ooo, I can dream of this. I’ve seen so many videos of flat top cooking, but never thought of doing it inside. Only had seen the BlackStones. I don’t have room or the budget for one of the BlackStones (yet). Great video and thanks for sharing your experience. Super explanatory and helpful! Trying to talk the husband into it! 👍🏼
Given that it's been two years since this video was posted, I wonder if it's still in use. I looked at one of these in a half-sized configuration, but sent it back quickly after it arrived. My first objection was that the surface was far more rough than I was hoping for. I was looking for something more approaching a smooth steel grill, like you'd see in a restaurant (especially a teppanyaki place). This was more like fine sandpaper, Also, he mentions this full-sized one at 30 lbs. Think of the hassle cleaning that. And while the open edge with the drip holes seem like a good idea, I think in practical use indoors they would just become a mess. As an outdoor addition to an existing grill, this might be fine, but for finer cooking indoors, I'm not sure this is a very good option.
I disagree. Just bought one, the seasoning process they describe in good detail both on the instructions and in these videos works great for giving the smooth non-stick surface. Made hibachi style fried rice on it and it worked fantastic in all the avenues that you've listed concerns in
Yes, I will be purchasing this very soon! I've wanted this ability in my own kitchen for a long time (restaurant cooking space). This will make hosting a breeze! Thanks for the video and sharing. Very knowledgeable and real!
It needs a raised edge at the front....I can see grease easily dripping off anywhere across the front....AND drain holes are at front....looks like when scraping towards drain, it's pretty easy to overshoot the holes and push grease off the edge.
I thought the same until I used it. It's great to not have to work over a lip while you're cooking though! Having your stovetop level or with a slight tilt toward the back is key. Thanks for watching!
@@rirons0625 that was fast. Ty....another question...my wife is only about 5'1"....that thing weighs about 30lbs....we've a glass top cook top also with a center downdraft. 1. I doubt if my wife would ever use this due to its size and weight, so I would always be the "Go to" here...does anyone else see this as a problem for the (smaller or older) cook? 2. How tall are the standoffs...would need to clear my downdraft and control knobs....if it would clear. 3. When sitting it over the stovetop, that 30lb piece of steel seems pretty risky for anyone to correctly handle and avoid dropping thru the glass? Not trying to rain on the parade...just asking thinking I've missed something...ty
@@earnieb5318 No problem at all, I appreciate your questions! It is heavy for sure, and it could be a tussle for some to get onto a stovetop. That needs to be a consideration for sure. My stovetop is glass also, but I do not have a center downdraft like you do. I would have to get back to you on the height of the spacers as I am not home at the moment, but I do know that they are in the 1/2"-3/4" range.
Design flaw? Grease holes should be at the top because there is a lip to keep stuff from spilling onto stove unlike at the bottom where it will spill over.
Now that it's been awhile, how are you finding it? I am considering getting one but fear it won't get hot enough for searing and making smashburgers. Need to reach at least 450 degrees.
I love my griddle! It will easily get hot enough. Most of the time my burners are at a medium setting or slightly below. You will certainly have no trouble getting to 450. Thanks for watching!
Your drip tray was tiny. When cooking large amounts of bacon, what do you do if your tray fills upmid cook? How easy is it to get to? Do you have to lift the griddle?
The drip pan holds 8oz, and with a pound of bacon and the burgers in the video I did not have any issue. This is the only drip tray available for the glass stovetop model. If you have a gas or electric stovetop, the drip tray is rectangular, and there is a taller version which doubles what it will hold to 16oz. It will depend on your stovetop design how easy it is to get at to drain it while cooking. Thanks for watching!
How about the ventilation? Is the standard inside ventilation enough? What about the spatter if you aren't using a lid will it get all over the counters or do you need to figure that out trial and error?
The biggest thing is to control your temperature and use oils that have a higher burn point to keep smoking at a minimum. Temperature control will also help with spatter but inevitably you will have some. Thanks for watching!
I debated for a year, and after finally making the decision to buy one I absolutely love it! To avoid smoke, you want to not overheat the griddle and use an oil with a higher smoke point. Steelmade has a great article on this here: steelmadeusa.com/pages/learn?aff=179. Thanks for watching!
Steelmade's method of seasoning the griddle is directly on your stovetop. You will find their seasoning process here: steelmadeusa.com/pages/seasoning?aff=179 Certainly if your oven is large enough to fit the griddle that could also be a great way to season it, just as if you were doing a cast iron pan. I did mine on the stovetop and it has performed excellent! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the review. I love hibachi food, so I want one, but also I like cookin my food at work bc they gave one of these. Definitely ordering one.
