Today we're out on the snowy shorelines targeting Steelhead, bottom bouncing with an artificial egg and yarn fly. I'm in the Lower Niagara River with Lewiston New York in front of me, Queenston Ontario behind me, and the mighty Niagara River between.

They make weights called walking weights for bottom bouncing. They were designed specifically for bottom bouncing the Maumee River for walleye. No walleye in California, but I love those weights. I only lose them when the bait gets snagged. Bottom bouncing finesse worms drives brown trout nuts.

I watched two videos of you bottom bouncing with the 3 way. This video has your sinker far away from the 3 way , the other video shows you fishing the sinker close to the 3 way. Do conditions call for that adjustment? Thanks
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 2 года назад
I use a short lead to the sinker (this is the traditional method) when there are less obstructions and less chance to snag up - if there are a lot of snags, I uses the other method, with the hook above the sinker, so there is only 1 chance of snagging, instead of 2 :)

Ivo this looks like an ideal fishing spot. Which way I can get from Toronto to the same spot, where to park the car? When we are already in this spot, can we catch Rainbow trout on this spot? Since my favorite fish is Rainbow trout, where in your opinion is the best spot on Niagara River to catch Rainbow trout from the shore, it can be Brown trout? And one more question , which season is the best to catch Rainbow trout on Niagara River. I' d like to start fishing in Canada, I thank you in advance for taking time to answer all my question. God bless you.

The rainbow fishing is great November and all winter into April...November and March/April are my favorite months. Easy access is at Port Dalhousie - just park and fish close to the dam. OR, you can go to the Queenston boat ramp, park and fish there - or, you can go to the whirlpool...there is parking across from the whirlpool gold]=f coarse, but its a hike to get down to the spot. You can also fish for rainbows in Fort Erie, anywhere from the train bridge to the peace bridge - here is a winter trout episode from fort erie you may enjoy - you will see the train bridge in the background :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hbGJcTbEBqw.html

Hey Ivo. I live in southern Indiana and have some PTO time. My father and I want to try Trout fishing for the first time. We were thinking about either Asheville, NC or the Niagara Falls. I want to use your techniques but really don't know where and when to go. We were thinking of driving and staying this Thurs-Mon. Where do you go on the Niagara River?
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 6 лет назад
Hi Eli - if you are up for a hike, just go to the whirlpool - great area, lots of room and good fishing :) You can park in the small parking lot on the Niagara Parkway, between Whirlpool road and the whirlpool golf course - good luck :)

Instead of tying on a leader above the swivel, do you ever tie the braid directly to the swivel, and then use fluro to hook, and to weight, or do you always tie a fluro/mono leader above the swivel?
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 6 лет назад
I avoid tying braid to the swivel as I prefer fluoro/mono, only in order to have less visibility in the water :)

I was recently on vacation in a area where they run bait with a bullet sinker and literally just let it rest on the bottom, for hours maybe. Due to lack of terminal tackle I decided to run a straight up dropshot rig using roe, I wanted my bait suspended being cold water, I was into a few before the hour was up. I understand your 3 way method allows the fish to take the bait without feeling the weight, but have ever used a dropshot rig to Target trout with any effectiveness. Thanks.
@thundermistlures

typically have not drop shot for trout, but it would be another good option :)

Ivo why don’t you tie yarn flies instead of snelling them like in the video? Is there a strategic advantage with this or just easier to change sizes of yarns?

Super video. Thanks for the rig setup. How’s the access to get down to the water? I have a bad leg that makes walking a little more challenging.
@thundermistlures

Hey ivo wonder if I could ask some advice. From Peterborough, I notice that you live in the niagara region I think? I'm looking to possibly make a trip out there via go train this summer and hopefully catch my first salmon or trout (steelhead, rainbow or brown). I find I have a lot of success at the dams in Peterborough for catching a variety of species. Are there dams in the niagara region that are good for fishing. Where would I go in that region to get a nice salmon or steelhead?
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 6 лет назад
the easiest place with a dam is at Port Delhousie - the bite starts in Sept and then fantastic fishing there all of October :)

Nice video and fish! Can you eat Steelheads? whats the difference between a steelhead and a trout?
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 6 лет назад
Yes - steelhead are excellent eating :) A rainbow is basically a land-locked trout...where as a true steelhead, migrate to the ocean...we do not have an ocean so our migrate to the lake, but we still refer to them as steelhead.

I also recommend people to use the shorter line to tie your hooks (coming from the swivel). Just my observation, let's see if I can explain: Sometimes when the fish is being extra careful (especially experienced fish that was hooked before and larger/older picky fish), and if you can picture your rig with the hook on the longer line, then your fish also have to pull your sinker's weight and makes an extra resistance, and those pickier fish may just spit out your bait right away, sensing something isn't right. You also wont' feel the more sensitive bites, because the weight dampens the fish bite on your main line. If your hook line is shorter, it will pull your main line before feels the resistance of the weight. This applies even more for bottom fishing, when your'e fishing for catfish or carp etc.
