I would never admit anything bad about my team. I'm a die to my grave a Steelers fan. But I just don't understand what has happen to our defense in the last few years. I blame Tomlin. I blame him for the most disgusting truth of my team. We can beat the best teams but we can also loose to the worst teams in the NFL. Makes no sense.

Colin Cowherd, are you kidding me? This is not a matter of whether or not Tomlin can be questioned it is the matter of disrespect with which he is being shown. Are there aspects of his coaching that can and/or should be called into question? Absolutely. But Terry Bradshaw didn't just say, "I don't think he's a great" he followed it with an emphasized "AT ALL" and then not only said, "I have no idea what he does" indicating his IGNORANCE but then still proceeded to called him a "Cheerleader guy". In 10 seasons he's not ending 1 season with a losing record, made it to the playoffs 70% of the time, won the division 50%, been to 2 super Bowls and won 1. Cheerleader guy? In the last 9 seasons only 5 teams had been to more than 1 Super Bowl appearance and only 1 team had more Super Bowl wins than the Steelers. Handed a Super Bowl team? As I recall that "Super Bowl team" he was "handed" went 8-8 the year before he took over. And guess what, Super Bowl teams don't last, players get older, slower and eventually retire, but before that, pretty much immediately players are lost to free agency to get bigger money elsewhere right after winning a Super Bowl. Now I'd like to address your cherry picked remarks about being in a division with the Cleveland Browns. I'll cherry pick my own stats that the AFC North is the only division in football that has had more than 1 team in it's division win a Super Bowl in the last 9 years. In the last 9 years and the 18 possible wild card winners, the AFC North has won half the wild card spots. Say what you will about Cincy IN the playoffs, they STILL a team that was good enough to consistently MAKE the the playoffs...6 times in the last 9 years. Which leads me into your comparative remarks regarding Brady and Manning dominating their divisions. You talk about the Cleveland Browns? How about the Dolphins, Bills and Jets for Brady? or the Titans, Texans and Jags for Manning (Raiders and Chargers when Manning was in the AFC west)? Tomlin, with Ben, went up against a division that saw the Bengals make the playoffs 6 times and the Ravens make the playoffs 6 times, the latter being a Super Bowl winner as well. Brady, he went up against a division that saw the Jets make the playoffs twice and Miami once, neither winning a Super Bowl. And while I don't have it exactly split out to the years Manning was with Indy vs. when he was in Denver, the combined totals of the other teams in those divisions making the playoffs during Mike Tomlin's time coaching the Steelers 6 times between the Texans, Titans and Jags and 7 times between the Chiefs and Chargers whereas Steelers division opponents went 12. So I would argue Tomlin's accomplishments were made while playing against the overall toughest division in the AFC and finally in regards to the AFC being the weaker conference, Tomlin is 24-13 against the NFC...."AT ALL"..."Cheerleader guy"...THAT'S why people are upset, not because Tomlin is above criticism, but because when he is criticized the commentary is beyond disrespectful for a guy who has accomplished what he has thus far and the fact remains, and his overall body of work as compared to the rest of the league, he is still a GOOD coach at minimum, but the way Terry Bradshaw speaks about him and the way you cherry pick stats, "critics" are treating him as tho he is a complete garbage coach and not as the good coach he is that has areas that can be debated and/or are in need of improvement....you ask if people will allow him to be criticized if he loses to Miami this weekend? I wonder if the likes of Terry Bradshaw or you Colin Cowherd will apologize the remarks and the justification of the remarks of "Cheerleader guy" if he Makes it to the AFC Championship game or even the Super Bowl?

Their defense got old and they went all raiders with the drafting and picked 4.39 lbs with no field awareness. They had to supercharge the offense to compensate for it. As for the Tomlin criticism, there's a speck of truth. He's not the best schemer or negotiator, but he's the glue guy. He motivates players, especially young underachieving skill players.

Tomlin inherited a Super Bowl team and took them to two Super Bowls winning one then the defense got old and had to be rebuilt and it is now rebuilt. Thank you media for lighting a fire under Tomlin and the rebuilt D. Steelers are back and you all are gonna' shut your damn mouths!

