Been a STEELERS fan for 50 yrs. Have lived thru Noll, Cowher and now Tomlin. A few things are crystal clear right now: 1. This team lacks the necessary leadership to ensure things like what happened in the last 5 days does not happen on a team currently holding a playoff spot in December. Thats 100% on MT. Not holding people (like the diva WRs) accountable fir bad behavior and lack of effort is something the rest of the teams see’s and it divides them and becomes an insurmountable hurdle. Thats where they are right now. 2. Apparently nobody on this team is capable of consistent QB play and or play calling that provides an offense the kind of momentum to do what the STEELERS want to do. They run strange plays in critical moments so often that it defies logic to people who dont even know the game. 3. The defense is overrated and right now, decimated w/injuries. Its incapable of getting stops in critical situations until the game is essentially out of hand and the other team is satisfied punting back to a team they know cant move the ball. 4. The team does not take inferior teams seriously. This has been a hallmark of Tomlins teams for years. The hardest part of coaching/motivating is getting people to buy in and do what needs to be done when everyone around U expects U to do so. Its easy to get people to buy into us vs the world, buying into or creating an environment that results in beating teams your supposed to is harder. Tomlin sux at that. The common component here is TOMLIN. All good thing come to an end and unfortunately for Tomlin, he is at the door of that in PIT. 100% of their problems start w/him.

@bane1240 8 месяцев назад
@@TheGhostofTomMetzger cant argue with most of that. However Tomlin drafted Woodley, Timmons and made Harrison the starter. Thise were his moves, not cowhers and he inherited an 8-8 team and won the SB in his second season bcuz of his moves and Ben obviously. Made it back to another 2 yrs later and lost also bcuz of Ben and Rashad Mendenhall. From there, the team has been in steady decline (especially on D) and Ben was clearly the best player on the team for several years.

Every year he gets the "no coach does more with less" treatment but at some point don't you start questioning why is he always working with less? Pittsburgh is pretty good at drafting, they're just not developing their players and that's on him. He won his superbowl with Cowhers team and hasn't had playoff success in over a decade now.

Mike Tomlin can be a great coach and his time in Pittsburgh could also be up. The Eagles once moved on from Reid. The Patriots will eventually move off Belichick. Any coach who stays in one spot too long eventually needs a change.

@@christophergzimbelman9977 I'm hearing the same thing from the same people about Pete Carroll. And Belichick. And Tomlin. And aside from being the three longest-tenured HC's in the NFL, they have one other thing in common -- they're all defensive-oriented coaches. Every one of them was born, bred, and corn-fed with the mantra, "Offense scores points, but it's DEfense that wins games." Of the three, the only one losing credibility by that measure is Carroll. It's not BB or Tomlin. The team is in disarray right now. Fans called for Matt Canada's head, and they got it. Now they think suddenly things are gonna change for the better when they fired their OC mid-season? Lemme tell ya, aside from Pickett getting injured, after watching that game last night it is as plain to me as the nose on your face that the skill players on offense _don't want to run their offense._ They have disinterest painted all over their faces and in their actions on the field. No hustle. No fire. This isn't your daddy's NFL. Today's young players don't wanna block, they don't wanna do the grunt work, they want the ball and will do the minimum amount of effort on any play that doesn't directly involve them and their star potential. And ironically these teams' fans are rewarding that level of play by calling for the jobs of the last handful of head coaches who coached teams back when the NFL was the real NFL -- when players would run through walls for their coaches. All they want are G.O.A.T. QB's and offensive gurus running the team, with flashy receivers and no RBs. Between NIL, sports gambling, and fans who weren't even born when most of these coaches got their start in the NFL, the league has gotten not only soft but QB-centric and individualistic. No more "You win as a team, you lose as a team." Sickening to watch.

When it comes to Mike Tomlin I think we need to separate the man from the Head Coach. By all accounts here locally in the Burgh and nationally from players, former players, and general sports personalities who know him, Mike Tomlin the person is a leader of men and a stand-up guy. Someone you'd want your son or daughter to grow up to be. Former players laud him and players from other teams say they wish they would have played for him. That's the type of person Mike Tomlin is and when I hear people like Rich and the slew of others who talk about Coach Tomlin, what I come away with is that they cannot separate the man from the Coach. As a man, Mike Tomlin has my utmost respect. But the results for Coach Tomlin leave a lot be desired. He had early success. In his first 4 years he took the Steelers to two SuperBowls, winning one and losing one. Since that SB loss in 2010, 13 years ago, the Steelers have won exactly 3 playoff games with 2 of those wins coming in the same post season. If you were an owner and someone gave you an option to hire a coach and they told you over a 13 year window he's only going to get you 3 playoff wins would you sign up for that? Would his regular season success even factor into your decision if you knew you'd only get 3 playoff wins? Think about the offensive talent this team has had specifically with Ben, AB, and Le'Veon Bell and let 3 playoff wins in 13 years sink in. And also throw in the fact that after year 13 you're going to be in a rebuild mode because you went all in on an offensive scheme that was not built for the NFL game and a coordinator who couldn't develop your young QB or your overall offense. Mike Tomlin the man should be applauded, Mike Tomlin the coach needs to be replaced.

