use a flat file on the leading edge of the receiver plate - little bit at a time so you creep up on a perfect (rattle free) fit. :-)

A landlord we know installed these after a break in. 10 of them on the site. On CCTV 4 guys with sledge hammers started to pound away and after half an hour gave up. Broke in through the roof, just in time for the police to show up, cuffs at the ready. So we done away with our wooden doors and got these. Once you've done one it all makes sense. These are the best investment you can make, nothing beats physical security. Only issue with this company is no paper instructions and a poor online video, but the doors themselves are outstanding.

Someone said Heavy Metal French and I just had to mention Gorija. The heavy metal band from France. They’re pretty amazing if you’re into progressive sonic metal sound. Kind of like a heavy version of Tool.

Hi I had to laugh when you shouted at your dad, my cat was sat by the speakers, she had a dicky fit, jumped about a foot in the air and shot downstairs. She has just come back into the room and she is wondering around trying to figure it out as to where the loud noise came from

I might have looked to fit some skinny side lights on either side of the door to let in more light. I would think it would only minimally reduce the security of those awesome doors.

For the measurement w/o math, hold the frame to one side of opening, measure from frame to side of opening, fold end of tape to that measurement and read number at the center of the fold (subtract @ 1/4" for clearance). Always use P. T. OR redwood for bottom plates! Put some lipstick on the striker, hold lever down and close door, holding door closed flip the lever several times then hold the handle down and open door. The lipstick will now show you where the hang up is, file off the offending part as others have said (make sure it was installed correctly first). French doors usually have "lites" or windows without lites they are normally called double doors, local dialects may differ.

agree with all except redwood---great for bug resistance but too easy to split. i would do PT as you suggest. also put tarpaper under bottom plate 2x4

I purchased the same doors also. No directions at all. This video was a great help,but, where the outside frame mates up…is backwards. The way the video shows where the frame mates perfectly around the 4x4, it should be turned around where it overlaps the door side of the frame. This way the adjustment screw that are inside can provide the full range of extension. Also there won’t be any gap between those frame members. VisPro, c’mon guys, how hard would it be for simple directions?

At time 14:33/15:41 You are pointing to the area where the locks go in. The top catch you are showing on the opposite door appears to go in the bottom where you finger was pointing. Something is upside down. I wasn't able to see the doors installed. But it could be as simple as the factory installed the plate (you were pointing to)) upside down.

With the hinge pins on the outside, unless they are welded in place. All someone has to do is knock-out your hinge pins and the door can be removed, locked or not. The 4x4's on either side of your door should have been anchored to the concrete with post brackets. Otherwise, your door will eventually start to move your posts around on the bottom plate.

I had a similar thought as K Y. I'm not at all a door expert (nor a carpenter of any kind), but it struck me that I usually see doors like that with the hinges on the inside and the slat that covers the space between the doors (I'm sure there's a name for it) on the outside. I'm sure you all did a better job than I could have without instructions, but that does seem odd.

Thanks for making this video. Recently purchased the same doors from Vis-Pro. Also came without any real worthwhile instructions. Would have been nice to see the assembly on the door locks, but what you did show is very helpful. My doors came sandwiched between two 4x8 composite plywood boards. Weight was between 200-300lbs. Thanks again.

1) Measure width of door and frame. 2) Measure width of hole in wall. 3) Subtract 1. from 2. 4) Devide by 2. 5) Build frame with number from 4. as width on each side. How hard is this. :D It must be due to that strange, non-metric, system you are using. :D

Just a WAG... any chance there is some adjustment in the stationary door's stop? Often, but not always, when you locate a receiver plate and the latch on a new door, you do it with no stops in place. Then you can add the stops to make the fit perfect.

On my door I have to raise the handle after closing it. There was an adjustment on the hinge too but yours doesn't look to have that

It's useless to have a metal door, if the walls are made of wood, I would rip off the wooden wall instead to break the metal door... Please correct me if I am wrong

What you would do and what would happen in real life are different. Most thieves prefer ease of access over excessive destruction and lots of noise.

This may have been pointed out already, plus it might help with the lock alignment. With security doors the hinges are designed to be on the inside to prevent them from being tampered with. You have the hinges outside which could also be why the locking holes are slightly misaligned.

@@totherarf Yep the big saw might be an issue but the small lathe and 1000's in small tools would go through easily and quickly. I worry about the same thing and do have security on my shop. Hopefully they will too. Bill

Those two short sill plates should have been pressure treated. Any untreated wood in contact with concrete will rot. Usually required by building codes.