He says Brady dominated his division. Yeah, it's pretty easy when Miami, NY, and Buffalo are in the division. He says Manning dominated his division. Yeah, he had to beat Houston, Jacksonville, and Tennessee. Pittsburgh has to face Baltimore every year. Baltimore is better than all of those other teams almost every year.
@RoonGang09
@RoonGang09 7 лет назад
Also throughout most of Tomlin's career as the Steelers coach, the AFC North has been one of the toughest divisions to win. The Ravens (two Super Bowls) are a very tough team in that division man who you did not mention and the Bengals are at least a good regular season team. You put the Pats or the Colts when they were led by Manning in that division and they would have the same kind of success as the Steelers or worse.

Completely agree. Tomlin is nothing short of lucky. The drafting has been terrible the past few years as well. But look at it in the case of the players, they seem to like, respect, and ride with Tomlin. How would the players react if Tomlin is fired, and someone new is brought in to coach the team?
@jackrawlings5466

Colin is right, they've been getting a pass every year. But the biggest issue here is that he criticises the media for treating some people as untouchable then says no matter what happens this weekend "you wont criticise Big Ben, or Bell or Brown etc". If the Steelers lose, and Big Ben throws 5 picks, it's his fault. If the Steelers D gives up 30 points, it'll be their fault. I don't think this stuff will happen, but there's no point lining up scapegoats before the game.

This has to be one of the worst arguments I have ever heard. Talk about leaving logic at the door. Of course Brady and Manning won their divisions often with the likes of the Bills, Dolphins, Texans, Titans, Jaguars. Two of the worst divisions in football. They do not have a Baltimore Ravens in their division that Colin conveniently did not mention. Tomlin is certainly not the greatest coach but when old Terry acted like Mike Mccarthy was some great coach was a huge problem. Tomlin and Mccarthy are the same on paper ffs. Bad way to start the show today.

The Dolphins are a good team. Adam Gase might finally be the right guy to make the Dolphins relevant again but you are sending out a back-up QB albeit a very good back-up, against the loaded steelers. Pittsburgh, there is zero excuses for you to lose this game. You have Ben, Bell, Brown all healthy, more than enough to get the job done in front of your great home crowd. If Pit loses this game, you have question the coaching staff.
@bherber
@bherber 7 лет назад
Definitely a fair analysis by Colin. I have been a faithful Steelers fan since 1989. I think part of the problem is also the front office - GM, etc... We've put less of an emphasis on defense with the draft especially. The Steelers have historically acquired talent through the draft, not free agency. Something is going on there. Either we aren't drafting as well or we've tended to draft more for the offense. Also you have to look at free agency taking players away. Steelers players are one of the most sought after for free agents, but also some of the most unsuccessful after they leave the Steelers.

Tomlin came in and won a superbowl. You mention the Browns what about one of the best defenses in history with the Ravens. Cincinnati wasn't too shabby either and you still have to get through New England. Injuries his running back being suspended Ben Roth raping 2 women and the pressure of having one of the most highest thought of franchises and fan bases in sports. I haven't been watching football for about 5 years. Started again this year. Last season I watched was the season where the Steelers lost against GB in the Superbowl. I would definitely agree that Tomlin is not a great coach. The game that proved it to me was the Cowboys game this year. If Tomlin had not gone for 2 acouple times I think they would've won. The Cowboys are a great team this year but I think that game was won by Tomlin giving up too many free points.

IIFester yea because his risk can cause him a lot. Tomlin is a type of coach that is willing to take a risk. sometimes it pays off well and sometimes it turns into tragic. Like last year he beat the chargers by having bell doing a wildcat play and he won the game with a walk off win.
@thesearchlightsCW
@thesearchlightsCW 7 лет назад
Context of risk is important. In dire situations, yes, gotta take risks. But if my memory serves me right those first couple two point tries were early. Forcing his hand to do more 2 point attempts later, failing too. In that situation I feel risk is justified. Ultimately I am not a head coach but early in the game is seems reasonable to take the points. Hopefully this attitude helps in the playoffs rather than hurts the Steelers.