We have been patient despite his failure to plan for life after Ben and while Pickett tries to develop. Is the fact that we're left to watch Tribusky and Rudolph entirely on Tomlin? No more than the offense was entirely Canada's fault. The "player's coach" has lost the locker room. @josejh-eb8st Minkah quite literally said in a recent interview that he believes the problem is that many players on the team have not bought in. And also that they show up "expecting to be great just cause they're wearing the black and gold, instead of working for it." That's culture. That's leadership. That is just as much if not more of an indictment on coaching as it is on those players. I feel the same way about Harbaugh as some Steelers fans feel about Tomlin. They're both good men, culture changing coaches that bring class and steadiness to a franchise. They're both also stale, riding on long ago SBs and success getting carried by talent and ownership that don't sack coaches.

There’s a difference. The Ravens have a better front office. Harbaugh was a lame duck prior to the team drafting Lamar. Lamar saved his job. To Harbaughs credit he’s adjusted well. If not for back to back seasons of Lamar getting injured, The Ravens and Harbaugh would have at least 2 more winning seasons. He parted ways with Wink and Roman and hired replacements, McDonald and Monken. I don’t want to hear the crap about sticking with Roman too long… again if not for the back to back seasons with injuries, (can’t attribute that to Harbaugh) You couldn’t argue with Roman’s approach because they were getting results. Yes Lamar out grew the system, but was it Harbaughs fault for the poor WR rooms until this season? That would go on EDC….as “good men” strong leaders have the ability to adapt, while also maintaining a brand, a culture. Many Ravens fans feel the same way… and I don’t get it. The grass is always greener… Harbaugh fired Cam Cameron in that Super Bowl year, he was disappointed with Winks defense, and Lamar’s lack of growth and let both his coordinators walk in successive seasons. I can understand the criticism of Harbaugh for his in game gaffes. But he’s so much more. Regardless of subjective opinions about Harbaugh his successes far exceed his gaffes. I will say this, if the Ravens don’t compete for Super Bowls through Lamar’s new contract, I’m sure he’ll retire or his contract won’t be renewed. Like a said in the beginning, He was a lame duck coach, in 2018. It was his end. Lamar saved him, he embraced it, and “earned” his new lease. This current tenure of Harbaugh isn’t based on that Super Bowl. It is due to him “trusting” Lamar Jackson. Let’s see how it turns out these next few seasons before comparing Harbaugh and the Ravens organization to the Steelers. Unfortunately for Steelers fans, their organization has yet to move into the modern era of football. The need an organizational reboot. The Ravens have rebounded after missing the playoffs 3 of 5 years and had Harbaugh on his way out. They have raised the standard. Ravens organization > Steelers organization (Not historically, but currently) they have been mid for almost a decade now.
@askmiller

At least with Harbaugh you can point to concrete examples of bad in game decisions that hurt the team. If you were to measure the pwin impact of the outcomes of the in game decisions Harbaugh makes, it's pretty bad. Can we say the same with Tomlin? Unpopular opinion, but Tomlin’s biggest mistake was his choice in offensive coordinator, and in reality Matt Canada and Teryl Austin were some of his first actual opportunities to choose his own coordinators. He made a mistake with Canada, but that’s still a mistake that the former GM and Owner share blame in as well. Things outside of a head coaches ability to prevent/change in the middle of a season? - offensive scheme - execution (you can motivate, but a coach isn’t on the field) - injuries to key personnel (QB, S, WR1, TE1, EDGE, all three of your starting Middle LBs) - injuries to depth personnel (remember Cory Trice and McFarland in the pre-season?) - young QB speed of developing consistency and decision making - accurate and equal officiating - strength of defensive schedule I understand that Tomlin ultimately is accountable for a lack of playoff success in recent years in a results oriented business. However, context matters and choosing to ignore it to satisfy your need to take your anger out on someone is immature. I hate watching the team lose like this as much as anyone, but I go live my life after the game is over and come back to cheer our team on the following week.
@z0mb1e564

One of the challenges great coaches face is that they elavate players, then those players get paid more than their talent is worth because the coach can make the most of it. That's why I think when you see a high level coach move on, their old teams collapse quickly and go into a severe rebuild. Meanwhile, that coach moves on to a new team and starts to excel again. It can be true that the Steelers would end up a better team after a couple years cleaning house if they get rid of Tomlin and that Tomlin is one of the best coaches in the sport.

