If we design a steel structure in STAAD using traditional design approach, then we need to manually review the design results and change the section size so that the optimum section is used. This process is time consuming, also it is very hard to find out the most economic section by trial and error method. Proper optimization of the entire structure not only reduces the overall steel weight but also ensure proper distribution of forces.
In this video, I have covered how we can optimize any steel structure iteratively with the help of advanced design commands present in STAAD and find the most economic section for any member. This is the overview session with a comparison between the traditional approach and advanced design approach.

Hii suro Nice explanation Please add this points in next session 1. How we will use Box section properties by using 'select' command 2. Can user table sections will used for for fixed group 3. How we can use "personal section data base " for select/select optimise command 4. Is any provision for tapered section optimization tool in staad Hope so you will cover this in next session 👍

Thanks for your suggestion Ganesh. I have already planned to include point 1 to 3 in the third part of this series and then I will post multiple videos on Tapered member design. In next part, I will cover the correct sequence of different design and analysis commands along with few other major points for optimization.

But in the case of the Tapered section we can't use this select command as my understanding because we play with the diff dimensions of one selected member

Yes, for tapered section, optimization or section selection process is not available. It is available only for uniform profile sections, including built-up section with uniform profile.

Sir will the select, select optimised command work for tapered sections?

If you define a tapered section from Define >Tapered I option, then that section cannot be optimized using SELECT command. But there is a trick for section selection with custom shapes which I will discuss in the next part of Steel Optimization series.

I am a bit confused with your query. I have assigned fixed support in this model, not sure where you noticed pinned support. Also pin support is very common for any steel structure, infect pinned base plate is commonly used in several projects rather than fixed base plate due to several advantages.