Cowherd does raise some good points... Tomlin was handed a Super Bowl team when he took over. I completely agree with the Tom Coughlin comparison as well. Also, Tomlin's had numerous current and former head coaches on his staff. As a Steelers fan, I can agree that they have underachieved and Tomlin will be questioned if they lose to Miami. However, Cowherd plays the Bradshaw interview twice and does not even mention the most important thing that he said. He sees it as calling him an average coach, but is there anything more disrespectful you can say about a coach than comparing him to a cheerleader? C'mon Cowherd. Cowherd completely misses the ball on a few points as well. How can you call out Tomlin's tripping incident (intentional or not) then go on to compare him to a guy like Pete Carroll with complete disregard with what transpired with him at USC? If he's going to throw stones, at least keep it consistent. Furthermore, I find his comparison of Ben and the AFC North to Brady and the AFC East and Manning and the AFC South humorous. He could not have taken that point seriously. Even having the Browns in the division, the AFC North has been consistently one of the best (if not the best) division in football since Tomlin has been the head coach (outside of this year). Even with The Browns in the division you still have The Ravens with a Super Bowl win and numerous playoff appearances and The Bengals who consistently make the playoffs. You could say "Well thats because Ben doesn't dominate the division." But, you only have to look back to 2 years ago when all 3 teams made the playoffs. Outside of the Jets and Titans for a couple of years, Brady and Manning have played in below average divisions. Even though some of the stuff Cowherd says is sometimes true and a lot of the times ridiculous, I can't stop watching his show. Clearly, he's doing something right.

Bradshaw's comments are out of line not because he's critical of Tomlin, but rather because he referred to Tomlin as a "cheerleader guy," which is disrespectful. Bradshaw has no idea what happens at the Steelers' practice or locker room. Bradshaw even says, "I don't know what he does." Sure Tomlin can be criticized. His teams have seemed poorly prepared at times, some of his decisions are questionable. In his defense though, his career record is better than Noll or Cowher. He has not had a losing season. The Steelers are in a division with Cleveland, the worst team in the league, but the Ravens have been to the Super Bowl a few times in the past several years, and the Bengals have been a playoff team. A few years ago, the Steelers, Ravens and Bengals were all in the playoffs. Brady dominates a division with--hold your laughter--the Jets, the Bills and the Dolphins. The Steelers have gone to the playoffs and lost because of multiple injuries. Again, it's fair to say that Tomlin is not the greatest of all time, but Bradshaw's comment was just ridiculous.

Oooohhh...that's a HOT take! Above average offensive lines? Great running backs? The line they won with in 2008 was hot garbage. The line from 2010 was even worse. They won the 2008 SB with a pedestrian running game and got to 2010 after their franchise QB had to sit out the first 4 games. He's been with the team long enough to entirely rebuild that roster. Current coaches in the NFL: top tier all by himself is Belichick. Second is Tomlin, Carroll, McCarthy, Harbaugh. That's it. Those guys aren't "cheerleaders". They aren't "nice". The only reason we don't call them great is Belichick. The problem with Bradshaw's criticism is that it was plain old stupid. It was shallow. It's intent was to generate clicks and conversation. If he'd have offered something smart and insightful, there wouldn't have been an issue. Pittsburgh sports media rips Tomlin...but they're usually smarter than Bradshaw.

Is Colin insinuating that the American main stream sports media is ultra liberal to the point where you can't criticize a poorly performing coach because of his ethnicity??

Winning the division 50% of the time when you have another team that has been on your level for quite some time is still impressive. If Steelers had Brady's division... Different story.

Wait wait wait? Tomlin had everything handed to him? What about chip Kelly's first year with the eagles? A good nick foles, desean jackson, and lesean McCoy? He went to the playoffs ONCE with them, and now he's not even a head coach anymore. Kelly had stars handed to him, but couldn't even use them.