Part of being a good coach is that you keep the locker room stable. Tomlin lost the locker room a long time ago and has allowed a lot of things to go on that good coaches don't. He inherited a good team from Bill, he's had great players and has yet to capitalize. He had arguably one of the best NFL receivers in the last two decades, one of the better running backs, and still two time Super Bowl champion quarterback, and still couldn't do it. - The steelers haven't won a playoff game in 7 years. - As per Tomlin, "the standard is the standard". Do you think no playoff win for 7 years is the standard for the steelers, Rich? And if not - don't you think Tomlin should be measured against "the standard" he himself set up? ... and this coming from a Ravens fan.

Look the facts of the matter are Tomlin choked when he had the most talented roster from 2013-2018. He made 1 AFC title game with a top 5 QB,RB, and WR. He hasn’t won a playoff game in 5 years and has had terrible hires at OC and DC. It’s becoming more evident Cowhers staff guided him to that one title 15 years ago. The media has just been saving him by touting “he doesn’t have a losing season though!” But they bashed McCarthy for years for not winning with Rodgers. It’s complete hypocrisy. Saying some incompetent owner would hire him immediately also doesn’t help your case there Rich.

That being said, this time period that we are now in reminds me an awful lot of the feeling I had when Chuck Noll was about to step down...things were looking fine for a team that just lost a HOF QB a few minutes ago, but theese last two games are more than a little hard to take. One thing is for sure, NE owns us or at least Belichick does....

One has to question how much the "fans" who put the blame on Tomlin understand about football. They obviously do not realize how devastating it is to lose one mike linebacker after another during a season, especially for a team, which has to rely on its defense. The Steelers have to hire inside linebackers out of retirement, and Tomlin doesn't look for excuses. So these "fans" don't get what a catastrophe the injury situation on defense has been this year.

@@2kolbe010 Well that's true for the offense. I follow the 49ers just as much as the Steelers, and when I compare the offensive plays, I want to cry everytime I see the Steelers. I believe that with Pittsburgh's personal, an OC with half the fantasy of Shanahan could make Pickett look like a top 15 NFL QB and Pickens an OPOY candidate. How one can draft Washington and not make him a target on at least half the plays in the red zone, is beyond me. And that's just one example. But I really don't believe that Tomlin forbids his offensive coaching staff to be creative. I he does, then he really needs to go.

Mike Tomlin is the most overrated coach in all sports..He has a playoff win in only 4 out of the 18 seasons in Pittsburgh. ZERO in the last 6 and only 3 in the last 13 seasons..There is absolutely nothing great about his coaching..Mediocre at best and that's giving him credit..He was gifted a talented roster with probowl and hall of fame players from the start.

I've become a Steeler fan over the last 5 years. I was formally a Bear fan. It was trash coaches and trash QBs for decades. Tomlin is better than any coach the Bears have had since Halas. With that said, Tomlin shouldn't be given an endless rope of patience. I think he should get this year and next year to right the ship. His contract ends next year so he should get that much. If he cannot solve the OC problem, he needs to be let go. I also think Steeler fans need to be careful. Every coach won't be Tomlin and Belichick or Reid. You can find the Steelers hiring terrible coaches and QBs quickly if they aren't careful. The Steelers have been super fortunate, but don't think Tomlin is the worst. The Jets coaches or the Bears coaches are far worse.

Here's what Owner Art Rooney II said in Jan 2023 per Steeler Depot : “I think the number one thing I look at in terms of the job a coach does is does the team get better over the course of the season. And we clearly did that,” Rooney said. “I don’t really evaluate Mike on anything other than I’m glad he’s our coach. Hopefully, he’ll be our coach into the future. "I think he gives us a chance to win year in and year out. Put us in a position that we have a chance to compete for a championship.” So AR II I hope you're of a different mindset after the last 5 days. And about Tomlin's contract extension?

Our defense is not top tier. Take out Watt and our defense is average at best. Watt makes up for our coaching and scheme failure's and bails us out, just like Ben bailed us out in the fourth quarter for all those years. Exceptional talent has bailed out this mediocre coaching staff for well over a decade now, but every season of this bad coaching has eroded that foundation and now the house is crumbling. Tomlin has to go, and the sooner the better.
