I love the way this song sounds, I couldn't find the lyrics anywhere on RU-vid so I made this video. I also wondered what it meant so I found a translation - I did not translate it myself!
This video is intended for enjoyment purposes and not in any way intended to infringe on any copyright. The song is by Steeleye Span.

I've heard many versions of this but nobody beats this out like Maddie and Steeleye Span. Magnificently pure voice.

Saw and heard Steeleye Span perform this when they were the opening act for Jethro Tull in Albuquerque, New Mexico around 1972 and I was spellbound and have never forgotten its beautiful and powerful sound. To see all the words now is testament to the magical power over that auditorium all those years ago!

I love the way they recorded this -- first miked from far away; then closer and closer; then receding. Sounding exactly as would carolers approaching, passing, moving on. So unique, and so perfect for the song. I'm glad you chose this version to use.

I sang this for a Christmas choir a few years ago I’ve memorised it because I’ve sang it so much, practiced nearly every school day and at home, also in the cathedral three times beforehand 😂 it’s stuck in my head but I really like it tbh

The first time I heard this was on WHFS radio driving around the Washington DC beltway. I was just stunned. It was 1973, I assume, as WHFS was "underground" or cutting edge, finding the popular but little known acts of the day, and getting it out there first. I became a lifelong SS fan before the song was over.

What a fantastic piece! I heard and knew it years ago, it was part of our Latin class learning for Christmas at school. Pls dont worry about exact translation, your English is so much better than my Italian - and the spirit of the song is there! 5* and a Fav for me now! Many thanks for the work you put into this and for sharing it with us.

I used to listen to it with my best friend on a christmas cd, and make up spooky medieval games! Haha. I used to think the last line of the chorus said 'oh virgin make our day tay'. Wow, i've finally found it :D

It is Maria Virgine with an e at the end because the preposition ex requires the use of the ablative form which for the word virgin requires an e at the end.

The lyric is "virgine" (ablative case which follows the preposition "ex"), not "virginae" which is no part of the noun "virgo, virginis". "Virgine" is correctly pronounced as if the "e" at the end is an "a" so it's sung o.k just spelt wrongly here.

A great song, but the transcription is appalling! Wikipedia has it right: Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus Ex Maria virgine, gaudete! Tempus adest gratiæ Hoc quod optabamus, Carmina lætitiæ Devote reddamus. Deus homo factus est Natura mirante, Mundus renovatus est A Christo regnante. Ezechielis porta Clausa pertransitur, Unde lux est orta Salus invenitur. . Ergo nostra concio Psallat iam in lustro; Benedicat Domino: Salus Regi nostro.
@seancoleman5021
@seancoleman5021 7 лет назад
Yes this makes more sense. I bought the single when it came out and I was studying for my Latin O level at the time. I was puzzled by 'naturam erante' and then a few other things. By the way, should concio be contio? I suppose concio is a mediaeval spelling.

Thank you for this, it was an excellent idea. But I think you will find it is Natura mirante (Nature stands in awe) , not Naturam erante Making a mistake of nature).
