there are no technically poor SD tracks. every song had nothing but THE BEST studio musicians Donald and Walter could assemble.. this band is made up of all the people you didnt know you loved who made so many of the songs of the 60-70-80s and 90s sound so good on the studio albums of so many famous bands..
@@EpicFrozenMoment im not as impressed with him as everyone else is though im in no way saying his work is bad... big fan of Doobie Brothers too.. ive just never thought his singing was great or hard since i can nail it in any track i sing myself ( not even trying to claim im a pro singer.. but MM tracks are my "rest breaks" when i do my garage band stuff..)

Thank you for calling this song a “masterpiece”. This little black girl grew up listening to Steely Dan and appreciate them even more now that I’m an adult. Peg is definitely my favorite.
Steely Dan is not really a rabbit hole. More of a rabbit canyon if such a thing exists. I've seem them live and I agree that they are amazingly tight. One comparable tightness wise is Union Station of Alison Kraus fame. Both are awesome treats from master musicians in a concert venue. If you have such opportunity, don't miss either.
The incredible bass line is supplied by bassist extraordinaire, Chuck Rainey. He played bass on the Sanford and Son theme song too. He's almost too good.
Chuck Rainey is magic. I mean, he was their go-to until the last album. Becker barely picked up the bass other than to write the basic parts that Chuck then got to elevate.
The album Aja was one that changed the shape of music. The musicians who played were all famous. You need to listen to the entire album over and over again. Investigate who's playing bass, drums, guitar. You can watch the documentary about Steely Dan. It will be very informative for your inquisitive mind!!

Steely Dan is a great American rock band founded in 1971. They had a lot of great hits such as "Do It Again", "Dirty Work", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Hey Nineteen", "Josie", "Aja", "Kid Charlemagne", "Reelin' In The Years", "Deacon Blues", "FM", "Show Biz Kids", "My Old School", "Babylon Sisters" etc."
Steely Dan were more like an aesthetic than a band. Fagen and Becker assembled the musicians they wanted specifically to get the sound they wanted. Their records contain the who's who of studio musicians. Not to mention they are gifted song writers and musicians themselves.
They used 40 session musicians for this album, being the perfectionists they are, and the entire album is fire! You were close, it was 1977! Thanks for this!! Great reaction to an awesome song! Hope everyone's holiday season is filled with all of your favorite things!
Finally! Steely Dan! 2 musical genius eggheads combine their talents and change music forever! To me, Peg is their most commercial sounding creation. Every album is a classic adventure into the intoxicating world of Donald and Walter. Catchy tune, but just scratches the surface of the most versatile band who refuses to be put into stereotypical categories of music. Steely Dan is in a category of their own. Thanks Polo! 👕♥️
Steely Dan fuses Rock and Jazz like no other Rock Band. They use dozens of insanely good studio musicians in every album. Loved them. Since Pretzel Logic came out!!!
Polo, Steely Dan is one of, if not the "tightest groups" ever. Their music is distinctive and musically complex - like no other, even today - 50 years later. They are one of my favorites of all time!
The bass line (played by Chuck Rainey) ) is mind-blowing. And the use of space in both the music and the mixing/mastering is amazing. Thanks for the upload.
Top to bottom, this is arguably the greatest album ever. Aja is a masterpiece, as is the title track, which I'd definitely recommend a react to in order to get a great sense of their phenomenal musicianship!
Steely Dan was played on multiple radio genres. Jazz, R&B, Rock, Pop. In 1989, De La Soul sampled this for their song "Eye Know".. This group is special
I think they have a Funk element that doesn't get acknowledged enough. They get lumped into some R&B but the more people listen to the beat, especially the bass, you can hear the Funk
Steely Dan is an endlessly rewarding musical experience. With rare exceptions, I've listened to Steely Dan several times a week since I first heard Rikki Don't Lose That Number in the 1970s. Their catalog and creativity are astounding. You'll love discovering this "band". Pick any song recommendation and I'm pretty sure you'll be impressed.