Trying to set mine up but all i'm getting is a crap top of smoke. Set it to 350° F by the time it reaches 260° my kitchen is cloudy as all hell and oil evaporates as soon as i put it on there (with huge plumes of smoke). add a burger and it burns within a few seconds still frozen.
Sorry to hear that, here's a link to some Steelmade tips that will be helpful. steelmadeusa.com/pages/learn?aff=179 The biggest things are to control the heat and use oils that have higher burning points. Don't give up, you'll love it when you get it figured out!
@@rirons0625 Thank you! since the covid lock down all of our fast food places have gone out of business and i'm trying to recreate the food (just normal roadside burgers) and cannot find help anywhere lol.
Unfortunately the promo available when this video was made ended a while ago. I paid full price for mine too and have zero regrets. I still love my griddle and I'm sure you will love yours too! Thanks for watching!
Did the grease tray have to be emptied during your video? If so, how difficult was it? Looked like some of the grease tried to run off the front. Seems like a pound of bacon would cause it to overflow. Very thorough video review!! Thanks
The tray didn't have to be emptied, and in fact I've never had an issue with the drip tray overflowing. They do have a deeper tray available if you were concerned but unfortunately not for the glass top. Getting to the tray to empty it while you are cooking would definitely be a challenge! Thanks for watching!
Steelmade is currently allowing you to get their Black Friday deal now and be in front of the holiday rush. The code BLKFRDY22 will save you 15%! Thanks for watching!
I got one for Christmas i like it. Do you have a problem with sliding if I put any pressure on it, it slides. Im afraid its gunna fall off the spacers.
I don't have too much issue with it sliding while cooking, but during clean up it will wander a bit if I am aggressively scraping. You shouldn't need much pressure while cooking, especially when it becomes seasoned well. Watch your temperature and make sure to use an oil with a higher burn point to reduce food sticking to the grill. Steelmade's website has a great reference to different oils and how much heat they can take. I hope that helps a little!
Now that you’ve had it for a year, anything you’d like to share about it? Still love it? Have any complaints? I’m looking to get one and would love to know. Thanks!
I am still a raving fan! I have zero complaints with the griddle. My only regret is with my glass top stove I am limited to the standard griddle due to the risk of breaking my stovetop. I'd love the heavier pro version which would allow the use of pots and pans on the griddle while it is in use. If you are someone who enjoys spending time in the kitchen, you will not regret the decision to pick one up for yourself! Thanks for watching!
@@rirons0625 Awesome! Quick follow up question: How easy is it to set up and take down? Is it as simple as set the spacers down and lay the griddle on top? Curious if anything moves around at all/might risk scratching my glass top.
@@evandh1989 It is that simple! Place the pucks and the drain pan, then set the griddle on top. I have never had an issue with scratching the top, but because the griddle is resting only on the 4 dime sized pucks it can shift on those when scraping the griddle to clean it. I recommend using a pot holder in one hand to keep the griddle in place while scraping it.
Hello I need to tranform my gas stove into just one top flat gas, intead of directly cooking on this, can i use this as regular stove? Like put my pots on top and cook?
You can! For that use you need the pro series, it is heavier duty for use with pots and pans. Here's a direct link to it: eelmadeusa.com/collections/pro-series/products/pro-series-steelmade-flat-top-grill-30-gas-or-electric-coil-range-stoves?variant=43043243098360&aff=179 Thanks for watching!
Yes, all of the burners do need to be turned on to heat the griddle evenly and prevent warping. If you feel you would not need as much space when using the griddle, there is a slim version which only covers half of your stovetop. You can see that here: steelmadeusa.com/products/steelmade-flat-top-slim-for-30-gas-or-electric-coil-range-stoves?aff=179 Thanks for watching!
Cleanup is easy! A cleaning video is on my list to do, but in the meantime Steelmade has a good tutorial here: steelmadeusa.com/pages/cleaning?aff=179 Thanks for watching!
It would all depend on the design of your stovetop. Mine has a lip on the front that makes it more difficult to remove while cooking. I have yet to cook anything that has produced more than the drip tray can handle although I have been close. However, depending on your stovetop Steelmade does make a higher capacity drip tray that is available. Thanks for watching!
An improvement on this would be to have the drain holes at the back with a half inch edge at the front due to the fact that a lot of gas ranges (or other types) have an electronic motherboard control pad right at the front of the burners. Otherwise, I am interested in this.
It does not take long to get to temperature at all. During this video I had that burner set low at 3.0/10. Now that I have used the griddle for several months I have figured out what my burner settings need to be to achieve a particular temperature range on the griddle. I do like to allow a good 10 minutes for it to heat up thoroughly and be ready to cook on. Thanks for watching!
