In the previous tutorial, we talked about the nine different types of steel that exist. We also talked about the SAE 4 digit standard, which is the way these 4 different types of steel are classified.
We will discuss SAE steel grades as well as steel types and steel types explained.

Excellent video. No BS at the beginning, a whole bunch of great information, then the video ends. Spectacular. All RU-vid videos should be like this.

I am really hoping that you will continue this thread that you have started with the nine different types of Steel and explaining the different flavors and pros and cons with each one of them been wanting to learn this kind of thing for a long time and I think you are aggregating all the information in one source and that's really great

What kind of carbon is used? Coal? Amorphous carbon?
@AvivMakesRobots
@AvivMakesRobots 2 года назад
Possibly the allotrope of amorphous carbon.

Excuse me sir, i still don't understand. As i know,, carbon is more brittle than iron. But why when we mixture carbon and iron. It can be stronger and harder than pure iron?
@AvivMakesRobots
@AvivMakesRobots 3 года назад
Because the carbon molecules distribute themselves into the microstructure of the iron. When this happens, it changes the properties quite a lot. Steel is both harder and stronger than iron.

@@aryawicaksana3014 There are small gaps between the atoms that make up iron. These little gaps are called interstices. When carbon is added, the carbon fits in these tiny holes and that fills the holes, making the whole material more robust. I think it even goes as far as pushing against the atoms creating more pressure and therefore more strength. Check out steel microstructures.

What carbon steel would you recommend for making a cooking griddle? I'm looking to make one for my wife but not sure which type is food safe. Thank you.
@AvivMakesRobots

Sounds like an amazing project! All steels rust, so I believe it would ideally be made of stainless steel in the 200-400 category. This is to fit into the NSF standard for food equipment material.

Would steel with an SAE number of 1520 be good steel? From your Diagrams that would be Carbon steel with Manganese content of 1% - 1.65% and 2% Carbon. I have no understanding in the topic, is this good steel?
@AvivMakesRobots
@AvivMakesRobots 2 года назад
It completely depends on the application. This steel would be good for a flexible part that has some resistance to rusting. It would be terrible if you needed a strong steel for an injection mold tool.

How to mixture 0.5 % silicon? You mean kind like we making bread? We mixture flour, egg, water and butter?
@AvivMakesRobots
@AvivMakesRobots 2 года назад
Exactly! Just kidding... The elements need to be melted and then mixed.

So what grade of steel or combo of materials would resist the action of a Sawzall and angle grinder? What confounds a cutting blade? I'm trying to devise a way to defeat the catalytic converter dirtbags by beefing up a series of steel reinforcement tubes that would be welded on the exhaust pipe, any suggestions?
@AvivMakesRobots
@AvivMakesRobots Год назад
From what I've seen, they are made of stainless steel. This project seems like it will need a lot of simulation and tuning to get right. Check out all the simulations done on standard CCs. Can you explain more about this concept?
@dirtdogdigital3979
@dirtdogdigital3979 Год назад
@@AvivMakesRobots It's all about just slowing them down, if you make them work harder than a minute or so each cut (x2 cuts) they might move on. Some people take a regular SSteel tube and weld that on top of the pipe, on each side of the CAT. But I want to beef that up further by maybe putting something else inside the tube (like some 1/2 square and X long strips?) that will mess the blade up. Some materials I'm considering: tool steel, boron / cobalt? steel, titanium, or maybe even a titanium mesh or aluminum compound? to foul the blade. Some guys in Britain say that chicken wire can be effective ... Honestly, I don't know.