People were critical of Terry Bradshaw comments cause of his choice of words. Tomlin deserve some criticism like when the steelers get bounced in the second round and etc. but Bradshaw said Mike McCarthy is a great coach and called Mike Tomlin a cheerleader guy, McCarthy has one of best QBs to ever play this game in Aaron Rodgers. Big Ben is good but he's not Aaron Rodgers good. and McCarthy has been to the super bowl once. Tomlin has been there twice and i can argue that the AFC North is a tougher division than the NFC South. So for Bradshaw to say McCarthy is a better coach than Tomlin is ridiculous.

it wasnt about not calling tomlin a great coach, because you don't know until his career is over to make that judgement on someone. i mean he may end up being a great or or he may just end up being an ok coach when it's all said and done, history will decide that. the problem was calling him a cheerleader which was down right disrepectful. no coach should ever be called that, because as a coach you have to do alot of prep work to get your players ready each week with countless hours of video studying, coming up with new play schemes, putting players in the the best position to matchup with their opposition each game and making sure the players are conditioned so that they are ready to play each game. not to mention the pressure they have on them to win games, because if things go bad the coach is the first person to get blamed for it. this is why bradshaw was a player and never a coach.

I am a Steelers fan. Have been my entire life, and I love my tem. I am not prejudice against Mike Tomlin, but Terry Bradshaw is right. Mike Tomlin is by no means a terrible Coach, I mean he's the 3rd Steelers Coach to get 100 wins. But, he is also not great. I watched the Bill Cowher years, I have watched Tony Dungy as the Colts head Coach, I've watched Bill Belichick with the Patriots, and just honestly Mike Tomlin is not on that level. For all the reasons Colin is talking about.

I like Cowherd, even though I am a Redskins fan and should not, but what is he talking about here? Tomlin is not a great coach, he is a good coach who continuously has his team set up to make the playoffs, never has had a losing season. Coughlin, great coach, unfairly ousted, but he has had 10 losing seasons out of 20, including his last three. Missed the playoffs four seasons in a row, and coaches in NY, a big market where they expect a lot. Tomlin is in Pittsburgh where that team is everything. That is why Coughlin is unemployed, and Tomlin is one of the longest tenured coaches in the NFL.

The problem with black coaches is that they are soft on their players. I feel like they care more about being friends with their players rather than seeing them as subordinates. You almost never see a black coach chewing out their players. Both Tomlin and the Browns HC are like that but Tomlin has alot more talented players.

The criticism wasn't the problem, calling him a cheerleader was highly disrespectful. And idk what football Colin has been watching for the past 40 years but Ben Rothlisberger is barely a top 15 qb of the last 40 years let alone a top 20 player overall

Nick Saban didn't do a damn thing in the NFL, he's a great coach according to you. Jim Harbaugh hasn't won anything, yet he's a great coach according to you! Yet oddly enough, you don't seem to hold Mike Tomlin in that regard, even though he's a Superbowl winning head coach.

not only are the browns in the same division with the steelers but also joe flacco ray lewis was in the same division andy dalton; aj green the bengals and the ravens both always good teams so yes the steelers do not dominate the afc north all the time like the patriots dominate the afc east with miami bills and jets who rarely ever come close to the post season tomlin is above the average and would be seen as hi as belecheck if he was in the same division as miami jets and buffalo.

Thanks for the extra *motivation* this week Colin. The Steelers whoop the Dolphins to win a playoff game, which just happens to be their first playoff game with the Big Three all healthy. Now, they are the franchise with the most playoff wins in NFL *history.* Not to mention, they still have the most Super Bowl trophies...yep, let them keep on underachieving.

Steelers shouldn't lose to miami(Big Ben was playing hurt) or philly. The games down the stretch we close against weaker competition. He is a solid coach, but he doesn't really overcome adversity, and I doubt the steelers will ever finish 13-3, 14-2 with tomlin. I don't know if it's him or the team but they just have 2-3 awful games out of nowhere. Drop a tough game and a division game and you're likely the 2 seed and have to go on the road, and I don't think the steelers are a great road team

idk about you saying Big Ben is one of the top 20 players you have ever seen. That's very far fetched. You should blame the Steelers as a whole because they are the most underachieved team in the past 5 years. every year regarded by non fans as the super bowl favorites. Colin hit this one right on the head.

? was Ben only in his 3rd year as a starter when Tomlin became the coach? Didn't we go 8-8 before 08 season. Since he was handed a team, the record should've been better. So somewhere the team had to be coach or they wouldn't won the Super Bowl in 08 and made appearance against Green Bay. I'm just saying.