@@Mann.withtheplann I prefer a low to medium heat for most cooking on the Steelmade. I have found I get better results allowing the griddle to heat somewhat slower than cranking the heat up high. Thanks for watching!
I really think a front lip would be better. My Blackstone has a lip on all 4 sides and I’ve never found it to be an issue. Without the lip you have to be super careful when scraping the grease into the drain holes that you don’t scrape it too far and overshoot. Also I would set all my burners on max to get it as hot as possible, even the middle areas, and then season with avocado oil. Should help get a bit more even color rather than those concentrated areas. Shoot for 500+ deg if possible.
Just got mine last week. Working on my griddle skills. Lol. Do you leave your griddle on stove all the time? My only complaint is when I need to cook in a pot it needs removed
Mine is on my stovetop 90% of the time. They do make a "pro" version that can be left on the stove and pots can be used directly on it, not for glass tops though. Thanks for watching!
I got one as well. Love it. I bought the cover board that goes on top and use it as extra counter space. If I need to use the stove top they said you can put at least a 1qrt pain on top of the griddle with the regular griddle. Also I just purchase a hot plate from amazon or walmart if you need to use pots and pan. I have a instapot as well so sometimes I dont even use the stove much.
This is pretty cool idea! much better than the electric griddles. I can see this being very useful for homes with no yard space, townhomes & condos. I bet this works best with gas stove tops. I bet this can be tricky though. I see several challenges.. the splatter must be a bitch. All over the counters, floors and backsplash area. Sure, regulating the temp so avoid,, but sometimes u need that bad boy piping hot for nice sears.. Second cleaning.. I know typically a wipe down is enough, but occasionally you need a Scrub down. If your in a condo, where do you do it? In the shower?? Must cook carefully, you can cause lots of smoke with certain foods, smoke alarm can get annoying. Lol. Also, make sure on whatever your going to make. You are out of a stove while using this. No stove top to cook something in a stickpot for example. If your cooking eggs, bacon and pancakes its great, but if you want to make grits.. better make them beforehand Once you use this, it'll stay hot for a while so removing to cook on stove is omitted and lastly storage... Wow, I sound like a stuck uo pain in the ass lol. Not my intention. I really like this idea. Just my 2 cents for those thinking of getting
All good thoughts. It is pretty awesome. Gas or electric, it works great! Clean up is all done while it is hot and still on your stovetop, I'll post a clean up video soon. Thanks for watching!
Your assessment is spot on. The whole point of cooking on a griddle outside is to not worry about the mess (splatter and smoke). I'm struggling between a flat top or a three-burner stove with cast iron skillets or cast iron griddle plate. Will be mostly making meat, not so much breakfast stuff.
we used ours for the first time tonight and overflowed the oil trap when making the bacon. Is there an easy way to drain out the trap after the griddle is hot? Definitely trial and error but so fun and a great product!
Unfortunately there is not a good way to empty the drain pan when the griddle is hot. Depending on your stovetop, Steelmade does make a taller drain pain that will double the capacity if you have the room for it. Most times it is a non-issue. I'm glad you are enjoying your griddle, it is fun to use!
@@rirons0625 quickly grab dry towels thicker the better. Push grease back with your Turner and Drain grease into a larger dedicated grease pot or whatever you have. Just remember to use a dry towel, not wet.
@@2-girl-dad What a great idea! I just started using our new grill this morning and the drip pan doesn't quite fit - plus it is pretty small. I took their suggestion and made bacon and steaks tonight. There are aluminum pans that are rectangular and fairly shallow. I will be trying this. Can't believe I didn't think of it!! LOL
Sorry to be a troll, but all burners are not at the same temp. I would have adjusted large burners to be less compared to the smaller ones. It turning brown where the burners are is questionable to me
To get a more even heat you are absolutely correct! This was literally my first time using the griddle, and I have definitely zeroed things in now as far as burner temps go. The brown is actually what you want to see as that is the seasoning developing on the steel, the same as black on a cast iron skillet. Thanks for watching!
I just tried to call the company but their automated system does not allow me to get to speak with someone. I am in the market for a griddle. Do you know how to get someone live. If it's this difficult to buy a griddle I wonder how difficult it would be for warranty or any other services? Thanks for the video
Steelmade doesn't recommend using pots on top of their regular griddle, but I think a smaller pot would be ok. You would definately want it directly over a burner. They do sell a "pro" model that is thicker to allow the use of pots and pans on top of the griddle. Either way, if you have a glass top stove like I do the extra weight of a pot full of pasta may not be advised. I hope that helps and thanks for watching!