The Dan changed musicians on every album. Perfectionists. They were highly sampled- like their Black Cow- sampled for “ Uptown- Deja Vu “ by Peter Guns and Lord Tariq.
Oh wow, where do I start Lol? Just hearing this song December of 2023??? I grew up in the 70's and 80's and this, and dozens of other Steely Dan songs played on the radio constantly! So often, that they sometimes got a little old....but I truly love, love Steely Dan. I've been obsessed with them (again) recently! Each musician on the records an accomplished session musician in their own right, layering, weaving beautiful notes upon layers....you said it...masterpiece (s)!! It's timeless
Actually... it was "elephant" bell bottoms, black Chuck Taylors, big hair, a tube top and roach-clip earrings. Kid Charlemagne next!!! (their early song has a lovely easter egg you'll like)
I think what most younger folks don’t realize is just how extensive the entire catalog of Classic Rock is. To really put it in perspective, you have to understand that from around 1968 to somewhere around the mid 80s, new music at or very near this quality and caliber was dropping 2 or 3 times a week, EVERY SINGLE WEEK. The list of artists and bands who have multiple albums with multiple hits would fill a very thick volume. To say that we were spoiled is a colossal understatement. And when you compare what came after that era, maybe you can understand why so many of us just turned off the radio. No one actually plays an instrument any more and everything is digital and/or vulgar. There’s no musicianship and no genuine artistry. I’m 65 years old now and my only real consolation is that young people, like you, are discovering all this great music and I get to relive a little of the magic with you. Thank you 🙏 You are why Rock N Roll will never die. ❤
I had the pleasure of seeing Steely Dan at Red Rocks, Michael McDonald opened, then joined SD for part of the show. It was absolutely astounding. One of the best shows I have ever seen. This is coming from someone who grew up in the 60's, 70's and 80's listening to the best, having the opportunity to see some of the best bands ever.
"Groove" pretty much describes the music of the '80s. It was all about the groove and we were all chilling and enjoying the groove together. It was a great time to be alive!
Rainey had to sneak in the slapping. Fagen and Becker said that they didn't want it. So Rainey, being the virtuoso that he is, hid behind a riser during takes. So glad he did! The Bass, as Polo points out, makes the tune. The groove is huge!
I'm a keybaord player and Chuck Rainey's bass line was one of the first things I ever learned off a recording. I didn't realize at the time that I was listening to one of the most legendary bass tracks ever recorded.
I put a GOOD stereo in my truck and caught my dad jamming this song way loud. I just joined in the listen. You made me think about that moment almost 50 years later, thx for the memory

I grew up listening to Steely Dan a lot and found that they don’t have any bad music. I’m also a bass player and you’re right this is a great bass part. I remember playing for a group a few years ago and having to learn this bass part and enjoying it.
The quote that took me back to Steely Dan was from Jimmy Page who said his favorite guitar song was from Reelin in the years by Dan. He rated it a 12/10. That’s a major compliment from the master from Zep. I was thinking of recommending Do it again or FM as an intro for you. You were close on the decade though as their biggest albums were from 1972 to 1980. They were such a polished studio band that took time and love to craft nearly perfect music. I would say they were nearly totally unique as they seldom toured. They would be damn sure poor today with streaming. I would really love hearing a few more when you get to them. 🖖🏼

If you watch "The Making of Aja" there is a segment where the people who played and sang on the track describe the process they went through to get the end result, The bass player has a particularly funny and interesting story to tell.
Gotta love the Dan, with Fagan and Becker doing their magic to get all the best session players for each track. Such an iconic sound and groundbreaking for the time introducing actual music to "pop" music that combines so many genres.
Bellbottoms were out of fashion by the time this song was released (1977). My Steely Dan Favorites: "Home at Last," "Pretzel Logic," "Charlie Freak," "Third World Man," "Jack of Speed," and "The Things I Miss the Most." These weren't big hits, but hidden gems.
One of my fave De La Soul tracks - "Eye Know" - samples this song to great effect. Also, you can hear Michael McDonald (Doobie Brothers) in the chorus.

Welcome to your Steely Dan journey. It's very groovy in here :) For many of their records, Steely Dan is just 2 songwriters (one on Keys/Vox and one on Guitar usually) and a rotating cast of the BEST session musicians / jazz heads/ etc that they would bring in to suit each track.
Some chamnels listen to each song on Steely Dan's album called Aja, and then they watch the popular documentary about making the album, and that can be divided into parts and the parts put up on your channel. The song Aja (pronounced like "Asia") is my favorite Steely Dan song. I named a dog Aja. The song is famous for a sax part played by a famous jazz sax player, and everyone loves the drumming. A famous session drummer. You dont get a lot of Drumming and Sax duets in life, and you cant imagine what two of the best, can do when put together.
Dirty Work, My Old School, and Deacon Blues are some of my favorites. But you can't go wrong with any Steely Dan song. Studio perfection without autotune or melodyne.
Ahhh yes one of my absolute favorite songs of my entire 53 years! Good ear, that bass is nothing less than fire!! Thank you for bringing this old jam to the forefront it deserves to be recognized and appreciated forever and ever!
Was brought up with these legends, in the 70’s / 80’s the album Aja is a musical masterpiece, I thank my parents for introducing me to great music, so many awesome tunes to list, Deacon Blues, Hey Nineteen, Green Earrings, Kid Charlemagne, Aja, Black Cow, I could go on, enjoy the Steely Dan ride, you won’t be disappointed 😉👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼.
The whole track is so polished and Polo is digging the bass in particular which is totally understandable but the way the drummer and the bass keep punching the same key notes and transitions with exquisite timing is a beautiful thing.
Love all of Steely Dan's music. One of my all-time favorite bands, Crosby, Stills,Nash, and Young, and once I heard Crosby say, he listenes to Steely Dan. That was cool!!
