Drive west on sunset to the sea...
Practice evoking the laid-back mood of late-70s California with the first of these Steely Dan inspired jam tracks. Some tricky chords to play over here, but you can always just stick to a mixture of major & minor pentatonic if you want to take it easy. How hard you make it is up to you.

For those who may be curious: The Bmaj7 is straight out of B major (ionian). The Em6/9-Aadd9 section is a ii-V in D major, or more specifically E dorian and A mixolydian. The D/G functions as Gmaj7#11, so G lydian is appropriate. Likewise the E/A functions as Amaj7#11 so A lydian works. Since the G9 is an unresolved dominant, G lydian dominant (D melodic minor) is the correct scale. Over F#alt, there are a myriad things you can do, the most common being F# superlocrian (G melodic minor).

Absolutely love this. Wrote a little love song for my lady using this and play some BB King and Santana licks and she completely melts. Thanks!

This is so good. Veteran musician here and I have to say if this doesn’t teach this kind of guitar to anybody nothing will. Anybody can play chords to Green Day but this stuff has class and some substance. Just great 👍

you can use the B min pentatonic/blues scale(7th fret) over the whole thing and it sounds perfect. Mix in pieces of the other scales and you can really do some damage.

I had to log in to thank you. Steely Dan is one of my favorite bands, and soloing over their tracks has always been problematic for me. You've unlocked a world of possibilities for me! So far, I like hanging on the flat 7th as a nice transition. As for the track itself, I love the variety in the groove. AND THAT PURDIE SHUFFLE!!!!

Really enjoying these backing tracks, guys - they've got a dynamism and movement that's sorely lacking in most everything else on RU-vid. Great job.

The 'G9' is actually dominant 7th/+11th/9 - Lydian Dominant - Tritone sub for what would be the V7(C#7) of V (in this case the F# alt.).

I think the chord names are partly incorrect. These are probably correct: Bmaj7 / Bmaj7 Em7/6 / A7 D/G / E/A G7/9 / F# 7#9 You can try these scales: B ionian B ionian B aeolian B aeolian B aeolian B dorian B bluesscale F# alt

Just though I'd clear something up in case anyone got confused: The F#Alt is really a F# dom.7 sharp 9. The term used in the video is incorrect because it isn't an altered chord at all it's a dominant chord. Just in case in helps...
@JazzMac36251
@JazzMac36251 10 лет назад
"altered" means a dominant chord that has any combination of b9, #9, b5, or #5. dom7(#9) is a type of altered chord.
@sgmann09
@sgmann09 10 лет назад
JazzMac36251 I completely forgot about this video; however, you are correct, especially when referring to jazz theory. The chord I named is correct, but F#Alt is correct as well. I do find it is more helpful to others, mostly newer players, if the chord is specified as I did, but the video is still technically correct as you pointed out. Cheers, Ben

Hey, credit where credit is due! Well if you're looking for ideas... something along the lines of Toto y'know that rock with great harmony vibes and well because Lukather rocks. Or a George Benson style jazz ballad. Perhaps something D'Angelo inspired... Spanish Joint esque! Given your other work I'm sure anything along these lines would be great! Hope to see one soon...
@BlueHouseJamTracks
@BlueHouseJamTracks 9 лет назад
Actually, funny you should mention it. I had something in the works a while back that sounded like D'Angelo - Untitled, but I never finished it. Maybe I'll have to revisit it!

i agree with goynes42 with the exception that the last two chords to me sounds like a minor 2- 5 with the G9 as a tri tone sub for C#min7b5 i would use B harm minor for last two bars
@TheGodlessGuitarist
@TheGodlessGuitarist 9 лет назад
Interesting suggestion. Seems to work in practice. I quite like going to C major for the G9 and F# super loc for the F#alt. Not very imaginative use of theory but it works for me flavour wise. F# whole-tone works quite well too.

You can play major pentatonic over the first two Bmaj7s, then the rest will take minor pentatonic. Of course you can get way more complicated than that if you like...

I'm not sure I completely understand why but that is spot on advice and sounds great! Where else can you go with full scales/modes on this? Great backing track btw.

Oops! Try G major/Em. I was running between the G phrygian and the aeolian modes and it fits perfect.

This is cool! I hope you consider "Century's End" by Steely Dan. Although the lyics on that song are odd, the music on that tune is high on the cool factor.

It's great for rhodes-jamming. I love your backing track. Though I gotta get used to the quarter-stable (d#-c#-g#) on top of Bmaj7 in the horn-section. But I assume it's a part of your backing automation that can't be changed? But again - great for saturday afternoons with my Yamaha S70SX

I am confused (beginner). What key is this in? Is it switching keys?
@eroman4565
@eroman4565 10 лет назад
That's the whole idea - you have to play around the chord changes, which takes you in different modes, and going seamlessly from one mode to the next can be challenging. I try to be aware of a set of common tones, then change the variables as it changes modes.