Cool idea. I know a Blackstone grill does not have a front ledge but I would want a ledge on the front of this inside one. Also, the grease tray doesn't look like it would hold much in grease drippings.
I do understand the worry about not having a front lip, but I have never had an issue with that. Also, depending on your stovetop Steelmade does have a larger drip pan available. Thanks for watching!

I understand that for sure! If you have enough clearance, they do have a taller drip tray available with more capacity. I'm fortunate enough to know someone who is a stainless steel fabricator who made a larger one suitable for my glass stovetop. Thanks for watching!
If you purchase the griddle for glass/ceramic stovetops the spacers come with the griddle. The spacers are available separately as an accessory also. The "DIME" 10% discount code still applies to most items! 👍
The initial seasoning will cause more smoke than usual, you will not get as much smoke as you continue to use it and the full seasoning develops. Every stovetop is a bit different, but for mine I find that my griddle is best with my burners set at around 3 (out of 10). I definitely would recommend a lower setting with a 10-15 minute warm up and slowly increasing the setting if needed. An infrared thermometer will really help you to zero in. I hope that helps!
How much did they pay you to make this or did you get the griddle for free? I just ordered one and am prepared to refuse delivery. Rude customer service, combative and dismissive with pertinent questions like (what kind of steel and how does it compare to others in it's class). Ordered over a week ago and just shipped today. Not worth it if there's that much trouble prior to shipping IMO.
Where can I purchase the spacers? I didn't see them in your links. Nevermind, I just found it in your 1st link and just ordered them. Just got it for Christmas and can't hardly wait to try it out! The link said DIME code for a discount was only good for one day but I tried it and it worked!
I am fortunate to have a pantry area to store mine. With the griddle only a couple of inches deep many people will store it in an area beside their refrigerator or other narrow available space. I do recommend the storage bag that I also provided a link for, with that you could store it almost anywhere and keep it protected. Truthfully, mine is on my stovetop waaaay more than it is off! Thanks for watching!
The griddle is 30 pounds, so it sits pretty solid. The only time it wants to shift much is while scraping it while cleaning and I do use a pot holder to keep it in place then. Thanks for watching!
I thought the same until I used it. It's great to not have to work over a lip while you're cooking though! Having your stovetop level or with a slight tilt toward the back is key. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! Unfortunately the DIME code has expired and I do not have any current discount codes available. It's always great to get something on sale, but this is a purchase you will not regret paying full price for...I did and I love it!
If your stove is leveled properly grease dripping off the front is not an issue. To be extra certain you could raise the front of your stove just a touch. Not too much though or you will have an issue with pooling at the back of the griddle. Thanks for watching!
That's a good question! I've never tried to fit mine in the oven as I have the storage sleeve that Steelmade makes for their flat tops. I keep mine in the pantry when not in use. You have me curious now though, I'll see if it fits in my oven and let you know!
@@thekooolest1 My 30" flat top won't fit in my stove. If that was how you would like to store yours, Steelmade does have smaller sizes that may fit depending on the dimensions of your stove and they do make custom sizes also. Follow the link in the video description and you can see all that are available. Thanks for watching!
You don't want to strip the brown off as that is the seasoning that continues to make your griddle non-stick much like the black on cast iron cookware. As you continue to use the griddle it will eventually all become the same darker shade. That's a good thing! 😊 Thanks for watching!
@@rirons0625 cool I got mine today and ur review is the best . Took a while to get it love it . Does leaving the bigger ceramic burners on 4 and the smaller ones on 5 sound like a setting or should it be lower ? Haven’t gotten a thermometer yet
That's pretty close to where mine are usually set, my smaller back burners are usually on 5 and my larger front burners around 3-3.5. Every stovetop is a little different though. Happy griddling!
No! Steelmade actually has built in a slight slope to the back of the griddle. I also adjusted my stove to sit a bit higher in the front to help prevent any potential dripping off of the front. Thanks for watching!
I store mine in my pantry when it is not on my stovetop. I just purchased a storage bag that should work perfectly for it also but haven't recieved it yet. I added the link to it in the description.
Leveling your stovetop is key, just a slight slope to the rear is best. Then being careful and deliberate when scraping things into the drip tray. Thanks for watching!

I really don't like the drainage and front part of this. There's no reason the front can't have a lip to keep the fat contained. Or, have a grease trough as wide as the griddle you can pop off, tilt and drain into a container. If keeping the drainage position as is, it would make more sense to replace the holes with a couple wide slats as it works better with the shape of the flipper and scraper and you'd likely capture 90% of the grease in the first slat. With the holes you appear to be missing a ton of grease. And, again, even with that setup there's still no reason not to have a lip on the front as big as the other 3.
